XXIII ICHST T09-01 Mathematics in the Contemporary Period (1800-) FROM A MEASURE THEORY TO A THEORY OF MEASURES Martinez Adame, Carmen UNAM, Mexico The idea of this talk is to describe how Carathéodory developed what can be rightfully named a theory of measures from the ideas set out initially in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries by Jordan, Borel and Lebesgue (among others) even though this was not the envisaged goal of these authors. The three French authors we have mentioned all developed a measure as an auxiliary tool in their research, it is quite clear that none of them intended to study the measure they had created on its own; their goal was to facilitate and improve either integration theory or complex variable theory. However, it was the manner in which Borel and Lebesgue presented their measures that would eventually lead to Carathéodory’s approach and it is our claim that it is at this moment that an object called a “measure” was introduced as such in mathematics. In other words, it was the axiomatic approach followed by Lebesgue (and Borel) that allowed Carathéodory’s “formal theory of measurability” and eventually led to measure theory (as a theory whose objects are measures) as known today. Frigyes Riesz was one of the founders of functional analysis; the famous Riesz-Fischer theorem is familiar to every mathematician. -

A Century of Mathematics in America, Peter Duren Et Ai., (Eds.), Vol
Garrett Birkhoff has had a lifelong connection with Harvard mathematics. He was an infant when his father, the famous mathematician G. D. Birkhoff, joined the Harvard faculty. He has had a long academic career at Harvard: A.B. in 1932, Society of Fellows in 1933-1936, and a faculty appointmentfrom 1936 until his retirement in 1981. His research has ranged widely through alge bra, lattice theory, hydrodynamics, differential equations, scientific computing, and history of mathematics. Among his many publications are books on lattice theory and hydrodynamics, and the pioneering textbook A Survey of Modern Algebra, written jointly with S. Mac Lane. He has served as president ofSIAM and is a member of the National Academy of Sciences. Mathematics at Harvard, 1836-1944 GARRETT BIRKHOFF O. OUTLINE As my contribution to the history of mathematics in America, I decided to write a connected account of mathematical activity at Harvard from 1836 (Harvard's bicentennial) to the present day. During that time, many mathe maticians at Harvard have tried to respond constructively to the challenges and opportunities confronting them in a rapidly changing world. This essay reviews what might be called the indigenous period, lasting through World War II, during which most members of the Harvard mathe matical faculty had also studied there. Indeed, as will be explained in §§ 1-3 below, mathematical activity at Harvard was dominated by Benjamin Peirce and his students in the first half of this period. Then, from 1890 until around 1920, while our country was becoming a great power economically, basic mathematical research of high quality, mostly in traditional areas of analysis and theoretical celestial mechanics, was carried on by several faculty members. -

Cryptocellus canga sp. nov. is described from specimens collected in several caves at Carajás National Forest, Pará, Brazil. The new species differs from other species of the genus by the morphology of copulatory apparatus of the male leg III. KEY WORDS. Brazilian Amazon; canga; Carajás, cave; Neotropics; taxonomy. Arachnids of the order Ricinulei occur in tropical forests (2000). Measurements were taken according to COOKE & SHADAB and caves of New World and Africa, with 72 living species placed (1973) and are given in millimetres (Tab. I). The specimens were in the family Ricinoididae (HARVEY 2003, BONALDO & PINTO-DA- covered with clay, and some setae had clay on the apex, giving ROCHA 2003, COKENDOLPHER & ENRIQUEZ 2004, PINTO-DA-ROCHA & them the false appearance of being clavate. They were partially BONALDO 2007, TOURINHO & AZEVEDO 2007, BOTERO-TRUJILLO & PEREZ cleaned by immersion in water with detergent and exposed to 2008, 2009, NASKRECKI 2008, PLATNICK & GARCIA 2008, TERUEL & an ultrasound cleaner for about 15 minutes. -
George David Birkhoff and His Mathematical Work
GEORGE DAVID BIRKHOFF AND HIS MATHEMATICAL WORK MARSTON MORSE The writer first saw Birkhoff in the fall of 1914. The graduate stu dents were meeting the professors of mathematics of Harvard in Sever 20. Maxime Bôcher, with his square beard and squarer shoes, was presiding. In the back of the room, with a different beard but equal dignity, William Fogg Osgood was counseling a student. Dun ham Jackson, Gabriel Green, Julian Coolidge and Charles Bouton were in the business of being helpful. The thirty-year-old Birkhoff was in the front row. He seemed tall even when seated, and a friendly smile disarmed a determined face. I had no reason to speak to him, but the impression he made upon me could not be easily forgotten. His change from Princeton University to Harvard in 1912 was de cisive. Although he later had magnificent opportunities to serve as a research professor in institutions other than Harvard he elected to remain in Cambridge for life. He had been an instructor at Wisconsin from 1907 to 1909 and had profited from his contacts with Van Vleck. As a graduate student in Chicago he had known Veblen and he con tinued this friendsip in the halls of Princeton. Starting college in 1902 at the University of Chicago, he changed to Harvard, remained long enough to get an A.B. degree, and then hurried back to Chicago, where he finished his graduate work in 1907. It was in 1908 that he married Margaret Elizabeth Grafius. It was clear that Birkhoff depended from the beginning to the end on her deep understanding and encouragement. -
Fundamental Theorems in Mathematics
SOME FUNDAMENTAL THEOREMS IN MATHEMATICS OLIVER KNILL Abstract. An expository hitchhikers guide to some theorems in mathematics. Criteria for the current list of 243 theorems are whether the result can be formulated elegantly, whether it is beautiful or useful and whether it could serve as a guide [6] without leading to panic. The order is not a ranking but ordered along a time-line when things were writ- ten down. Since [556] stated “a mathematical theorem only becomes beautiful if presented as a crown jewel within a context" we try sometimes to give some context. Of course, any such list of theorems is a matter of personal preferences, taste and limitations. The num- ber of theorems is arbitrary, the initial obvious goal was 42 but that number got eventually surpassed as it is hard to stop, once started. As a compensation, there are 42 “tweetable" theorems with included proofs. More comments on the choice of the theorems is included in an epilogue. THOMPSON First published: 2 December 2005 Shortly after the death of Saunders Mac Lane in April, Krishna [Alladi] asked me if I would be willing to speak publicly about Saunders. I agreed to do so, but asked for time to think about and to prepare my remarks. In the meantime, Saunders’s autobiography[2005] has appeared, and it has been helpful to me. I expect that everyone here is aware of the book and the movie “A beautiful mind” which explore the life of John Nash. You will know that for many years, Nash was insane with schizophrenia. For most of us, and certainly for me, insanity is frightening and far from beautiful. I submit that Saunders had a genuinely beautiful mind. Except for an elite few of us, Mac Lane’s life and work do not have the drama and punch of Nash’s odyssey. I see my note today as a recorder, neither a hagiographer nor a debunker. Mac Lane’s mental world had great lucidity and covered much territory. -
