  • 1999 World Youth Championships in Poland
BELIEVE IT. ACHIEVE IT. BELIEVE IT. ACHIEVE IT. Chairman's Message Australian athletics has taken a significant step forward in the past 12 months with the Australian team's seventh placing at the IAAF World Championships in Seville and the Optus Australian Championships at Stadium Australia in February 2000 being two major highlights. Internationally, Australia was very successful in competition with four medallists at the World Championships, Cathy Freeman (gold), Dmitri Markov (silver), Tatiana Grigorieva (bronze) and Kerry Saxby-Junna (bronze). Our junior stars really performed above themselves with Georgie Clarke in the 800m and Jana Pittman in the 400m Hurdles winning gold medals at the 1999 World Youth Championships in Poland. Through the Australian domestic season highlighted by the Optus Grand Prix Series, Australia's athletes set Olympic qualifiers with monotonous regularity. Sprinters Matt Shirvington and Patrick Johnson took men's 100m running to a new level, jumpers Peter Burge, Jai Taurima and Shane Hair established a competitive rivalry in the long jump and throwers Lisa-Marie Vizaniari, Justin Anlezark and Stuart Rendell shot up the world rankings. This information and much more is included in this 49th annual Athletics Australia Handbook of Records and Results. It is the definitive guide to Australian athletics statistics, which is a must for all statisticians, media, athletes, coaches, administrators and those with a general interest in the sport. Starting with this edition, Australian rankings move to calendar year rather than at the conclusion of the Australian domestic season to be consistent with international rankings. Athletics Australia is proud to acknowledge the tremendous support of Cable & Wireless Optus, Ansett Australia, Nike, TNT, Mannatech, News Limited and Fox Sports in the continued development of athletics in this country.
