The following Saturday morning was cold and extremely wet. 6 August - AGSV Boys' A nervousness hovered within the damp atmosphere, as both Representative Teams boys and parents anticipated the AFL Football Grand Final Practice, 1.00pm between Trinity and Marcellin. Success would mean the first Grand Final win since 1976 – 36 years! 6 August - Fair Committee Meeting, The boundary of the Daley Oval was packed with spectators as Hudson House, 8.00pm the ball was bounced at 11.30am. The dominance of green and gold was apparent, as boys who had played their own 7 August - Leadership games earlier moved to the site of the major contest. In 9.00am front of the Cohen Pavilion were crowds of parents and Old 7 August - Junior School Boys, while others watched the spectacle from the Cohen Music Camp concludes Room. 7 August - Leadership The game is best described by School Council member Mr Rod Recognition Dinner, Lyle (OTG 1968-1972): Centre for the Arts, ‘Today we saw an inspiring victory by our boys, the 7.00pm Trinity First XVIII: a stirring Grand Final win over Marcellin at 10 August - Athletics Bulleen. Final scores were Trinity 17.9 to Marcellin 7.8. Our Team Meeting, 8.30am team got off to a somewhat shaky start, in fact, Marcellin kicked the first three goals of the game, a significant 10 August - Junior advantage in greasy conditions. But we stayed together and School AGSV Cross held our nerve. A brilliant goal from the boundary line on Country, PEGS, the siren gave us the lead at the half-time break, but more 11.30am importantly it gave us self belief and momentum. Buttressed by a stirring half time address from our Coach, and an 12 August - Victorian outbreak of sunshine, we poured on the pressure to run away Interschool Cross with the game with a truly outstanding third quarter effort. Country Skiing, Mt There was consistency of purpose and application right across Buller the field by our boys for the whole game, whether in front or behind. An inspiring performance. They did us proud.’

Yes, both of these occasions gave prominence to wonderful achievements associated with Trinity Grammar School. But even more, they were events reflective of a strong Trinity FAMILY.

A further highlight took place on Saturday night with the final performance of the musical ‘Grease’. On this occasion the FAMILY who watched were members of both Trinity and Ruyton communities. The acting, singing and choreography were outstanding. The strength of the Trinity FAMILY is very much enhanced by the association with Ruyton, particularly within the Year 11 and 12 Coordinate Program.

In football there is no substitute for victory (with apologies to Douglas MacArthur – revised by Mr Rod Lyle).

MR RICHARD TUDOR (HEADMASTER)

From the Senior School Back to top

First XVIII Football For the first time since 1976 the Trinity First XVIII was successful in winning the AGSV Premiership, after an often close game against Marcellin at Bulleen last Saturday. Supported by a sizable crowd (of well over 2000) the team fought a tight first half. A timely goal by Joe Campbell on the half-time siren put Trinity in front. The third quarter saw Trinity pull away with many excellent passages of play. The final score was: Trinity 17.9 111 defeated Marcellin 7.8 50.

It would be churlish to pick out highlights from a game which was truly a team effort. The one consistent element of this team, all season, has been the players’ willingness to work closely with each other. We would like to congratulate the following members of the Premiership team:

Mark Yeoman, Thomas Young, Anthony Scott, Jay Kennedy Harris, James Nitsopoulos, Mackenzie Brown, Harry Aikman, Nicholas Meerman, Hugh Tyson, Hugh Curnow, Hugh Beasley, Luke McDonald (Co-C), Mitch Donoghue, Sam Holloway, Connor Lindsey, Duncan Moore, Seb Nicolosi (Co-C), Angus Milham, Joseph Campbell, Tom Cutler, Christos Manoussakis, James Spassopoulos, Hugh Boyle, Will Cooper, Dane Fencaros, Simon Emerson, Callan Palmer, Alex Polidoros, Matt Lasorko.

The performance is a real testament to Co-Captains Seb Nicolosi and Luke McDonald and especially to coach Dr Steven Maus and his support staff, Ms Di Salvitti and Mr Tony Spassopoulos

Final Round of Winter Sport Last week saw the final round of winter sport. Sport is a key component of the School and the winter season, mainly played outside in trying conditions, tests the resolve of many boys. While some teams have not performed as they would have hoped, there have been many successes. The School’s sporting program is very healthy indeed.

Click here for Comparison of AGSV Schools table.

We wish the First XV Rugby team all the best as they play off next weekend for a place in the finals.

We would like to thank all the coaches who train and support the boys throughout the season. In particular we thank the Director of Sport, Mr Brendan Mahony, for his management of the School’s sporting program.

‘Grease’ What a performance! The Director (Mr Tim Schwerdt), Producer (Mrs Christine Lucas-Pannam), Music Director (Mr Paul Smith), cast and crew would have to be pleased with the wonderful performance that was ‘Grease’. Thanks to clever choreography from Ms Lisa Callaghan and strong ensemble and lead singing developed by vocal director Miss Jane Summers, the cast presented a musical full of energy and witty interplay between the characters.

The leads Danny Zuko and Sandy Dumbrowski played by Daniel Beratis and Belle Power were well cast and played their parts to a very high standard. Daniel and Belle were ably supported by Annabel Rodway, Lauren Sibree, William Lodge, Dana Hehir, Ruby Mazzocco, Imogen Walsh, Danny Smith, Neil Kemister, Liam McCoppin, Max Greenham, Jasmine Hoban, Isabelle Power, Tim Ringwood, Dylan Pannam, Brittany Scott and Dennis Wang.

Other members of the cast were: Alice Adams, Laura Aldous, Emma Bannister, Olivia Carey, Patrick Coleman, Taylor Connolly, Hollie Curtis, Eliza Davey, Josh Docking, Sam Gleisner, Angus Hamilton, Alex Hatzikostas, Sarah Heywood, Fred Hiskens, Sam Islip, Sophie Kleiman, Aurora Lee, Andy Lin, Thomas Little , Jennifer McFarland, Schrader McLeay, Kashi Mogensen, Sam Morrison, Jordan Mulvey, Jeremy Neylon, Josh Robertson, Renee Pantas, Harry Tibballs, Olivia Weatherson, Julia Woolrich and Winnie Wu.

Often the support crew for such a production goes unthanked. A show such as this relies on split second timing and team work the production crew. Well done to Stage Manager Miss Emma Officer who was supported by Assistant Stage Manager Nicholas Roberts and an exceptional production crew.

Finally, thanks must also go to the music ensemble lead by Musical Director Mr Paul Smith for its tight performance. We are sure that all who attended ‘Grease’ would have enjoyed the experience.

Congratulations Goethe Institut Award We would like to congratulate Harry Tibballs who was selected for one of the three Goethe Institut and Association of German Teachers of Victoria (AGTV) Year 10 Awards. Only six students were selected for an interview from applications throughout Victoria. The award was officially presented at the German Day Out program at Federation Square last week.

Despite numerous attempts in the second half and some outstanding saves by the opposition’s keeper, Trinity was unable to equalise, finally going down to Oakleigh 1 – 0. Chaplain’s Chat Back to top

In my Year 10 and 9 RE classes we are currently looking at world religions and some of the experiences and beliefs of Indigenous peoples in . It is fascinating to learn of the different ways that people all over the world approach their faith and search for God,and how these perspectives can often enrich our own Christian faith. I am reminded of the story that missionary Vincent Donovan recounts of his time spent with the Masai people of Tanzania.

One day while discussing ‘faith in Christ’ with a Masai elder, the elder suggested that the Kiswahili word that Donovan used for faith was not all that satisfactory – literally meaning to agree to. The elder said that to believe in that way was like a white hunter shooting a lion from a distance. He said for a man to really believe was like a lion going after its prey: his nose and eyes pick up the prey; his powerful legs give him the speed to catch it; he pulls it to him and makes it part of himself. This is the way a lion hunts. This is the way a man believes. This is what faith is.

While Donovan was greatly moved by this description of faith, his wise old teacher was not finished. He went on to say that they did not ask for Donovan to come to their land to deliver his message of finding God, and concluded that: ‘We have not searched for Him. He has searched for us. He has searched us out and found us. All the time we think we are the lion. In the end, the lion is God.’

Coles Vouchers For Schools A third of the sports equipment purchased with Coles Sports for Schools vouchers from 2011 was distributed by the Headmaster during his recent trip to Oenpelli. He reported that “all over Oenpelli, delighted young people were enjoying the proceeds of generous Trinity parents, kicking, throwing and bouncing basketballs, footballs, superballs, etc. The term times have been adjusted to allow for ‘the wet’ and hence the students have another three weeks of holidays during which they can hone their skills.”

In 2011, TGS collected more than 18,000 vouchers and, consequently, sports equipment for three remote Indigenous communities which are connected to Trinity. The School would be very grateful if parents could forward any Sports for Schools vouchers to either the Owen or Long Library. The task of counting and collating would be made easier if vouchers were folded and stapled in batches of 10 – thank you in anticipation.
