A three-time recipient of India’s Ramnath Goenka Award for Excellence in Journalism, and formerly a journalist with NDTV and Senior Special Correspondent for CNN-IBN, he now works for Amnesty International. Rasmus Kleis Nielsen is Director of Research at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the University of Oxford and editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Press/Politics. His work focuses on changes in the news media, political communication, and the role of digital technologies in both. He has done extensive research on journalism, political campaigns, and various forms of activism, and a significant amount of comparative work in Western Europe and beyond. His work has been covered by news media all over the world and he frequently speaks at both academic and industry/professional conferences. David Levy from the Reuters Institute and Sumandro Chattopadhaya from the Centre for Internet and Society in Bangalore deserve special mention as they offered constructive comments on the entire manuscript. 2 Executive Summary In this report, we analyse six examples of digital journalism start-ups developing new editorial priorities, distribution strategies, and funding models for an increasingly digital Indian media environment. After years of slow growth, internet use and digital advertising has grown very rapidly in India in recent years, powered especially by the spread of mobile internet use, and double-digit growth in both the number of users and which in advertising is expected to continue. India now has the second- largest number of internet users in the world and rapid growth in internet use and digital advertising is seen by many as the biggest market opportunity outside China since the internet took off in the United States in the 1990s. The start-ups we examine here are examples of how Indian journalists, technologists, and entrepreneurs are working to develop different content- based (the Quint, Scroll), aggregation-based (InShorts, DailyHunt), or non- profit (The Wire, Khabar Laharirya) models for doing journalism fit for a digital India. Based on interviews with people involved in these starts-ups, and with others working in and around digital journalism in India, as well as material from news coverage, academic research, and industry publications, we show the following: • The rapid growth in internet use and digital advertising has been accompanied by a large number of new start-ups including both for- profit content-based start-ups, aggregation-based start-ups, and non- profit start-ups. There are more new and interesting experiments in Indian journalism than in most other countries in the world. • Most of these start-ups recognise that internet use in India is overwhelmingly and increasingly mobile internet use, and as a consequence prioritise mobile-first approaches, based on mobile- optimised websites and mobile apps more than websites for desktop internet users. While many are currently primarily serving English- speaking Indians, most are keen to move into Hindi and local language content to reach a wider audience as more and more Indians come online. • In terms of distribution, most of these start-ups recognise they are unlikely to be destination sites or apps for large numbers of users at this stage and have prioritised social media distribution to build reach and engagement. (Content-based start-ups and non-profits alike use social media to promote and distribute their content; aggregation- based start-ups have focused on using social media to market their apps.) 3 • Some of these start-ups have grown very quickly in terms of reach, engagement, and numbers of users, but they increasingly face head-to- head competition with both (a) the digital operations of legacy media when it comes to news content and (b) large international technology companies including search engines and social media, especially for attention and advertising. • Sustainable business models take time to build and it is too soon to judge the prospects of the start-ups examined here, but it is clear that the combination of low advertising rates, limited willingness to pay for news, and the dominance of legacy media and international technology companies when it comes to digital advertising means start-ups in India face a challenging environment, even as they benefit from rapid growth in the number of users and in overall advertising spend. The start-ups we look at here – and others like them – are not exempt from the wider challenges facing journalism in India, including business pressures, occasionally weak professional ethics, outside pressures from politicians and others, and issues around owners’ and funders’ potential conflicts of interest. But they are poised to seize the opportunities represented by the rapid growth of internet use and digital advertising in India, they are often innovative and novel in terms of the journalism they do, how they distribute it, and how they try to fund it.

National and state borders have been sealed and swathes of the economy shut down.1 Workers have been laid off and day Ilabourers have lost their incomes. Sanitation workers and other key employees are struggling to get to work without public transport. Those in the informal sector have been particularly hard hit. Migrant workers are desperately trying to return to their villages, in some cases walking hundreds of miles along now empty highways, carrying their children in their arms. Students, too, are trying to get home as their colleges and universities have shut. Those who succeed may be carrying the virus into areas of rural India it has not so far reached. But for many the dis- tances are just too great and they are stuck without an income, facing hunger in the cities that will no longer support them. The ngo sector is trying to step in, and some local-government agencies are supplying food and shelter. But the risk of overcrowding and the spread of disease imperils such interventions. Meanwhile, a combination of disrupted supply chains and panic buy- ing has led to empty shelves in shops. Food prices have risen and some commodities are unavailable. It did not take long for stories of lock- down-related violence to emerge: social media—and increasingly, the mainstream media too—is awash with evidence of the police assaulting people for supposed infractions: shoppers trying to buy essential goods, delivery staff, journalists, doctors and transport workers.

    Department of Media and Film Studies Annual Report 2019-2020 - 1 - Introduction The Media Studies department at Ashoka University is led by journalists, commentators, researchers, academics and investigative reporters who have wide experience in teaching, reporting, writing and broadcasting. The academic team led by Professor Vaiju Naravane, teaches approximately 25 audio- visual and writing elective courses in a given academic year in the Undergraduate Programme. These range from news writing, audio-visual production, social media, media metrics, film appreciation and cinema, digital storytelling to specialized courses in research methodology, political coverage and business journalism. In a spirit of interdisciplinarity, these courses are cross-listed with other departments like Computer Science, Creative Writing, Political Science or Sociology. The Media Studies department also collaborates with the Centre for Social and Behaviour Change to produce meaningful communication messaging to further development goals. The academic year 2019/2020 was rich in terms of the variety and breadth of courses offered and an enrolment of 130 students from UG to ASP and MLS. Several YIF students also audited our courses. Besides academics, the department also held colloquia on various aspects of the media that explored subjects like disinformation and fake news, hate speech, changing business models in the media, cybersecurity and media law, rural journalism, journalism and the environment, or how the media covers rape and sexual harassment. Faculty published widely, were invited speakers at conferences and events and also won recognition and awards. The department organized field trips that allowed students to hone their journalistic and film-making skills in real life situations. Several graduating students found employment in notable mainstream media organisations and production hubs whilst others pursued postgraduate studies at prestigious international universities.

    manali desai GENDERED VIOLENCE AND INDIA’S BODY POLITIC he paradox of rape is that it has a long history and occurs across all countries, yet its meaning can best be grasped through an analysis of specific social, cultural and political environments. Feminist writing on citizenship and the state Thas long noted the relevance of women’s bodies as reproducers of the nation; it is equally important to think about the uses of the sexed body in a political context. A consideration of gendered violence as part of a continuum of embodied assertions of power can not only tell us how masculine supremacy is perpetuated through tolerated repertoires of behaviour, but also help us to understand how forms of class, kinship and ethnic domination are secured—and what happens when they are disrupted. Rape, Joanna Bourke has observed, is a form of social perfor- mance, the ritualized violation of another sexed body.1 This is no less true for such apparently depoliticized though grievous forms of violence as the now infamous gang rape of Jyoti Singh, a young woman returning from a night out in New Delhi in December 2012. In a country where complacency about sexual assault has been the norm, the uproar that followed suggested that an unspoken limit had been crossed. Mass protests across India expressed a very political and public anger with the institutional apathy and impunity of the estab- lishment. The mobilization of feminist groups and youth during this episode succeeded in generating a momentum for change, not least by challenging the stigma associated with reporting rape.

    India freedomhouse.org /report/freedom-press/2014/india Freedom of the Press While India’s vibrant media remained the freest in South Asia in 2013, press freedom in the country was threatened by several factors, including interference by media owners in editorial content in the run-up to the 2014 national elections, and an expansion of censorship and surveillance of digital platforms. An increase in journalist killings, continuing legal actions against journalists, and the temporary suspension of all television, print, and internet services in Kashmir were also issues of concern during the year. Although the constitution guarantees the freedoms of speech and expression, legal protections are not always sufficiently upheld by the courts or respected by government officials. A number of laws that remain on the books can be used to restrict media freedom. The sedition law, formally Section 124A of the 1860 penal code, outlaws expression that can cause “hatred or contempt, or excites or attempts to excite disaffection” toward the government. The 1923 Official Secrets Act provides authorities with the right to censor security-related articles and prosecute members of the press. State and national authorities, along with the courts, have also punished sensitive reporting by using other security laws, criminal defamation legislation, bans on blasphemy and hate speech, and contempt-of-court charges. Journalists Lingaram Kodopi and Sudhir Dhawale were separately charged and jailed under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) and the sedition law due to allegations that they were supporting the Maoist insurgency. Kodopi was released on bail in November 2013 after more than two years in prison, while Dhawale, arrested in 2011, remained in custody at year’s end.

A May 2014 national election seated a new Indian government led by the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and new Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Top U.S. officials express eagerness to engage India’s new leadership and re-energize what some see as a relationship flagging in recent years. High hopes for the engagement have become moderated as expectations held in both capitals remain unmet, in part due to a global economic downturn that has dampened commercial activity. Yet the two countries, estranged through the Cold War period, have now routinized cooperative efforts through myriad working groups on an array of bilateral and global issues. Prime Minister Modi is known as an able administrator, having overseen impressive economic development in 15 years as chief minister of India’s Gujarat state. But he also is a controversial figure for his Hindu nationalist views and for communal rioting that killed up to 2,000 people, most of them Muslims, in Gujarat in 2002. His BJP made history by becoming the first party to win an outright parliamentary majority in 30 years, meaning India’s federal government is no longer constrained by the vagaries of coalition politics.
