    India- Holy See Relations Diplomatic relations between India and the Holy See were established soon after India’s independence in 1948. India’s Ambassador in Berne, Switzerland, has traditionally been accredited to the Holy See which maintains a Nunciature (Embassy) in New Delhi, presently headed by a Nuncio (Ambassador). India has the second largest Catholic population in Asia including those from Kerala dating from Apostolic times. A large number of Indians have joined various Roman Catholic Orders and many occupy high positions within the Catholic Church including those in Rome. India and Indians have a positive image in the world Catholic community. The Holy See has always acknowledged the importance of India, both in global and Asian terms. There have been three Papal visits to India so far. The first Pope to visit India was Pope Paul IV, who visited Mumbai in 1964 to attend the International Eucharistic Congress. Pope John Paul II visited India in February 1986 during which he visited different parts of India, including Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata and met with the Indian leadership. He again visited India on a State Visit from 5-7 November, 1999. He met with the then President Shri K.R. Narayanan, Vice President and the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee. During the visit he presided over the concluding celebrations of the special assembly of Synod of Bishops of Asia and he signed and released the post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation. New Delhi was specially chosen by the Pope to hold this Special Concluding celebrations. The special assembly of Synod of Bishops of Asia was held at the Vatican from April 19 to May 14, 1998.

However every Easter is a renewal of the assurance of our destiny which is not just to fade away here. It is the guarantee that our faith is not futile and that our proclamation is not in vain (1 Cor 15: 17). God out of his infinite love and mercy gave His only son to redeem this world. (John 3:16). The Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, suffered, died and was resurrected so that we may have life in abundance. (John 10:10). All this was realized only because the Mercy of God became flesh in the person of Jesus Christ, our Master. The Year of Mercy reiterates this reality. And the feast of resurrection, in this context, becomes for us an obligation to ‘be merciful like our heavenly Father’ (Luke 6:46). This obligation is to be lived in our daily lives through our small acts of love and kindness to our fellow beings especially those in need.

    Catholic Missions in Japan and China During the 16th and 17th centuries Catholic missionaries made great progress in the two largest Asian countries of Japan and China. Both countries presented enormous challenges, not only due to language and cultural barriers, but also to the fact that both countries were highly civilized and had well respected and long established religious traditions of their own. In spite of tremendous effort and the successful conversion of thousands of souls, both missions collapsed so by the end of the 17th century, almost all progress had been lost. In Japan, the Catholic efforts to evangelize ended dramatically when a new emperor chose to persecute and execute his Christian subjects and all westerners were forbidden to enter the country for almost 200 years. In China, the collapse of the Ming dynasty did great harm to the missions but their killing blow was self-inflicted: Jesuits and other religious orders disagreed on whether to forbid Ancestor worship and the conflict led to the withdrawal of Chinese missions. Christian Persecutions and the '26 Martyrs of Japan' Japan opened its doors to St. Francis Xavier, but the clever intellectual people of Japan were not so easily converted as the simple pariahs of India. Long and learned discussions with the Buddhist priests of Japan were necessary before they would yield to the preaching of Xavier. His austerity of life, his commanding eloquence, his miracles, and an irresistible charm of manner, won him many converts; but the pride of the Bonzes and the dissolute habits of the people, were, at times, insurmountable obstacles.

    ARTICLE The Archive and the Festival Lisa Voigt The Ohio State University, Columbus, United States KEYWORDS ABSTRACT archive This article offers a brief overview and assessment of the opportunities and challenges that repertoire written, visual, and digital records hold for the study of early modern festivals, using Diana early modern festivals Taylor’s terminology of the “archive” and the “repertoire” and examples from colonial Latin American and early modern Iberian festivals as points of departure. While archival records are royal entry far from transparent records of the events, they can help to illuminate the multiple, sometimes Philip III conflicting agendas behind both the festivals and their pictorial or textual representation. Digital Lisbon archives promise to make early modern festivals more broadly accessible for comprehensive and comparative study, but they carry their own risks by disconnecting both researchers and records colonial Latin America from the embodied presence of contemporary festive repertoires.
