Diocesan Bulletin - January, 2015 Mar Jacob Angadiath with His Holiness Pope Francis at the Canonization of Saint Chavara Kuriakose & Saint Euphrasia The faith confession of St. Thomas the Apostle, “My Lord and My God”, stands in the history as the most profound confession on Jesus’ true identity. ‘Lord’ and ‘God’ are the equivalent words for the Greek terms ‘Kyrios’ and ‘Theos’ respectively used to denote the Hebrew words ‘Yahweh’ and ‘Elohim’, two expressions used to address the Almighty One. Making use of these words to the Resurrected Lord, Thomas equates Jesus to the Absolute Deity. He connects the Old Testament and New Testament understanding of God. CCHA Report, 2 (1934-1935), 12-21 THE FIRST HUNDRED YEARS OF THE SOCIETY OF JESUS BY THE REV. F. H. BRADLEY, P H. D. In the year 1534 Henry VIII proclaimed his Act of Supremacy, declaring himself sole head of the Church in England, and thereby laid the cornerstone of the schism that was to develop into a heresy and separate England from the Church of Christ. The same year John Calvin began his career as a heretic and started the movement that worked such havoc in France, in England, and in Scotland. Seventeen years earlier, Luther had hurled defiance at the Pope and begun the breaking up of Christian unity. While all of these agents were working to destroy Christ's work and to dismember His kingdom, Divine Providence was preparing a band of workers to undo the evil that had been done, to strengthen the fortresses of the Old World, and to establish outposts in pagan lands where vast numbers of new members of the great Christian family should replace those who had fallen away or who had been separated from the Church by the disrupting forces of the Reformation. Ignatius Loyola and his little band of religious pronounced their first vows on the Feast of the Assumption of our Blessed Lady, August 15th, 1534. This group of zealous men of God did not have any intention, at the outset, of being special counter-reformers, but it was God's will that they should be one of the most powerful factors in undoing the work of Luther and his followers on the continent of Europe, and in swelling the ranks of Christ's army with fresh recruits from the four corners of the earth.

Number XIX September—November 2008 LET US ALSO GO, THAT WE MAY DIE WITH HIM John 11:16 APOSTLE Newsletter of the Society of Saint Pius X, 1 Marcel Lefebvre Place, Annie Nagar, Seevalaperi Road , Palayamkottai, TN 627002, India Dear Friends and Benefactors, There never was anything so perilous or so exciting as orthodoxy. It was sanity: and to be sane is more dramatic than to be mad. If G. K. Chesterton were a contempo- rary of His Lordship Bishop Richard Wil- liamson, he might well have had the Bishop in mind when he wrote these lines, for His Lordship’s orthodox view of the world is nothing if not dramatic. “There will be a great chastisement,” His Lord- ship repeatedly warns, “natural or man- made, by which God will punish mankind for its infidelity to His law. He will purge the Church of its modern churchmen for they have lost the Faith.” Modern churchmen, as you might expect, are none too pleased by these calamitous prophecies, but history has reminded us time and time again: if you play fast and loose with the truth, with the sacraments and with souls, God will not be mocked; His justice will prevail. G.K.C. appropriately continues: It is always easy to be a modernist; as it is easy to be a snob. … It is always simple to fall; there are infinity of angles at which one falls, only one at which one stands. To have fallen into any one of the fads from Gnosticism to Christian Science would have indeed been His Lordship Bishop Williamson in India.

  • India- Holy See Relations
India- Holy See Relations Diplomatic relations between India and the Holy See were established soon after India’s independence in 1948. India’s Ambassador in Berne, Switzerland, has traditionally been accredited to the Holy See which maintains a Nunciature (Embassy) in New Delhi, presently headed by a Nuncio (Ambassador). India has the second largest Catholic population in Asia including those from Kerala dating from Apostolic times. A large number of Indians have joined various Roman Catholic Orders and many occupy high positions within the Catholic Church including those in Rome. India and Indians have a positive image in the world Catholic community. The Holy See has always acknowledged the importance of India, both in global and Asian terms. There have been three Papal visits to India so far. The first Pope to visit India was Pope Paul IV, who visited Mumbai in 1964 to attend the International Eucharistic Congress. Pope John Paul II visited India in February 1986 during which he visited different parts of India, including Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata and met with the Indian leadership. He again visited India on a State Visit from 5-7 November, 1999. He met with the then President Shri K.R. Narayanan, Vice President and the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee. During the visit he presided over the concluding celebrations of the special assembly of Synod of Bishops of Asia and he signed and released the post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation. New Delhi was specially chosen by the Pope to hold this Special Concluding celebrations. The special assembly of Synod of Bishops of Asia was held at the Vatican from April 19 to May 14, 1998.

  • St. Paul Miki 1562–1597 • Japan
February 6 St. Paul Miki 1562–1597 • Japan St. Paul Miki was the son of a Japanese military leader. His family converted to Christianity when he was a child, and Paul was baptized at five years old. He studied under the Jesuit missionaries in Japan and later became a Jesuit himself. In that time in Japan, there were many political and religious tensions between the Japanese and the Christians that came from Spain and Portugal. The Japanese lord, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, ordered the arrest of twenty-six Christians at Kyoto. Paul Miki had just completed his eleven-year training as a novice, and he was one of the twenty-six Christians arrested. The arrested Christians had their ears cut of as a sign of disrespect, and they were paraded through the streets of Kyoto. Paul Miki stood out among the crowd. The onlookers recognized him as the son of the nobleman and remembered that he could even have been a Samurai if he wasn’t a Christian. Many in the crowd felt pity for the Christians, and some were even converted by their heroic example. The twenty-six Christians were then marched over six hundred miles from Kyoto to Nagasaki. They were told that if they gave up their Faith, they would go free. But not one of them rejected Jesus. When they reached Nagasaki, they were crucified high on a hill like Jesus was. Paul Miki gave a final sermon from his cross. He declared that he was Japanese born and that he was being crucified because he was a Christian.

However every Easter is a renewal of the assurance of our destiny which is not just to fade away here. It is the guarantee that our faith is not futile and that our proclamation is not in vain (1 Cor 15: 17). God out of his infinite love and mercy gave His only son to redeem this world. (John 3:16). The Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, suffered, died and was resurrected so that we may have life in abundance. (John 10:10). All this was realized only because the Mercy of God became flesh in the person of Jesus Christ, our Master. The Year of Mercy reiterates this reality. And the feast of resurrection, in this context, becomes for us an obligation to ‘be merciful like our heavenly Father’ (Luke 6:46). This obligation is to be lived in our daily lives through our small acts of love and kindness to our fellow beings especially those in need.
