18. THALIR - ANIMATION CENTRE Mamandur, Villupuram In the Archdiocese of Pondicherry - Cuddalore - 2018

This new house is built in Mamandur, near Villupuam. Br. A.J. Mathew the then Provincial bought four acres of land for an animation centre. It was a major plan. As part of the progress, to from a community, we have constructed five rooms, two staircases, and a common toilet. The blessing and opening took place on the 21st of March 2018 by Most Rev. Anthony Anandarayar, the Archbishop of Pondicherry - Cuddalore. 94 Directory of Amala Annai Province HISTORY OF OUR MISSION (Burkina Faso) Br. John Corriveau our General Mnister & Fr. Anil Sequeira our General Councillor Visited our United Amala Annai province in July 1998. They proposed to take over Burkina Faso. Our provincial team said “Fiat” Yes. Thus by the letter of January 04, 1999 the General Council had entrusted the mission of Burkina Faso to Amala Annai Province. The first brother Fr. Flaubert landed in Burkina Faso December 22, 1999. 1. FOUNDATIONAL PERIOD (2000-2004) 1.1. Arrival of the first batch of six friars in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso (Br. Flobert, Br. John Selvaraj, Br. Britto, Br. Kennedy, Br. Xavier Kumar and Br. Rozario). In fact, Br. Flobert arrived in Ouagadougou on 22nd December 1999 itself, while Br. John Selvaraj, Br. Britto, Br. Kennedy and Br. Xavier Kumar reached Ouagadougou on 6th January 2000. Br. Rozario was the last one to join the Burkina Faso mission in the first week of December 2000. 1.2. First phase of the foundational period On 10th December 2000 Fr. John Corriveau GM inaugurated the mission and dedicating to St. Francis of Assisi. The Arch Diocese erected the parish and dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi on the same day. Accordingly, Br. John Selvaraj, Br. Kennedy and Br. Flobert were appointed in Ouagadougou and Br. Britto, Br. Xavier Kumar and Br. Rozario were appointed in Manga. Correspondingly, two new parishes were erected in view of entrusting them to the pastoral care of the capuchins: the parish of St. Francis of Assisi at Karpaala in Ouagadougou on 10th December 2000; erection of the parish of St. Antony of Padua at Gomboussougou in Manga in January 2001. 1.3. The Decline : the diminishing of the personnel and a shocking tragedy (Jan 2002 - May 2003). By mid 2002, three friars namely, Br. John Selvaraj, Br. Kumar and Br. Kennedy left the mission definitively to return to the province for good. There was a temporary reinforcement in the year 2002 in the form of three scholastics Br. Damien, Br. Amaladass and Br. Sanjay. But, that could not help avoid the eventual withdrawal of the capuchin presence from the parish of St. Antony of Padua in Manga in June 2002. At this juncture, Br. Rozario was sent to Directory of Amala Annai Province 95 USA for Franciscan studies for one year. With the subsequent departure of the scholastics in April 2003 to pursue their theological studies in Tamil Nadu, the mission personnel thinned down to Br. Flobert and Br. Britto. And tragedy struck during the absence of Br. Britto who had accompanied the scholastics back to India, when Br. Flobert succumbed to a severe attack of malaria on the fateful night of 3rd May 2003. In the following week, he was buried in the parish land itself. “I realised immediately that this passing away of the first capuchin missionary in our soil marked the real beginning of the capuchin mission in Burkina Faso, after almost three years of their presence in our midst.... It is most fitting that his mortal remains be buried in the very soil which he has indelibly sealed with his life.... May he be the symbol of the mission sown as a seed in Burkina not just to germinate but to grow, flower and be fruitful.” These very words of Rt. Rev. Jean Marie Untaani Compaore, the Archbishop of Ouagadougou, in the course of his homily during the funeral Mass of Br. Flobert, encapsulate in short the ebb and tide of the capuchin missionary enterprise in Burkina Faso by Amala Annai Province of Tamil HISTORY Nadu, India. 1.4. The Revival: the arrival of the second batch of pioneers and the taking over of the St. Francis of Assisi parish completely by the capuchins. (June 2003 – December 2005) In the wake of the tragic demise of the Br. Flobert, the capuchin mission in Burkina Faso was faced with the risk of being abandoned once and for all. But the province responded with a positive intent by sending a new batch of missionaries to Burkina Faso. Thus, Br. Rozario returned to Ouagadougou from New York to join Br. Britto the only remaining capuchin in Burkina Faso. In the following months, Br. Vincent Babu, Br. Harry and Br. Vianney were rushed to the West African country in order to stop the decline and start the revival. One important aspect of this development is that the young and energetic friars quickly adapted themselves to the pastoral needs of the people, and devoted themselves, heart and soul to the learning of French and moorey. The diocese recognised the efforts of the newly- arrived friars and, finally, on 15 August 2004 entrusted the parish of St. Francis of Assisi to the pastoral care exclusively of the capuchins. Bro. Britto was installed as the parish priest and Bros. Babu, Harry and Vianney were appointed as his assistants. Bro. Rozario has been given the charge of the parish accounts. 96 Directory of Amala Annai Province Ever since, a lot of things started changing and evolving. The young parish gradually matured in its organisation, and, above all, the friars, who had then been continuously engaged in learning the languages, were able thereafter to run the parish on their own. At this juncture, the friars did not have any land or friary of their own, nor were they a legally registered society in Burkina Faso. But, notwithstanding the absence of any concrete structure or property, this period of history of the mission could be marked as the beginning of the transition from the moment of foundation to the moment of consolidation. Because the new missionaries were deeply committed, their morale was high and with the widening scope of new ministries and projects, the optimism was infinite. 2. PERIOD OF CONSOLIDATION (2005 – 2010) 2.1. After the taking over of the parish of St. Francis of Assisi, the first major step in the consolidation of the capuchin mission in Burkina Faso was the construction of the first capuchin friary. Till then the friars had been living in a rented house which could do justice to all the religious and fraternal aspects of our community living and or the need for privacy of the individual friars. Dedicated to St. Padré Pio, the first stone of the new capuchin friary was laid on 28th January 2005 by the then Tamil Nadu provincial Br. Diwakar and its blessing and inauguration was held on 18th June 2005 by the then French provincial Br. André Ménard in the presence of the archbishop of Ouagadougou SE Mgr Jean-Marie Compaoré.

2.2. The second important step was the recruitment of the local HISTORY boys for the capuchin Order and the beginning of the postulancy formation in Burkina Faso from 2008 onwards. 2.3. The third remarkable step took place also in 2008 with the construction of a social work centre called Centre Frère Flobert, from which evolved well-structured and centralised approach to all our social work endeavours, including all our collaborations with various international organisations. 2.4. The fourth significant step was creation of the legally registered society called Association de l’Ordre des Frères Mineurs Capucins in 2009. 2.5. The fifth noteworthy milestone was the purchase and registering of 15 acres of land in the name of the capuchin Order in 2010. This period also witnessed the increase of the missionaries from five to six, not including the scholastic Br. Jerald Smith, who was sent here for the mission experience. To precise further, Br. Britto returned definitively to the province after serving in the Burkina Faso for five years. But Br. Daniel Rex and Br. Amaladass joined the ranks in the Sahelian mission. But more importantly, the local boys though in small numbers, started joining the capuchin Order. 98 Directory of Amala Annai Province STATISTICS OF BURKINA FASO MISSION Number of OTHER PARAMETERS OF THE BURKINA FASO MISSION friars in the PERIOD SOCIAL INITIAL mission MISSION PARISH WORK FORMATION 2000 6 missionaries No friary, no land (Br. PERIOD OF ONGOING GROWTH (2011) 3.1. The most important indicator of our mission growing towards a full-fledged implantation is having the indigenous capuchin friars. In 2011, the first Burkinabe capuchin made his simple profession. By the September this year (2013), we shall have three more indigenous friars in temporary profession. On an average, every year two or three candidates from Burkina Faso advance to novitiate. 3.2. Before the end of this year, for the first time, the number of missionaries in Burkina Faso will cross six to become eight, because more will be joining us in September this year (2013). This is really a new high, if we consider the fact that in the last two years, two missionaries have gone back to the province and one friar has gone to India for higher studies. Simultaneously, three new friars have already joined us last year (2012). 4. DEMAND TO OFFICIALLY ELEVATE THE BURKINA FASO MISSION TO THE STATUS OF A DELEGATION 4.1. Officially, the Burkina Faso capuchin mission is considered as a mere “house of presence”. 4.2. The capuchin mission in Burkina Faso has seen thirteen years of existence. More importantly, it has been growing from strength to strength. It is not just a vegetating presence, but an entity which is dynamic, church building, HISTORY expanding and actively witnessing to the fecundity of the capuchin charism in Burkina Faso. 4.3. The capuchin charism is very much visible in its rich and diverse vocational forms, as follows: „h serving the local church through parish ministry „h preferential service to the poorest of the poor through social work „h Fraternal communion and solidarity with other religious in Burkina Faso through classes, retreats and recollections, confessions and seminars, etc. „h Spreading of the capuchin Franciscan ideals through the promotion of local vocations, networking with other branches of the Franciscan family, SFO ministry, etc. 5. FROM 2012 TO 2018: 5.1. The year 2012 was a crucial and difficult moment in the mission. Because all most, most of the old missionaries returned to India. (Brs. Babu, Rex, Amaladass, Harry (for holidays) And Fr. Vianny met with an accident. Hence it as important period to build up the mission. But God’s grace was overshadowing upon the mission. From the year 2012 to 2018 there had been many missionaries continually flowing to Burkina Faso. Fr. Lourdu Xavier, Br. Albert as a regent entered into mission in the year 2012. During these period only three brothers were taking care of the mission. They are Br. Rozario, Br. Lourdu Xavier and Br. Albert. 100 Directory of Amala Annai Province 5.2. The important event: In the year 2013 November 11th the presence in Burkina Faso became a delegation by the degree of our General Minister. It was named Provincial Delegation of Burkina Faso. During the Provincial Visit on December 8th on the province day our Mission was officially declared as a Delegation. Br. Antony Rozario was appointed as a First Delegate Provincial. 5.3. In the year 2013 – 2016 the brothers like Br. Salasia Samuvel, (Br. Satish, Br. Daniel, Br. Stephen- as regents) Br. Veda Sahaya Selvaraj, Br. Joseph Arun and Br. Apsolam immediately after their ordination volunteered themselves to serve God’s mission. 5.4. As you all know we have our own formation house and we lack formators. The new missionaries were just after their ordinations and do not have much experience of being a formators. So we thought of equipping some of our missionaries in the field of Formation. With this idea 2015 Fr. Harry Joseph left Rome to study Franciscanism and spirituality. In the same way in the Year 2016 July, Br. Vianny has gone to France to study Cannon Law. Also 2017 Br. Arun Joseph went to Rome to-do his studies. 5.5 On 2nd July 2015 we have blessed new Formation house at Silmisin by our provincial minister Rev. Fr. John Antony. 5.6. In the year 2016, October 04, Fr. Lourdu Xavier is appointed as a parish priest of St. Francis of Assisi Parish. 5.7. On June 26, 2016 we have celebrated the Silver Jubilee of our brave missionary Br. Rozario in a grand manner. 5.8. January 2017, Br. Veda Sahaya Selvaraj was appointed as a Delegate provincial. 5.9. The brother who came as a regent with his strong will and dedication he continued his theological studies in Burkina Faso and finally he was ordained as a priest in India on July 2017 and returned to mission to serve God’s people. 5.10. August 06, 2017 was a historical day in our mission. The First local brother Br. Simplice gave his perpetual profession. 5.11. September 24th, 2017 we have begun the postulancy programme in our formation house. 5.12. Our General Councilor Rev. Fr. Hugo initiated the programme of Lay Volunteers in our mission in the year 2017. 5.13. According to the official communication of March 22, 2018 Our mission was named under the patronage of “SOLANUS CASEY CAPUCHIN DELEGATION”. 5.14. The old Missionaries Br. Harry Joseph and Br. Vincent Babu returned to Mission 2017. 5.15. In the year 2017 we have begun collaboration with Marche province, Italy. our student friars who study Philosophy and Theology in Benin will be considered as their students. (Marche province will take care of all the study expenses of our Philosophy and Theology Students) Directory of Amala Annai Province 101 HISTORY OF FRIARIES IN BURKINA FASO

01. ST. PIO FRATERNITY Burkina Faso, W. Africa In the Archdiocese of Ouagadougou - 2000 St. Pio Fraternity is in Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso. The Parish, dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi was established on 10 th December 2000 in the presence of Br. John Corriveau, the then Minister General. Br. A. John Britto was the first Capuchin parish priest. The team of friars caters to the needs of seven substations in the Archdiocese of Ouagadougou. In the beginning, the friars resided in a rented house as the church and the friary were yet to be built. The local language, spoken here is ‘Moore’. The first Capuchin friary in Burkina Faso was built and inagurated on 18th June 2005. His Grace Rt. Rev. Jean-Marie Untaani Compaore, the Archbishop of Ouagadougou, presided over the concelebrated thanksgiving mass at St. Francis of Assisi parish church after which ‘St. Pio Friary’ was blessed by Br. Andre Menard, the Minister Provincial of the province of France. HISTORY

02. ST. JOSEPH FRATERNITY Silmissin, Burkina Faso, W. Africa In the Archdiocese of Ouagadougou - 2013

The Tamil Capuchin brothers, in Burkina Faso, bought 15 acers of land at Silmissin, Tiguendalgue, in the diocese of Ouagadougou. This place, which is 25 kms away from St. Pio Fraternity, belongs to the parish of Christ Roide Piise in Ouagadougou. On 21.12.2008, Brs. Harry Joseph, Vincent Babu & Mr. Herve Ouédraogo met the local Naba and signed the documents with him for 2,750,000-CFA. The land was sur- veyed by Mr. Marius Gayre on 29.05.2007. As the Government of Burkina Faso officially announced, we had the hold of land on 19th March 2009, thus receiving Permis d’exploitation’. On 09.09.2013, Br. Jean Bertin, the then General Councillor for Africa, laid the foundation stone for theformation house to be built over here. On 30.09.2013 onwards, our friars (Br. Gerald Deva Sagayam Smith - the first Guardian & Br. Harry - the procurator) started living here as a community. This house was named as St. Joseph Fraternity. The newly built formation house was blessed by Br. John Antony, our Minister Pro- vincial, on 02.07.2015. Thus, we have established the second fraternity in Burkina Faso Mission. 102 Directory of Amala Annai Province A Short biography of SERVANT OF GOD Fr. JOHN PETER SAVARINAYAGAM, OFM. Cap., (1941 – 1979) His Birth and Early Life : Fr. John Peter was born to Savarinayagam and Thomaiammal on May 29, 1941 at Thiruppanthuruthy, district. Being childless for about 15 years his parents prayed to St. for an issue and Fr. John Peter and his twin brother were the result of their earnest prayer. The twins were baptized as Peter and Paul at the church of Our Lady of Good Health at Thiruppanthuruthy (Kumbakonam diocese) on June 15, 1941. He was a native of Michealpatti, a catholic village but his father moved temporarily their resi- dence to Thiruppanthuruthy due to his job at the time of his birth. He had his primary education at his home town Michealpatti and his high school at . Franciscan Capuchin Vocation : Fr. John Peter had a burning desire to become a Capuchin priest because he was an ardent devotee of St Anthony of Padua. After his high school he joined the Capuchin Seraphic Seminary at Shanthi Ashram, Coimbatore in 1959. Having completed his Latin course, he was received in the novitiate of Monte Mariano, Mangalore (Karnataka) on May 14, 1962 and he was given a religious name Roland. He made his first profession the following year on May 16. Fr. John Peter did his philosophical studies at Thrissur, Kerala; on completion of it he made his solemn commitment on May 16, 1966. He pursued his theological studies at The Friary, Kotagiri from 1966 -69. Throughout his formation he was identified as prayerful, simple, humble, docile, reliable, open, hardworking, and ascetic. Fr. John Peter SAVARINAYAGAM was ordained a priest on December 11, 1969 at St. Mary's Cathedral, Madurai by His Grace Most. Rev. Justin Diraviam, the archbishop of Madurai. As a Young Priest : During the formative years, Fr. John Peter was noted for his keenness and austerity. He was also a man of self-sacrifice and dedication. After his ordination, he was assigned as a teaching staff at minor seminary, Amalashram. As a member of the Capuchin Mission Band he also undertook preaching ministry in a few parishes. After two years of service in the formation, he was transferred to Fatima Church, Coimbatore as assistant parish priest in 1972. After a year again he was called back to Amalashram and was assigned as assistant director of the minor seminary. Directory of Amala Annai Province 103 A Deep Search to be a Mystic : Having put in two years of selfless service in the formation, he was sent to Rome to specialize on spirituality. When he was there in Rome he showed much interest in the spirituality of the great mystics St Teresa of Avila and St John of the Cross. His calm and serene life pushed him towards these great Carmelite mystics. Fr. John Peter learned quickly Spanish and travelled to Spain on vacations and mastered the mys- tic spirituality. Spiritual Giant : Having completed successfully his licentiate in Spirituality, Fr. John Peter returned to the province in 1976. Once again he was appointed at Amalashram and was assigned as director of the minor seminary. In addition, he was also appointed as spiritual father to all the Capuchin formees of the province. In 1978, he was elected as one of the provincial councillors. Besides his service at Amalashram, he rendered often his spiritual animation to the sisters of Trichy St Anne's and Holy Cross. He was always well appreciated for his spiritual discourses and holy life. He was a man of simplicity and had a big heart for the poor and the suffering. He spent lavishly his time in prayer and meditation. Even at night he kept awake to pray before the Eucharistic Lord and was always faithful to all the activities of the fraternity. He was a man of soft spoken and never grumbled against any thing or anyone. He manifested beautifully his spirituality through his simple, serene, and holy life. HISTORY Sister Sickness and Sister Death : It was in the month of August 1978 that Fr. John Peter complained of pain in the stomach. One of the abnormal glands taken for biopsy revealed that it might be cancer. First, he was treated at Visuvanathan hospital in Trichy and later he was taken to Stanley government general hospital, Chennai. Here he was operated on and the suspicion of cancer was confirmed. fifteen days after the operation Fr. John Peter passed away (38) on March 2, 1979. His mortal remains were brought to Amalashram, Trichy and were laid to rest in our friary on the following day. In the hot summer, suddenly there was an unusual heavy rain at the time of his burial. During his illness never he complained of anything, with innocent smile he always endured his pain and agony. Many came to sympathise with him but he used to repeat the words of St. Paul “For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain” (Phil 1: 21). He was a true suffering servant of Lord Jesus Christ. His holiness came to limelight at the time of his illness and every one still wonders at his forbearance. He was indeed a humble servant of the Crucified Lord and a true son of Father St Francis. A man of Holiness : In Fr. John Peter, we have lost a spiritual giant. His studiousness is second to none. All those who have come into contact with him have words of high appreciation on his simplicity and spirit of poverty and above all his detachment. With regard to his personal belongings he hardly had the bare necessities. He will be ever remembered with a deep sense of gratitude for his genuine commitment. We may meet many good souls in our life but we will never meet another John Peter SAVARINAYAGAM. 104 Directory of Amala Annai Province CONFERENCE OF THE CAPUCHIN MAJOR SUPERIORS (CCMSI), INDIA S No Jurisdiction Name Email - Mob & Tel 1.
