Described by Fiona Kidman as a ‘ravishing, immersing read’, A Strange Beautiful Excitement is a ‘wild ride’ through the Wellington of Katherine Mansfield’s childhood. From the grubby, wind-blasted streets of Thorndon to the hushed green valley of Karori, author Redmer Yska, himself raised in Karori, retraces Mansfield’s old ground: the sights, sounds and smells of the rickety colonial capital, as experienced by the budding writer. Along the way his encounters and dogged research – into her Beauchamp ancestry, the social landscape, the festering, deadly surroundings – lead him (and us) to reevaluate long- held conclusions about the writer’s shaping years. -
The Frances Hodgkins Fellowship 2021
THE FRANCES HODGKINS FELLOWSHIP 2021 The Fellowship was established by the University Council in 1962 and was initiated by the generous interest of anonymous friends of the University. The general purpose of the Frances Hodgkins Fellowship Fund is to aid and encourage painters and sculptors in the practice of their art, to associate them with the life of the University, and at the same time to foster an interest in the Arts within the University. CONDITIONS OF AWARD 1. The Fellowship shall be open to any man or woman normally resident in New Zealand who in the opinion of the Selection Committee: (a) has executed sufficient work as a painter or sculptor to show that they are possessed of some talent as such, and (b) is a serious artist who will be diligent in their endeavours to practice, improve and develop such talent, and (c) will benefit from holding of the Fellowship. 2. Applicants for the Fellowship need not possess a degree or diploma or have attained any particular educational standard or be a member of any art society or group of artists or of any other body. 3. Other qualifications and considerations between applicants for the award of the Fellowship being more or less equal, preference may be given to an applicant under the age of forty years. 4. Full time teachers of art shall not be eligible to apply for the Fellowship except in special circumstances of which the Selection Committee shall be the sole judge. 5. The Fellowship shall normally be awarded for a term of one year, but may be awarded for a shorter period. -

81 IMPORTANT PAINTINGS AND CONTEMPORARY 2014 7 AUGUST ART: R E A + B T J T C IMPORTANT PAINTINGS AND CONTEMPORARY ART THURSDAY 7 AUGUST AT 6.30PM “But for art, man would die of boredom” — Francis Newton Souza Welcome to ART+OBJECT’s second 2014 Important Paintings and Contemporary Art catalogue. The fi rst half of 2014 has seen A+O introduce a number of diverse collections to the market, all bearing the hallmark of well documented provenance and each of which was met with an enthusiastic response. The Strip Club Collection which was a feature of the April Important Paintings catalogue showcased the latest of NZ contemporary art and represented the collective choices of a group engaging with the art of the 2000s. A+O’s Modernism in New Zealand collection in May revealed a collection of works by Theo Schoon from the 1940s which had been held by one family for over ART+OBJECT sixty years. This body of work sat in a seminal position within 3 Abbey Street the story of New Zealand art post WWII. The connections Newton, Auckland between the work of a European trained Dutch émigré and our contemporary scene may seem tenuous – the common thread PO Box 68 345 being that the work was produced in Aotearoa – but the links Newton are there nonetheless in our artists’ quest to engage with, Auckland 1145 defi ne and expand the boundaries of our visual arts discourse. New Collector’s Art including The Ian Scott Collection of Twentieth Century Landscape Paintings and a private Wellington collection of 20th Century British and New Zealand prints Wednesday 21 February The Pat O’Connor Collection of New Zealand Studio Pottery Thursday 22 February Welcome to A+O’s first catalogue of 2018. This catalogue features a number of fascinating collections that reveal insights into New Zealand, International and applied arts production in the immediate post WWII Years. Ian Scott (1945–2013) is an iconic New Zealand modern artist who burst onto the scene in the 1960s with his joyous Pop Art inspired canvases. In the 1970s his abstract ‘lattice’ works were at the centre of the burgeoning New Zealand art scene. In the 1980s and 90s Scott was working very much within the conceptual arc of post-modernism with canvases that conflated iconic New Zealand imagery by artists such as Colin McCahon and Gordon Walters with blazing overlaid text and found imagery. In some of these we can see traditional Kelliher Prize period landscapes interwoven into more avant- garde depictions of the landscape, revealing the tensions between the more traditional and mainstream approaches to landscape painting and the bolder modernist period images that underpin the formation of what is now referred to as the New Zealand canon. Initiated in 1956, The Kelliher Prize soon became the most prestigious art award for landscape painting in New Zealand. In 2018 this is increasingly the domain of international art fairs. This is a rare year in which local art fans will have had the opportunity to attend four major art fairs in our region – Art Basel Hong Kong in March followed by the Auckland Art Fair in May of this year. The Melbourne Art Fair concluded as this catalogue went to press and coming down the wire is Sydney Contemporary in mid September. In June I visited Art Basel in Switzerland – regarded in the art world as both the biggest and most important of all the global art fairs. It is a daunting undertaking as the footprint of the fair is massive with 290 international galleries in attendance and over 90 000 visitors over five days. Art fairs are the place to go to see the contemporary NOW of current international art practice. At Art Basel the sheer mass of such work can be overwhelming for those used to the more modest scale of such presentations in Australasia. The focus of art fairs is in the main the recent contemporary from Tokyo, Zurich, London, New York, Naples or in the case of Buchholz gallery which featured the work of New Zealander Simon Denny of their gallery stand… Berlin, Cologne and New York.
