In particular we are proud to offer an excellent collection of New Zealand photography from a private collector together with many other interesting consignments. Since returning to the office in May we have completed two auctions that had been on hold since April. Both of these events were remarkably successful and we would like to warmly thank our vendors who remained patient during the lockdown and all those who supported us at the viewings and attended the auctions, whether on-line at home or in person. It is extremely heartening to see that even in the most tumultuous of times, there is still a desire for art in our lives. During the recent lockdown period, like many I agreed with the slogans that suggested we should send 2020 back to where it came from. If only we could rewind and start again! The effect on businesses and families, the many disappointments of cancelled events and travel, will be felt for some time to come. -

EXHIBTION HISTORY 1999 – 2009 Manufacturing Meaning: The University of Wellington Art Collection in Context 22 September 1999 31 January 2000 The inaugural exhibition of the Adam Art Gallery showcased ten key works from the university collection, spanning a period from the 1930s to the present. The works of Frances Hodgkins, John Weeks, Gordon Walters, Colin McCahon, Ralph Hotere, Michael Smither, Jacqueline Fahey, Richard Killeen, John Pule and Peter Peryer were each presented in relation to the artist's practice or ideas and issues raised by the work, and each was accompanied by a catalogue. Manufacturing Meaning offered important new insights into the history of New Zealand art, through the research and presentation of selected critical thinkers curators, art historians, writers and artists Elizabeth Eastmond, Linda Tyler, Damian Skinner/ Ngarino Ellis, Ewen McDonald, Jack Body and David Crossan, Stuart McKenzie, Anna Miles, Greg Burke, Lisa Taouma, and David Maskill. Art + Object Welcome to ART+OBJECT’s first major art sale of 2012. It is appropriate that as the company moves towards its fifth anniversary we are able to showcase a cutting edge collection of contemporary New Zealand and Australian art. Described by Fiona Kidman as a ‘ravishing, immersing read’, A Strange Beautiful Excitement is a ‘wild ride’ through the Wellington of Katherine Mansfield’s childhood. From the grubby, wind-blasted streets of Thorndon to the hushed green valley of Karori, author Redmer Yska, himself raised in Karori, retraces Mansfield’s old ground: the sights, sounds and smells of the rickety colonial capital, as experienced by the budding writer. The Frances Hodgkins Fellowship 2021
THE FRANCES HODGKINS FELLOWSHIP 2021 The Fellowship was established by the University Council in 1962 and was initiated by the generous interest of anonymous friends of the University. The general purpose of the Frances Hodgkins Fellowship Fund is to aid and encourage painters and sculptors in the practice of their art, to associate them with the life of the University, and at the same time to foster an interest in the Arts within the University. CONDITIONS OF AWARD 1. The Fellowship shall be open to any man or woman normally resident in New Zealand who in the opinion of the Selection Committee: (a) has executed sufficient work as a painter or sculptor to show that they are possessed of some talent as such, and (b) is a serious artist who will be diligent in their endeavours to practice, improve and develop such talent, and (c) will benefit from holding of the Fellowship. 2. Applicants for the Fellowship need not possess a degree or diploma or have attained any particular educational standard or be a member of any art society or group of artists or of any other body. 3. Other qualifications and considerations between applicants for the award of the Fellowship being more or less equal, preference may be given to an applicant under the age of forty years. 4. Full time teachers of art shall not be eligible to apply for the Fellowship except in special circumstances of which the Selection Committee shall be the sole judge. 5. The Fellowship shall normally be awarded for a term of one year, but may be awarded for a shorter period. -

ART + OBJECT Important Photographs and Contemporary Art August 10th “…people say Maori didn’t have a written language — it’s not that at all. They did. They did it with their arts.”1 Cliff Whiting, Te Wehenga o Rangi rāua ko Papa, 1975 Collection of the National Library of New Zealand. Welcome to A+O’s winter 2017 Important Photographs and Contemporary Art catalogue. This catalogue features the finest selection of photography we have offered for some years. Alongside our leading New Zealand practitioners we are pleased to be able to offer some seldom seen works by leading international photographers, not the least of which is a superb Ansel Adams image dating to the late 1950s. In mid-July we learnt of the very sad news of the passing of Cliff Whiting (1936 – 2017). Born in Te Kaha on the East Coast and affiliated to the Te Whanau a Apanui iwi, Cliff Whiting was the creator of some of the most spectacular large-scale, carved in-situ installations in New Zealand. Perhaps his greatest work is the carved house Te Hono ki Hawaiki which is the centrepiece of Rongomaraeroa, the Marae of Te Papa Tongarewa. It is without doubt one of the most viewed artworks in New Zealand. Whiting emerged in the 1950s as part of that extraordinary generation of Maori artists who came to prominence as part of the Tovey scheme under the auspices of the Department of Education. Other artist teachers in this group include Ralph Hotere, Para Matchitt, Muru Walters, John Bevan Ford and Sandy Adsett. These artists and their students went on to rewrite New Zealand art history and to bring the unique Maori visual ART + arts language to a much wider New Zealand and, via ground-breaking exhibitions such as Headlands, international audience. -
