  • Beyond the Lens the Marti & Gerrard Friedlander Collection
BEYOND THE LENS THE MARTI & GERRARD FRIEDLANDER COLLECTION Marti Friedlander’s contribution to the development of contemporary New Zealand art has been quite simply outstanding and it is with great honour that we bring you this catalogue, Beyond the Lens - The Marti and Gerrard Friedlander Collection. Celebrated and respected for her photography, but also for her generosity, in later life Marti became known to many of us through the causes that she and Gerrard supported with great passion. Breast cancer, issues of Māoridom and helping young people – all these were causes close to their hearts. Marti was an unforgettable character to those that knew her. Curious and direct, with a distinctive gravelly voice and an accent that gave away her Northern Hemisphere start in life. I was most interested to read Kathlene Fogarty’s account of Driving with Marti, mainly as I had previously assumed that Marti didn’t drive. Having lived and worked in Parnell for years, she was a most familiar figure to locals; striding purposefully up Brighton Road and determinedly around the village, frequently pausing to chat and always stopping for coffee. Known for her strong personality and love of people, Marti’s curiosity for the strange new land she came to with husband Gerrard in 1958 was borne out in the photographs she took. Over the next fifty years she famously photographed not only the landscape but it’s people – both the ordinary and the extraordinary - in a time well before the notion of celebrity existed. Her visual record of our country in a time of change and maturation is invaluable.

SOLICITORS Messrs. WILDING, PERRY & ACLAND FOREWORD a The Annual Autumn Exhibition this year has attracted a greater number of exhibitors, with a wider variety of work than in recent years. You will find that many of the paintings re present the more contemporary conception of art. We are anxious to introduce you to the work of these young New Zealand artists, and while you may perhaps find some of them difficult to follow, we think you will find many of them exciting, colourful, and vigorous. During the last hundred years, the great French painters Cezanne, Gauguin, Renoir, and later the English painters and sculptors Sutherland, Nash, and Henry Moore, to mention a few, have broken away from the traditional methods of ex pression, and the work of artists has become more individual.

  • Embodied Pedagogy: Examples of Moral Practice from Art Education
EMBODIED PEDAGOGY: EXAMPLES OF MORAL PRACTICE FROM ART EDUCATION Ruth Boyask University of Canterbury, New Zealand Educators operate today in a climate that favours instrumental means to achieve economically rational ends. This emphasis conflicts with the moral purpose of education, which is concerned ostensibly with widening participation and increasing personal liberty. Framed by this potential conflict is an investigation into the activity of historical figures in New Zealand art education to reveal how their deliberate activities negotiated the dominant discourses of their times, and how they shifted cultural production and understandings towards divergent social ends. These historical cases provide insight into possibilities for contemporary educators. Teaching and learning occur both within and outside of educational institutions, policies and sectors. Whilst this premise may not appear particularly innovative or surprising, taken seriously it has the potential to destabilise existing orders of educational practice. It indicates that the creation of knowledge as it is experienced does not necessarily conform to generalised policies nor does it occur within the formal institutions and educational sectors that we have constructed for its legitimation and continuance. However, this premise conflicts with basic assumptions operating currently within the discipline of education, where educational knowledge is positioned in relation to specific and discrete epistemological constructions. This article is developed from a fundamentally phenomenological position, whereby social discourses are constructed through embodied interaction and dialogue, resulting in social practices such as pedagogy, which are ritualised and re-enacted throughout our institutions. The discussion claims that pedagogies have moral implications in that they expand or inhibit social participation and personal liberty, and therefore they encourage educators, when determining a course of action, to deliberate on how their practices intersect with educational structures.

  • S Waistcoat and Other Duchampian Traces
Attracting Dust in New Zealand Lost And Found: Betty’s Waistcoat and Other Duchampian Traces In 1983, three works by Marcel Duchamp found their way into the collection of the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa (Te Papa, Wellington, New Zealand). The following account demonstrates how two New York-based friends of Duchamp, Judge Julius Isaacs, and Betty Isaacs (Fig. 1) are tied to this course of events. click to enlarge Figure 1 Betty Isaacs and Julius Isaacs, Wellington New Zealand, 1966. Copyright Fairfax NZ Ltd. Courtesy Dominion Post and Te Papa Museum Moreover this essay exposes how this process, despite the diligence of Duchamp scholarship, led to the virtual disappearance of these works from the record. This essay will also draw (preliminary) conclusions about the significance of this process, both in terms of the new light shed on the fate of Duchamp’s work, and of the reception of this work outside the centers of art practice.(1) These works are the BETTY waistcoat (1961, New York), The Box in a Valise, (Edition D. 1961, Paris) and The Chess Players (copperplate etching, artist’s proof, 1965, New York). In addition, five 1st edition publications on Marcel Duchamp signed with personal dedications accompany the works.(2) All these form part of the bequest of Judge Julius Isaacs to the National Art Gallery of New Zealand (NAG) in 1983. The Duchamp works are the most important items in a gift of over 200 artworks, publications, and articles donated to the museum by the estate of Mrs. Betty and Judge Julius Isaacs, who were New York-based friends of Marcel Duchamp.

S Melvin circa 1880 Lake Manapouri Initialled Lower left ‘ WSM’ Oil on opaque glass 170 x 280 mm These two works by W.S Melvin exemplify the decorative landscape painting of nineteenth century painters of the period working in New Zealand. They knowingly utilise the decorative strength of adjacent reds , soft purples and greens . Painted on what was commonly called ‘milk glass’, popular in nineteenth century applied arts, here Melvin employs this luminous medium for his deftly realised depictions of the picturesque South Island. W.S. Melvin was a nineteenth century painter who exhibited with the Otago Art Society from 1887–1913; and whose work featured in the NZ and South Seas Exhibition in Dunedin 1889–90.
