The Roots Report: An Interview with Judy Collins Okee dokee folks… The other day I spoke with Judy Collins by phone about her upcoming show with Stephen Stills at the Park Theatre in Cranston on Satursday, October 7th. It took about twenty back and forth phone calls to have a conversation. I called. She called. We were cut off; we couldn’t hear each other. It sounded like a “Can you hear me know?” mobile phone commercial for a bit. Finally we connected and we able to have a short conversation before the phones went wonky again! John Fuzek: Hello? Judy Collins: Oh, I think I have finally gotten through, the phone was not working for a while! So here I am! JF: Hi! thanks for calling back! JC: Hi! JF: How are you? JC: Good! JF: Where are you calling from? JC: On the way somewhere JF: You’re on your way to a gig right now? JC: Of course JF: Where are you playing tonight? JC: I don’t know…but let’s talk, shall we? JF: So, how was this tour put together? JC: Well, let’s see…first of all, we have been talking about if for a couple of years and finally we found the time to do it, so that is how it was put together, by GENIUSES!… (phone cuts out again…) JF: Hello?… Hello? Dave Hartl’s 2014 Top Ten (or so) Most Influential Albums Another year slips by and I’m still listening to a lot of music. But for the first time in many years I’m looking backwards. The best bumper sticker of the year? “It’s not that I’m old… your music really does suck.” What is new amongst this year’s offerings is still rooted in the past, deeply. But inspiration is to be found, nonetheless. As always, here’s the Top 10 musical things that influenced me the most this year. John Coltrane: Offering: Live at Temple University Back in 1966, Temple University Radio WRTI was on the edge of the black free jazz scene as well as everything else that was happening (as opposed to its current conservative stance on music). John Coltrane’s concert at Temple in November that year was taped by WRTI and has lain dormant, becoming the stuff of legend in its real absence. The teenage Michael Brecker who witnessed the event decided that night to become a tenor sax player, much to the world’s benefit. The reports of Coltrane beating on his chest and bellowing like a wounded animal gave credence to the viewpoint that the far-out explorations he undertook in the last 2 years of his life, driving his famous quartet out of the picture, were the symptoms of madness, pain, or possible LSD experimentation.

They are known as Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (CSNY) when joined by occasional fourth member Neil Young. They are noted for their intricate vocal harmonies, often tumultuous interpersonal relationships, political activism, and lasting influence on US music and culture. All four members of CSNY have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, though Young's inductions were for work not involving the group. History Formation Prior to the formation of CSN, each member of the band had belonged to another prominent group. David Crosby played guitar, sang and wrote songs with the Byrds; Stephen Stills had been a guitarist, keyboardist, vocalist and songwriter in the band Buffalo Springfield (which also featured Neil Young); and Graham Nash had been a guitarist, singer and songwriter with the Hollies.
