NEWS RELEASE for Immediate Release Ministry of Education 2016EDUC0296-002725 Dec NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release Ministry of Education 2016EDUC0296-002725 Dec. 16, 2016 Surrey students tapped for career and skills-training development SURREY ʹStudents in the Surrey School District are connecting with skills and technology training development thanks to a $17,500 grant to the district from the Province͛s Shoulder Tappers Program. Surrey-Tynehead MLA Amrik Virk, Surrey-Cloverdale MLA Stephanie Cadieux, Surrey-Fleetwood MLA Peter Fassbender, and Surrey-Panorama MLA Marvin Hunt announced this today on behalf of Education Minister Mike Bernier. Students are receiving the supports, skills, and experiences they need for the jobs of tomorrow from the help of shoulder tappers͸career co- ordinators and recruitment specialists. These mentors are connecting students with innovative workshops and on-the-job opportunities in skilled-trades and technology careers, encouraging them with positive input and advice, and cultivating their passions. All 33 districts that applied met the requirements and received the 2016/17 grant. Twelve districts receive funding for similar programs under the Northern Development Initiative Trust and a further eight receive funding from the ministry as part of the Northern Opportunities Partnership or the South Island Partnership. The Shoulder Tappers Program supports B.C.'s Skills for Jobs Blueprint, which is re-engineering the province͛s education and apprenticeship system so training dollars and programs are targeted to in-demand jobs. It also supports the #BCTECH Strategy͸a key component of the BC Jobs Plan to support the growth of B.C.͛s vibrant technology sector and strengthen British Columbia͛s diverse innovation economy. Quotes: Amrik Virk, MLA for Surrey-Tynehead ʹ ͞British Columbia is on the fast track to becoming a world leader in technology and we need a workforce who can maintain this momentum. Our Skills for Jobs Blueprint is helping students who are interested in high-demand sectors, like technology, gain the skills they need to become that workforce through programs like Shoulder Tappers.͟ Stephanie Cadieux, MLA for Surrey-Cloverdale ʹ ͞Surrey has the highest concentration of young people of any city in our province and shoulder tappers is exactly the type of program they need to guide them toward success.͟ Peter Fassbender, MLA for Surrey-Fleetwood ʹ ͞It is not always easy match your talents with the right job in the workforce and this program helps B.C.͛s students identify a clear start to their careers.͟ Marvin Hunt, MLA for Surrey-Panorama ʹ ͞By giving our students the tools they need to be successful as soon as they graduate and join the workforce, we are equipping them with a clear advantage over their competitors in the global economy of tomorrow.͟ Learn More: Explore B.C.͛s new curriculum: https://curriculum.gov.bc.ca Read the #BCTECH Strategy: https://bctechstrategy.gov.bc.ca/ Learn more about B.C.͛s Skills for Jobs Blueprint: www.workbc.ca/skills The B.C. government has launched a new parent-engagement process to better understand how parents want to be informed of their student͛s success from kindergarten to Grade 9. MAYOR'S OFFICE: BRITISH FEe 0 9 2017 COLUMBIA VICTORIA;^ February 3, 2017 Her Worship Reference: 261394 Mayor Lisa Helps City of Victoria 1 Centennial Square Victoria BC V8W 1P6 Dear Mayor Helps: Re: Bike Right Provincial Youth Cycling Framework Thank you for sharing your letter of October 7, 2016, addressed to Premier Christy Clark, regarding the ministry's BikeBC program and your support for the Bike Right Provincial Youth Cycling Framework. The ministry is committed to encouraging active lifestyles, and I am pleased that the ministry's BikeBC funding is helping the City of Victoria to provide safer cycling opportunities for residents. BikeBC places a preference on funding high quality, separated facilities, as we have seen that these attract the most users. The new protected cycling corridors in Victoria will no doubt be a welcome addition to the cycling network. Investing in cycling infrastructure is a key priority in B.C. on the Move, our 10-year transportation plan. Last year, the Province announced that it would double BikeBC funding for three years to $18 million, and this year, we increased that amount by an additional $2 million. Through partnerships with local communities, this cost-sharing program will result in over $40 million in cycling infrastructure. Since 2001, over $160 million in BikeBC cost-shared funds have been provided for cycling infrastructure projects throughout the province, and we will continue to help municipalities expand their cycling networks through this program. B.C. on the Move also calls for: • the widening of shoulders and safety improvements on provincial highways in areas with high volumes of cyclists; • a doubling of the frequency of sweeping on main cycling corridors; and, • a Cycling Tourism Signage and Marketing Strategy to promote B.C.'s beautiful cycling routes.

June 3rd, 2016 Honourable Rich Coleman Deputy Premier, Minister of Natural Gas Development And Minister Responsible for Housing Government of British Columbia By email to: [email protected] Re: Climate Leadership Plan Submission Dear Minister Coleman, This letter is in follow-up to the Building Owners and Managers Association of British Columbia (BOMA BC)’s original submission on April 8th 2016 for the Climate BUILDING Leadership Action Plan consultation and includes additional documentation. OWNERS AND MANAGERS BOMA BC represents the interests of the commercial real estate industry. Our ASSOCIATION members own and/or manage the majority of British Columbia’s commercial real British Columbia estate space including office, retail and light industrial. Incorporated since 1911, BOMA speaks on behalf of an industry consisting of over 300 million square feet of floor space that supports our working public. Suite 556 409 Granville Street BOMA supports the Province’s carbon reduction objectives and targets. With federal, Vancouver, BC provincial and utility support for reducing carbon emissions in the built environment V6C 1T2 reportedly focused on public sector buildings, we feel it is also critical to support the Class B and C private sector buildings that provide the working space for small to TELEPHONE medium sized businesses. Our older building stock is typically lower performing (604) 684-3916 buildings whose owners or managers are more resource constrained and have FASCIMILE generally had to cope without access to utility incentives. (604) 684-4876 WEBSITE BOMA is prepared to work closely with the Province to reach and motivate this www.boma.bc.ca segment of the industry who will especially feel the effects of a carbon tax increase.
