Nights Underground in Darkest London: The Blitz, 1940–1941 Geoffrey Field Purchase College, SUNY After the tragic events of September 11, Mayor Rudolph Giuliani at once saw parallels in the London Blitz, the German air campaign launched against the British capital between September 1940 and May 1941. In the early press con- ferences at Ground Zero he repeatedly compared the bravery and resourceful- ness of New Yorkers and Londoners, their heightened sense of community forged by danger, and the surge of patriotism as a town and its population came to symbolize a nation embattled. His words had immediate resonance, despite vast differences between the two situations. One reason for the Mayor’s turn of mind was explicit: he happened at that moment to be reading John Lukacs’ Five Days in London, although the book examines the British Cabinet’s response to the German invasion of France some months before bombing of the city got un- derway. Without doubt Tony Blair’s outspoken support for the United States and his swift (and solitary) endorsement of joint military action also reinforced this mental coupling of London and New York. But the historical parallel, however imperfect, seemed to have deeper appeal. Soon after George W. Bush was telling visitors of his admiration for Winston Churchill, his speeches began to emulate Churchillian cadences, Karl Rove hung a poster of Churchill in the Old Execu- tive Office Building, and the Oval Office sported a bronze bust of the Prime Min- ister, loaned by British government.1 Clearly Churchill, a leader locked in conflict with a fascist and a fanatic, was the man for this season, someone whom all political parties could invoke and quote, someone who endured and won in the end. -

London Assembly MQT – 12 October 2011 Thirty-fourth Mayor’s Report to the Assembly This is my thirty-fourth report to the Assembly, fulfilling my duty under Section 45 of the Greater London Authority Act 1999. It covers the period 1 September to 28 September 2011. Executive Summary Bernard Hogan-Howe appointed as the new Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police. On 12 September, after interviewing the final four candidates with the Home Secretary, Bernard Hogan-Howe was appointed the new Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police. Londoners deserve strong and dynamic leadership at the helm of the country’s largest and most industrious police force, and I’m pleased to welcome the appointment of Bernard as the man who will deliver the firm, strategic lead our great city needs. Improving the Management of Disruptive Roadworks On 21 September, I announced a new onslaught on disruptive roadworks on London's streets by asking Londoners to "name and shame" those companies who blight London with disruptive or neglected roadworks, causing hours of unnecessary frustration to journeys every day. I urged Londoners to use a new reporting system to tell Transport for London (TfL) when roadworks are not up to scratch so they can take action with the relevant organisations and get things moving again. To help Londoners report disruptive or badly managed roadworks, TfL and I have updated the 'Reportit' system on the TfL website, to allow people to identify and report issues quicker. By visiting www.tfl.gov.uk/roadworks, or by tweeting @report_it with the hashtag #roadworks, complaints can be sent directly to the highway authority responsible, ensuring that direct and swift action can be taken. -

Thus, a designer should carefully consider drawing viewers’ attention to important 7 information and reducing viewers’ attentional load on unimportant information. 8 Web designers recently tend to present all the information on a long page, and the 9 viewers need to scroll down to see different blocks of information. This new trend is probably 10 due to frequent mobile device use in our daily life, and we become more familiar with scrolling. 11 A critical piece of information on this type of webpage is to notify people to scroll down. 12 Otherwise, this design would be a complete failure. To successfully deliver this message, 13 designers can use preattentive features, such as motion, to draw people’s attention. For example, 14 on Google Drive’s webpage, the down arrow at the bottom of page informs people to scroll 15 down. Although the color makes the down arrow to stand out from the background, the 16 additional movement of the arrow is the key factor that draws people’s attention. Graves of Artists and Architects Buried There
Graves of architects and artists in the Chiswick Churchyard and Old Burial Ground A noteworthy feature of the burial ground associated with St Nicholas, Chiswick, is the remarkable number of graves of artists and architects buried there. This article records the graves of an important eighteenth-century architect and garden designer, a respected bricklayer and site manager, two well-regarded Victorian sculptors, and no fewer than six painters and printmakers. In comparison, I know of only one literary figure who was buried there: the maverick Italian poet and patriot, Ugo Foscolo (1778–1827). But perhaps he does not count, since his bones were exhumed in 1871 and returned to Italy for re-burial in Sta Croce, Florence. The churchyard harbours the tomb of only one theatrical figure, Charles Holland (1733–1769), but – as far as I am aware – of not one single composer. Two possible reasons for this bias in favour of the visual arts may be connected with two leading figures in the British eighteenth-century art world who were associated with St Nicholas, Chiswick. Lord Burlington (1694–1753) and William Hogarth (1697–1764) were close contemporaries, although they seldom if ever saw eye to eye. Lord Burlington was the architect of his ground- breaking Chiswick Villa, and he was also a celebrated aesthete and connoisseur. During highly profitable visits to Italy in the second decade, he amassed an important collection of Italian Renaissance and Baroque paintings. Chiswick Villa was designed in part specifically to display this collection, which enhanced Burlington’s status in the British art scene. His semi-permanent residence at Chiswick in the last 20 or so years of his life, and the inheritance of his estate by the Dukes of Devonshire from 1764, perhaps attracted other artists to the area, seeking aristocratic and royal patronage. -
