Travels in America: Aelred Carlyle, His American “Allies,” and Anglican Benedictine Monasticism Rene Kollar Saint Vincent Archabbey, Latrobe, Pennsylvania N FEBRUARY 1913, Abbot Aelred Carlyle and a majority of the Benedictine monks of Caldey Island, South Wales, renounced the Anglican Church and converted to I Roman Catholicism.1 For years, the Caldey Island monastery had been a show piece of Anglo-Catholicism and a testimony to the catholic heritage of the Anglican Church, but when Charles Gore, the Bishop of Oxford, tried to regularize their status within Anglicanism by forcing Carlyle and the monks to agree to a series of demands which would radically alter their High Church liturgy and devotions, the monks voted to join the Church of Rome. The demands of the Great War, however, strained the fragile finances of the island monastery, and during the spring of 1918, Abbot Carlyle traveled to America to solicit funds for his monastery. “And it was indeed sheer necessity that took me away from the quiet shores of Caldey,” he told the readers of Pax, the community’s magazine, but “Caldey has suffered grievously through the war.”2 Abbot Carlyle saw a possible solution to his problems. “In our need we turned to our Catholic Allies in the United States, and my duty seemed obvious that I should accept the invitation I had received to go to New York to plead in person the cause of Caldey there.” Carlyle had not forgotten lessons from the past. During his years as an Anglican monk, the American connection proved to be an important asset in the realization of his monastic dreams. -

Turn right onto ‘Swan Street’ and keep walking straight along it for about 0.9 miles (1.5 km) (at the beginning you can see West Malling abbey with a very nice waterfall on the right and later you will walk under railway and road bridge). Behind the bridges you can walk along a small pavement on the left side of the road (1) until the first crossroad. Turn right onto ‘Broadwater Road’ and follow this road (2) for about 0.9 miles (1.5km) until a crossroad with a track (3) (the crossroad is just behind ‘Quiet Lane’ post on the right). Turn right onto the track and carry on along it into the orchard (4). -

Homo Eucharisticus: Dom Gregory Dix – Reshaped David John Fuller, B Sc, B Th Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Theology and Religious Studies University of Glasgow December 2013 Copyright © David Fuller, 2013 Homo Eucharisticus: Dom Gregory Dix – Reshaped 2 ABSTRACT In his book The Shape of the Liturgy Dom Gregory Dix coined the phrase ‘Eucharistic man’. In a speech to clergy Archbishop Rowan Williams remarked that Homo Eucharisticus, his Latinised version of Dix’s words, was, ‘a new human species who makes sense of the world in the presence of the risen Jesus at his table’. This thesis will seek to define what is specifically meant by the term Homo Eucharisticus and to indicate that, in a very real sense, Dix is Homo Eucharisticus, understood in his life, vocation, and his primary scholarship as it is centred on The Shape of the Liturgy. I shall demonstrate that Dix’s theology was Incarnational and that his Trinitarian understanding was based on the precept of a ‘Spiritual-Logos’. I shall examine these concepts in the context of Dix’s experience and personality. I shall assess the historical, intellectual and theological influences that helped to shape his life and vocation, and explore his Anglican identity as a priest, a scholar and a member of a religious community. I shall explain Dix’s creative understanding of the Trinitarian nature of the Eucharist and determine that he was a noteworthy theologian of major significance. I shall include studies of his writings on the Ministry of the Church and his major liturgical works The Apostolic Tradition of Saint Hippolytus and The Shape of the Liturgy. -

The Benedictine Spirit in Anglicanism by Robert Hale, O.S.B. It is impossible to set precise limits to the extension, influence and expressions of the Benedictine spirit. Benedictinism, as the abbots themselves have acknowledged, has expressed itself in 'great diversity ... in a wide variety of forms.' St John's Collegeville is quite different from New Camaldoli which differs notably from Mount Saviour, etc. Yet all these communities are Benedictine, at least in the fundamental sense that they all seek to follow the Rule, which in its flexibility and 'indetermination offers the possibility of many adaptations.' And in the broader sense of the spirit of the Rule, one can argue that the Benedictine ethos extends quite beyond cloister limits to inspire a variety of forms of Christian living. The Anglican spiritual theologian Martin Thornton, for instance, insists that 'the genius of St Benedict cannot be confined within the walls of Monte Cassino or any other monastery; the Regula is not only a system of monastic order, it is a system of ascetical theology, the basis of which is as applicable to modern England as it was to sixth century Italy.' Can the Benedictine spirit even inspire and characterize a Church as such, In deed an entire communion of Churches? Several Anglican theologians respond affirmatively in reference to their own Communion. This article proposes to examine this thesis and to offer some Roman Catholic reflections about its ecumenical implications in general and some Benedictine thoughtsabout its challenge specifically to the Benedictine world. A Church of Continuities Most Roman Catholics probably still think of the Anglican Church (in the United States known as the Episcopal Church) as arising in the sixteenth century and as a direct consequence of certain marital problems of Henry VIII. -

I A SPIRITUAL ADVENTURE (for the 38th Annual Symposium at Buckfast 4/4/2013) I was asked to talk about the early history of my Community at Prinknash, and with special reference to Abbot Aelred Carlyle who founded it. It is now a very appropriate time; because our Community has been going 117 years since 1896 and Aelred died very near the middle in 1955. So the Community existed for 59 years during his life time and has continued another 58 years since his death. I have called the talk “A Spiritual Adventure” because that was the title Aelred gave to an autobiography he never wrote1. I am trying to do it for him in 45 minutes. I propose to discuss the matter in three sections, covering three different aspects: (i) the things Aelred did that influenced the Community (ii) the things he did that did not influence the Community (iii) the things that the Community did irrespective of Aelred. I. THE THINGS AELRED DID THAT INFLUENCED THE COMMUNITY The Community was Aelred’s invention. Bom and baptised Benjamin Feamley Carlyle in 1874 he was an Anglican medical student at Barts in 1896 with Anglo-Catholic tendencies2 and out of his own head he got the idea of setting up a Benedictine Community3 in the East End of London. Individual Anglicans had been relatively successful in setting up Religious Orders in the latter half of the 19th century especially for women. But in the last decade of the century, founding communities was becoming a part of pastoral strategy in the Church of England. -

UnEnglish and Unmanly: Anglo-Catholicism and Homosexuality By David Hilliard ESPITE THE TRADITIONAL teaching of the Christian Church that homosexual behaviour is always sinful, there are grounds for believing Dthat Anglo-Catholic religion within the Church of England has offered emotional and aesthetic satisfactions that have been particularly attractive to members of a stigmatised sexual minority. This apparent connection between Anglo-Catholicism and the male homosexual subculture in the English-speaking world has often been remarked upon, but it has never been fully explored. In 1960, for example, in a pioneering study of male homosexuality in Britain, Gordon Westwood stated: Some of the contacts maintained that the highest proportion of homosexuals who are regular churchgoers favoured the Anglo-Catholic churches. ... It was not possible to confirm that suggestion in this survey, but it is not difficult to understand that the services with impressive ceremony and large choirs are more likely to appeal to homosexuals.1 More recently, in the United States, several former priests of the Episcopal church have described some of the links between homosexual men and Catholic forms of religion, on the basis of their own knowledge of Anglo-Catholic parishes.2 This essay brings together some of the historical evidence of the ways in which a homosexual sensibility has expressed itself within Anglo-Catholicism. Because of the fragmentary and ambiguous nature of much of this evidence only a tentative outline can be suggested.
