Matthew is the Gospel to the Jewish people about the Kingdom of God and its King. Utilizing a topical rather than a chronological approach, the following outline summarizes Matthew’s Gospel about the King This Gospel is placed first in the New Testament canon because it is the natural bridge between the Old and New Covenants. Matthew’s Gospel is the good news to the Jewish people that all their hopes were fulfilled in Yeshua (Jesus). Matthew’s Gospel was not written simply to chronical events in Jesus’ life, but rather to present the undeniable evidence that Jesus Christ is the promised Savior, the Messiah, the King of kings and Lord of lords. Its focus in on the fulfillment of prophesy detailed in the Jewish Scriptures. It is my opinion that Matthew is the key book in the Bible. When we turn to Matthew, we turn to the book which may well be called the most important single document of the Christian faith, for in it we have the fullest and the most systematic account of the life and the teachings of Jesus. From it we have the Great Commission (28:18-19) to “all nations.” Matthew was the most frequently quoted book by the first two centuries of the early church, and perhaps the most widely read Gospel (or book for that matter) ever! This Gospel is a bridge between two Testaments. Matthew’s Gospel contains two new and transforming ideas: Grace replaced “works and sacrifices” for the forgiveness of sin and a life up to the point of faith, faith in God’s One and only Son, Yeshua. The idea of a “new life,” a life forgiven of all past deeds could be carried and proclaimed anywhere, even to the “ends of the earth.” Once the Holy Spirit came, with its power to transform lives, the Gospel was no longer tied to any one place, not even to any one people, but was ready to travel wherever believers took it. Theme verse: Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. Matthew 5:17 Date written: Before the destruction of the Temple, between AD 60-65. Special features: The Gospel of Matthew is filled with “Messianic” language such as “the don of David” used to refer to the coming Messiah in the Old Testament. Matthew Quotes the Jewish Scriptures 53 times to demonstrate to the reader how Jesus fulfills each prophesy. Matthew contains Five Major Discourses: Most scholars agree that aside from the introduction (Ch. 1–2: Narrative of Jesus' Birth) and conclusion (Ch. 26–28: Narrative of Jesus' Passion, Death, and Resurrection), the body of Matthew's Gospel is structured around five lengthy sermons that Jesus gives to his disciples or to the broader public. • First Discourse: "Sermon on the Mount": Matt 5–7 • Second Discourse: "Missionary Instructions": Matt 10 • Third Discourse: "Collection of Parables": Matt 13 • Fourth Discourse: "Community Instructions": Matt 18 • Fifth Discourse: " The Olivet Discourse or Olivet prophecy": Matt 24 Each Discourse ends with the phrase, “Now when Jesus had finished saying/teaching these things…” Session 2, 9/22/16 Chapter 1 of the Gospel of Matthew Key Question about Chapter 1 for independent study: • How many years had passed between Malachi and the birth of Jesus? • Who was ruling Israel at the time of Jesus’ birth? • What is the significance of Matthew tracing Jesus’ lineage back to Abraham? Matthew opens his Gospel with a genealogy to prove that Jesus is the descendant of both King David and Abraham, just as the Old Testament had predicted. Jesus' birth didn't go unnoticed, for both shepherds and wise kings came to worship him. The Jewish people were waiting for the Messiah to appear. Finally, he was born, but the Jews didn't recognize him because they were looking for a different kind of king. 1:11 The exile occurred in 586 B.C. when Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylonia, conquered Judah, destroyed Jerusalem, and took thousands of captives to Babylonia. 1:16 Because Mary was a virgin when she became pregnant, Matthew lists Joseph only as the husband of Mary, not the father of Jesus. Matthew's genealogy gives Jesus' legal (or royal) lineage through Joseph. Mary's ancestral line is recorded in Luke 3:23-38. Both Mary and Joseph were direct descendants of David. Matthew traced the genealogy back to Abraham, while Luke traced it back to Adam. Matthew wrote to the Jews, so Jesus was shown as a descendant of their father, Abraham. Luke wrote to the Gentiles, so he emphasized Jesus as the Savior of all people. 1:17 Matthew breaks Israel's history into three sets of 14 generations, but there were probably more generations than those listed here. Genealogies often compressed history, meaning that not every generation of ancestors was specifically listed. Thus the phrase the father of can also be translated "the ancestor of." 1:18 There were three steps in a Jewish marriage. First, the two families agreed to the union. Second, a public announcement was made. At this point, the couple was "pledged." This was similar to engagement today except that their relationship could be broken only through death or divorce (even though sexual relations were not yet permitted). Third, the couple was married and began living together. Because Mary and Joseph were engaged, Mary's apparent unfaithfulness carried a severe social stigma. According to Jewish civil law, Joseph had a right to divorce her, and the Jewish authorities could have had her stoned to death (Deuteronomy 22:23,24). Why is the virgin birth important to the Christian faith? Jesus Christ, God's Son, had to be free from the sinful nature passed on to all other human beings by Adam. Because Jesus was born of a woman, he was a human being; but as the Son of God, Jesus was born without any trace of human sin. Jesus is both fully human and fully divine. Because Jesus lived as a man, we know that he fully understands our experiences and struggles (Hebrews 4:15,16). Because he is God, he has the power and authority to deliver us from sin (Colossians 2:13-15). We can tell Jesus all our thoughts, feelings, and needs. He has been where we are now, and he has the ability to help. 1:18-25 Joseph was faced with a difficult choice after discovering that Mary was pregnant. Although he knew that taking Mary as his wife could be humiliating, Joseph chose to obey the angel's command to marry her. His action revealed four admirable qualities: (1) righteousness (Mat 1:19), (2) discretion and sensitivity (Mat 1:19), (3) responsiveness to God (Mat 1:24), and (4) self-discipline (Mat 1:25). 1:19 Perhaps Joseph thought he had only two options: divorce Mary quietly, or have her stoned. But God had a third option — marry her (Mat 1:20-23). In view of the circumstances, this had not occurred to Joseph. But God often shows us that there are more options available than we think. Although Joseph seemed to be doing the right thing by breaking the engagement, only God's guidance helped him make the best decision. When our decisions affect the lives of others, we must always seek God's wisdom. 1:20 The conception and birth of Jesus Christ are supernatural events beyond human logic or reasoning. Because of this, God sent angels to help certain people understand the significance of what was happening (see Mat 2:13,19; Luke 1:11,26; 2:9). Angels are spiritual beings created by God who help carry out his work on earth. They bring God's messages to people (Luke 1:26), protect God's people (Daniel 6:22), offer encouragement (Genesis 16:7ff), give guidance (Exodus 14:19), carry out punishment (2Samuel 24:16), patrol the earth (Zechariah 1:9-14), and fight the forces of evil (2Kings 6:16-18; Revelation 20:1,2). There are both good and bad angels (Revelation 12:7), but because bad angels are allied with the devil, or Satan, they have considerably less power and authority than good angels. Eventually the main role of angels will be to offer continuous praise to God (Revelation 7:11,12). 1:20-23 The angel declared to Joseph that Mary's child was conceived by the Holy Spirit and would be a son. This reveals an important truth about Jesus — he is both God and human. The infinite, unlimited God took on the limitations of humanity so he could live and die for the salvation of all who would believe in him. 1:21 Jesus means "the LORD saves." Jesus came to earth to save us because we can't save ourselves from sin and its consequences. No matter how good we are, we can't eliminate the sinful nature present in all of us.

    THE KING JAMES VERSION OF THE BIBLE Preface The Bible is God's inspired and infallible Word – it is God's Book. God has given this Book to His people to teach them the Truth that they must believe and the godly life that they must live. Without the Holy Scriptures the believer has no standard of what is the Truth and what is the lie, what is righteous and what is wicked. It is, therefore, imperative that everyone takes great care that the Bible version that he uses, defends, and promotes in the world is a faithful translation of the Word of God. On this point, however, there is much confusion. There are many versions available today and they are all promoted as the best, the most accurate or the easiest to understand. All of them are justified by the supposed inferiority of the King James Version. The truth is quite different. The King James Version, although it is 400 years old, is still the best translation available today. It was translated by men who were both intellectually and spiritually qualified for the work The great version that they produced is faithful to the originals, accurate, incomparable in its style, and easily understood by all those who are serious about knowing God's Word. The King James Version of the Bible is the version to be used in our churches and in our homes.     The First of the First Authorised English Bibles By Ruth Magnusson Davis, B.A., LL.B., Founder of the New Matthew Bible Project Woodcut of the execution of William Tyndale, from John Foxe, Acts & Monuments of the Christian Church n the years 1536-1539, the battle for the Bible was finally won in England. The five soldiers in the front line of this battle were William Tyndale and Myles Coverdale, Bible I translators, their friend John Rogers, Archbishop Thomas Cranmer, and, lastly, Lord Thomas Cromwell, who was then chief minister to King Henry VIII. God placed them all strategically in time, place, and office, so together they could work to bring vernacular Scriptures to the country. Between them, and with Henry’s hard won cooperation, these men took the field with three whole English Bibles: Coverdale’s of 1535, the 1537 Matthew Bible, and the 1539 Great Bible. Historians disagree about which of these Reformation Bibles may justly be called the first authorised English Bible. Some assert firmly that it was the Matthew Bible, 1 but others say only the Great Bible was ever truly authorised. 2 So which was it, and why the confusion? The Matthew Bible In 1537, the Matthew Bible arrived in England, probably from Antwerp where it is believed to have been printed. This Bible contained the combined translations of William Tyndale and Myles Coverdale. Tyndale’s translations comprised the New Testament and first half of the Old, being all he was able to complete before he was imprisoned in 1535. Coverdale supplied Scriptures for the balance of the Old Testament and Apocrypha, except three Apocryphal books that Rogers took from other sources.

    Reformation History 4. The English Bibles By the mid 1530s efforts were underway, led by Archbishop Thomas Cranmer, to petition King Henry VIII for an English translation of the Bible from Greek and Hebrew. The first printing of a complete English Bible came shortly thereafter in 1535 and was the work of Miles Coverdale, who used the New Testament and partial Old Testament translations of William Tyndale. For the remaining parts of the Old Testament he made use of Luther’s Bible. The result was a mess, largely owing to Coverdale’s lack of knowledge of Greek or Hebrew, which left him dependent on these vernacular translations. Nevertheless, Coverdale’s Bible was intended for use in the study of the Word of God by providing chapter summaries, cross-references, and some annotations. Coverdale followed Luther and put the Apocrypha between the Old and New Testaments. Two years later in 1537 the so-called Matthew Bible appeared. It was named for one “Thomas Matthew” who was in fact an alias for the Protestant John Rogers, who assembled the Bible from the work of Tyndale and Coverdale. The use of Tyndale, a condemned heretic, was highly dangerous in Henry’s England. In addition, the Bible was clearly Protestant in character. For those reasons 1500 copies were printed abroad in Antwerp, which was insufficient to satisfy the growing demand in England for a vernacular Bible for the parish churches. Although in the following years numerous figures undertook translations of parts of scripture, the next major moment in the development of the English story was the Great Bible that appeared between 1539 and 1541.

    Is My Bible Reliable? Cornerstone Community Church Winter of 2021 Tony Slavin Lesson 6 (Part 2 of Session 5) H. The Printed Greek New Testament 1. Review By way of review, there are well over 5,000 manuscripts that span the time frame of the 2nd century to the 16th. These manuscripts come from all over the Mediterranean World and have been classified by geographical regions (i.e., Alexandrian, Byzantine, and Western). We have learned that no two of these manuscripts are identical. The textual critic’s job is to practice his/her trade on individual variants to determine which is most likely to be the wording of the original author (e.g., Romans 5:1; exōmen or exomen;(“let us have . .” vs “We have . .”). 2. The Manuscript Situation in the Middle Ages As I mentioned in class last week, starting in the 7th century, the Muslim conquest of North Africa and the Eastern shores of the Mediterranean greatly limited the reproduction of manuscripts from that region. The Western Church’s official language was/became Latin, thus the reason we have over 10,000 manuscripts that are translated from Greek to Latin. The Byzantine Church (which became known as Greek Orthodoxy or Eastern Orthodoxy) continued to use Greek as their lingua franca, thus why thousands of the extant Greek manuscripts are from this region. In the late 4th Century, the Greek and Hebrew Scholar Jerome started his magnum opus translation that became known as the Vulgate. This translation became the official translation of the Western church (i.e., the Roman Catholic Church) all the way up the early 1960s when the 2nd Vatican Council allowed translations to be made from the Greek and Hebrew instead of just the Vulgate.

Englishman William Tyndale (c 1494-1536), servant of the Lord, was a linguist with great knowledge of ancient Greek and Hebrew, Latin, and other languages. 1 He was an accomplished grammarian and a gifted student of the Holy Scriptures. He was also the man chosen by God in the turbulent and painful years of the Reformation to open the Greek New Testament to the world in his native English. In 1526 Tyndale published his first edition of the New Testament, and a significant revision followed in 1534. It was in the 1534 revision that Tyndale was the first to use the word ‘inn’ in Luke’s Gospel where the physician tells us that Joseph and Mary, Mary then ready to give birth to Jesus, were unable to find accommodation when they arrived in Bethlehem for the Roman census: And it fortuned while they were there, her time was come that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her first begotten son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them within in the inn. 2 Modern critics sometimes discredit the choice of ‘inn’ here as an incorrect translation of the Greek. They say it was unlikely that Joseph and Mary would have been looking for accommodation in public lodgings, but would probably have sought a room in the private home of a relative, as was then the custom for weary travellers.

    The 1537 Matthew Bible: More Anglican than Not Ruth Magnusson Davis, founder and editor, New Matthew Bible Project “Like any good Anglican, the Matthew Bible found itself caught between the Roman Catholics and the Puritans .” hen the sixteenth century dawned in England, there were laws prohibiting the translation of the Bible into W English. It was illegal even to own or to read English Scriptures.1 These laws had been passed by Roman Catholic authorities in response to the Bible translations of John Wycliffe in the late fourteenth century, and were zealously enforced. The poor souls who dared to defy them were imprisoned, tortured, and burned at the stake. In the face of this danger and persecution, God moved three A Lollard Prison friends to give us a little-known English Bible, the Matthew Bible (‘MB’), first published in 1537. William Tyndale translated the New Testament and the first half of the Old, while Myles Coverdale contributed the other Scriptures and the Apocryphal books. The third man, John Rogers, compiled their work, added com- mentaries and other features that we will see, and oversaw production. The Matthew Bible is important because, among other things, it is the “real primary version of our English Bible.”2 It formed the base of the Great Bible, which was a minor revision that Coverdale himself performed. From there, it went also into the Geneva, Bishops’, and King James Versions, where it underwent further revisions. But a com- puter study has revealed just how much of Tyndale remains in the KJV: New Testament scholars Jon Nielson and Royal Skousen observed that previous estimates of Tyndale’s contribution to the KJV “have run from a high of up to 90% (Westcott) to a low of 18% (Butterworth)”.
