President’s Report

Firstly, I would like to thank the Kiama Downs Members for the way we have conducted ourselves during this most challenging year.

Whilst the year commenced like most others it soon changed with the Bushfire season December 19 – January 2020. This was soon followed by global pandemic of COVID 19 March 2020. During this time as a club we have supported the community in so many ways and we should all hold our heads high.

Kiama Downs had another successful year with a number of key achievements for the Club:

• Our Club was called out to provide Water support during the Bush Fire emergency, with Steve Strong called upon to lead a response team. • Our Cadets have grown in both development and competition with several medals received from State and Australian levels. • The Financial position of the Club remained strong. • One of our Members Ken Horspool was successful in lobbying the council and obtaining funding to build a carpark opposite the Club. • External Club facilities hiring increased with many local clubs and residents taking advantage of the new and improved facilities. • Community involvement, this year we continued our support and involvement to the community by hosting Australia Day and Christmas activities at the Club. All activities were open to the general public and were well received. • Santa on the Beach was a successful program, not only in raising money for the club but also awareness for our Nippers program and beach safety. • Our Nipper program continued to develop with a major showing at Carnivals and strong results at State, Country and Branch. We were very successful this year at State and Country with Club members medalling. • The Club purchased a new ATV drawing from our Capital. • Club membership continued to grow with a focus of new members becoming Patrolling Members. 6

Patrolling Season 100% of Patrols were compliant for 2019/2020 with a slight increase of patrolling members receiving 100% attendance. Our season was cut short with the last Patrol being on 22nd March 2020 due to COVID 19.

Kiama Downs had 9 rostered Patrols, with several highlights achieved. • 12 Rescues in Patrolling hours • 5 Rescues outside of patrolling hours • 168 Preventions • 100% of rostered patrols attended. • 62% of Patrolling members attended 100% attendance • 8687 beach visitors • 5 beach closures

Junior Development – A strong season for Kiama Downs with number up 44 on the prior year; we did see a major change in their skill base and a wanting to compete at a club level, Sydney Water, Branch, Country, State and a National level.

Senior Competition – Due to Covid 19 our duck team were not able to defend their State title. Five members represented Kiama Downs at Branch and Country Championships, Some good results were achieved at these carnivals.

Nippers

After a couple of years finding our feet and generating interest from parents to be actively involved, it was pleasing to see that numbers grew at Club level. It is important that this strong interest is maintained so that our nippers and parents continue to be active within surf sports.

Registrations at each level:

Under 6 & 7 - 65 Under 8 - 34 Under 9 - 18 Under 10 - 15 Under 11 - 17 Under 12 - 13 Under 13 - 19 Under 14 - 12

This giving a total of 193 junior members.

7

Closing Thanks

Our Members are to be thanked for another very successful year in supporting the community of Kiama Downs and the / Shoalhaven.

Secretary Report

2019/2020 has once again been a very successful and productive season for our Club. The 38th year of patrolling Jones Beach!

Unfortunately, the patrol season finished early and the IRB competition was cancelled due to the pandemic, however, there were a great deal of positives during the season that we should focus on.

The Club’s function area has had a huge facelift and many works are continuing downstairs and plans in place for minor works/tidy up for all aspects of the Club. There has been the updating of the toilets downstairs, the First Aid room is getting works done as well as a training room being organised downstairs and gear being stored more effectively. The front entrance of our Club is work in progress and is looking amazing. Bore water was installed – initiatives put in place to make our Club look good and be energy efficient.

Take a look at the gardens out the front – secret gardeners have been busy; the grassed areas are really looking good and improvements being worked on.

It is a known fact that our Club Captain, Josh Douglas, goes above and beyond his duties spending countless hours at the Club. With Covid 19 affecting all of us, he has put the many important safety measures in place at the Club and spent a lot of time cleaning to abide by the rules.

I shouldn’t mention names in a report with fear of forgetting something important someone has done. I must say though I couldn’t have done the Secretary role without the amazing support from the Club Executive. They are amazing people and truly have Surf Life Saving and community spirit in their blood. Thank you! The Club is thriving with your leadership. Special thanks to Jan Horspool whose administrative knowledge is amazing – hence you will see she is in running for State Administrator of the Year. So worthy! Not only administrative prowess but gardening and cleaning too!

Thank you to the Management Committee for all your hard work throughout the season! I know there is a great deal of effort put into all areas to make our Club a success. Those who organised and worked to make the Santa Selfies on the Beach such a success are to be commended. It is such a fun and well received event by the local community! Halloween, Cocktail party, Sundays @ The Surfie, Christmas party, Australia Day – these events were run so well and enjoyed by all! Thank you to those who worked on these fun events and to our volunteer bar staff!

Kiama Downs has had a long history of success in IRB competition and as with a majority of sports, it was sad to see this sport cancelled.

9

The IRB team continued training when they could and were ready to defend their titles. Good luck next season!

Our nippers are thriving! The future of our Club! Participation is the key and it is so good to see the strength we have with our junior parents and water safety supporting our kids.

Congratulations and thank you to all members who worked hard to make this last season a successful one.

The 1st of July 2020 marked 40 years of women's involvement in active surf lifesaving duties. This is an important milestone and a cause for reflection on the achievements of female lifesavers in our Club and across the country. Lifesaving has been such a huge part of my family’s life, especially for my daughters who became strong young women and capable leaders through their journeys with our Club.

I wish everyone well during these challenging times and do look forward to seeing you at the beach!

Noelene Sinclair Secretary

Treasurer Report

At the start of the financial year we had forecasted a negative budget of $45,240. This amount included funding to complete the renovations started in the 2018/2019 financial year, the purchase of a new ATV and the refit of a trailer. Due to these projected expenses we agreed as a club to increase membership fees from $80 to $100 for a family and a $10 increase for each of the Nipper categories. Patrolling membership fees remained unchanged.

Once again, our Club raised substantial funds through water safety at Triathlons and Santa Selfies. The impact of COVID 19 on our income was substantial. Hall hire and consequently Bar takings were greatly reduced.

However expenses also reduced. Anticipated competition entry fees reduced from the projected $12,000 to $4,000 due to the cancellation of the IRB competition. A Government grant of $5,000 for Beach Safety Equipment reduced the overall expense of the new ATV to $11,472 – we had projected a spend of $20,000.

The Executive decided to take advantage of the “down time” for hall usage and commenced the building of our training room, tiling of the stairwell and purchase new doors for the bar. All these expenses were paid for within the 2019-2020 financial year.

Consequently, the projected deficit budget of $45,240 reduced to a deficit of $37,888. These funds were taken from savings. At the conclusion of the 2019-2020 financial year our combined bank balances, cash on hand by way of floats and stock on hand, both bar and uniform total $167,041.

Our main sources of income were:

Bar Takings $15,121 Triathlons $15,000 Membership $12,715 Hall Hire $9,708 Santa Photos $5,364

We have also been very fortunate in receiving generous donations from Surf Life Saving, Community organisations and individuals. The major cash donors are listed below. Surf Life NSW $6,100 Kiama Lions $1,250 Stuart Fox Foundation $1,000 Touch $500 IGA – Kiama Downs $695

This has certainly been a year of many challenges and I am proud to have been associated with a club which demonstrated resilience in handling all catastrophic events thrown at it.

Club Captain Report

Our patrols were kept busy with over 8500 beach users recorded by our patrols during patrol times on our beach. No drownings occurred in our area of patrol within the season. There were several great rescues performed throughout the season which is good to see that we are ever vigilant for the public.

We were able to provide 9 patrols this season on our beach along with our RWC Support Service. The 9th patrol was possible due to some members undergoing extra training, a few members from our neighbouring club and some new family members. This allowed the average number of patrols per patrol to drop from 9 to 7 patrols per season.

A big thankyou to the Patrol Captains who put in the extra effort and have the pressure of running the beach and dealing with the public. These people are needed to ensure that we keep our beaches safe and keep up the surf motto of ‘Vigilance and Service’. They encourage our patrol members and guide them whilst on patrol. The skills that they possess are an asset to the Club.

Kiama Downs has a long history as being a leading club in Lifesaving, and this year was no different. The bush fires once again threaten life in the southern areas of our Branch and as we have done 3 times before we sent crews down to assist with potential evacuations. Well done to those that offered their time, which is above what is required as a beach lifesaver.

The Club’s members are always our most valuable assets and it is great to see that our numbers are slowly rising. The members that encourage their family and friends to join, serve a great purpose and our trainers that put in their time and effort to educate these new members are immeasurable to the value that they add to the Club.

We once again extended our patrolling duties by initiating roving patrols at the on the outgoing tides during the Christmas period. The activity has proven to be a great success over the past few seasons and we always try to make it better as the season go on.

The season was cut short due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. This meant that patrols ended on 22nd March 2020. Our RWC service patrolled the remaining weekends to ensure that the local beaches were kept safe as people still visited them without the usual patrols.

I look forward to being part of the Club into its next season.

Josh Douglas Club Captain 12

Registrar Report

Registrations ran smoothly again this year. We managed to do the majority of returning members via online registration and payments. New members were generally done manually or assisted in online registrations.

This year we increased our membership fees for the first time in over 10 years. This provided $12,715 to the Club, which was an increase of $4,125 from last year’s total membership fees of $8,590.

64 Families took up the $100 package offering membership to all members of their immediate family, whilst 10 families took advantage of the Governments “Active Kids vouchers” combining their membership with uniform purchases.

Training Officer Report

Training is a key component of the Club and helps to build skills of existing members as well as teaching invaluable life saving techniques to new members. It is a great way to meet people, become involved in the club and is a draw card for new members and a way to retain existing members.

The training year kicked off with a bang, with 10 Bronze and 22 SRC candidates successfully completing their respective awards. This is the largest SRC squad that I have been involved with. Many of the candidates from both Bronze and SRC have signed up for patrols, strengthening the core activity of our club.

In addition to these squads, we also ran training for: • ARTC • First Aid • Radio Operator

A big thankyou to all those who assisted with training / assessing and water safety for all our squads this year.

First Aid Officer Report

The First Aid room has been getting upgrades done over the off season thanks to Josh Douglas.

Some more storage shelves have been installed for easy access to first aid equipment.

Small gaps in the brickwork and doors are being filled to stop the friendly lizards from getting in, and some small upgrades are still being planned for later on in the year.

We are now getting all the first aid gear ready for gear inspection for the start of the season.

Junior Club Captain Report

The 2019/20 cadet program was cut short by natural disasters and then Covid-19. The activities that went ahead were prior to January 23rd. These included three movie nights, an IRB taster, Water safety at four triathlon events and a Sand & Sea festival. The cadets were encouraged to practise their skills by providing water safety at Sunday Nipper sessions.

The number of Cadets attending activities started with reasonable numbers but did drop as the season progressed. There were generally a greater number of girls than boys interested in cadet activities.

On December 21st I ran an IRB taster for cadets, with the help of Skip, Jordan, Sienna, Tim and Sarah. Six cadets came along to the morning’s event. Participants observed a demonstration of IRB racing and then had the opportunity to be a patient and get picked up by the IRB. The six cadets that came along enjoyed the experience. This was a worth-while activity. My thanks to the senior members that helped out.

A few cadets came and volunteered their time to provide water safety at the triathlons. These events are good experiences and also a great opportunity for cadets to give back to the Club.

My thanks to the Club for the support I received as Junior Club Captain and I wish the next JCC good luck in the role.

IRB Captain Report

The 2019/20 season at Kiama Downs SLSC has been another very enjoyable and safe year for patrol operations for the clubs IRB’s and its crews.

Club volunteers again provided skilled IRB operators who continue to provide local residents and visitors to the area a professional rescue response capability, responding to numerous rescues both at Jones Beach and at surrounding beaches and foreshores.

The IRB’s and the club’s crews have again also been used extensively providing water safety support for local sporting events, an important fundraising opportunity for the club.

Unfortunately to date no IRB competition has been run due to the Covid 19 Global Pandemic. The KD IRB team is poised to compete again in a shortened competition season hopefully later in 2020 should the season recommence.

Many thanks are extended to all the IRB crews and patrolling members for the efforts this season and invitation to interested members to join the IRB Racing team for next season when formal competition training commences in early February.

Nathan Foster IRB Captain

IRB Manager Report

Without doubt one of the great things about managing Kiama Downs IRB team is reflecting back on the year that was both from a competition and Life Saving perspective.

Emergency response – bushfires

2019 ended in a crazy way with bushfires in December and January. Our Club had many members respond to the call for assistance and I was fortunate to be involved in these operations. We were based around both the Sussex Inlet and Sanctuary Point areas to assist with evacuations and first aid as required.

I would like to extend a huge thank you to all our members who responded. The way you all operated in difficult and nerve-wracking times, your performance was nothing but professional.

I would also like to thank the Sanctuary Point community who went above and beyond to ensure we had everything we needed, from coffee to ice creams to chairs and offers of accommodation and access to the local service station for fuel 24 hours a day if required. The support definitely made us feel a part of the community and was greatly appreciated.

20 – 21 December Team, Sussex Inlet and Sanctuary Point

• Aidan Hazell • Bob Willetts • Rod Parker • Jake Cleal Cook • Steve Strong • Josh Douglas

3 – 5 January Team – Sanctuary Point

• Bob Sinclair • Bob Willets • Scott Case • Steve Guy • Steve Strong

Competition

Competition for 2020 was delayed and has now been cancelled with the flare up of Covid-19 in Victoria and issues developing in NSW. The NSWSLS Surf Sports team made the difficult decision to suspend the season to prevent possible health issues with Officials and Competitors.

On the positive side this means Kiama Downs SLSC are the reigning champions in the following:

• NSW Sharkskin IRB Premiership • NSW Sharkskin State IRB Championships • Australian Masters IRB Championships

We also had 9 members selected in a 20 person NSW squad at the 2019 SLS Interbranch IRB Championships where we finished 2nd overall.

• 4 members of the team were selected on the NSW state representative team (Kathy Foster, Kirsty Honey, Rhianna Kevill and Aidan Hazell)

From the South Coast awards Kiama Downs has finalists in 6 categories at the Surf Life Saving NSW awards of excellence which will be broadcast on Facebook and YouTube on the 29th of August. This is the most finalists Kiama Downs have ever had at the state awards, best of luck to all our State Finalists. Make sure you tune in and cheer on all of our finalists on the 29 August.

Looking forward to getting back on the beach and the season ahead.

Safety Officer Report

There were no significant injuries or incidents reported to the Safety Officer this year, in a season that held many challenges for our Club. Several Club Members did a fantastic job in safely responding to calls for assistance during the Bushfire crisis, and the Executive has responded quickly and effectively to the emerging COVID-19 situation and has been proactive in managing associated risks to our Members.

Jillian Noad Safety Officer

27

Hall Hire Report

The Hall has had major upgrades this season. New glass sliding doors replaced the existing glass panels and doors, the old carpet was replaced, all walls and trims painted, a new sound reduction ceiling and sound system, complete with projector.

It has completely changed the look of the Club and the reaction to people that saw it was surprise at how well presented the clubhouse is with these upgrades.

It has allowed for increased revenue for the Club as word spread about the changes. It will continue this for many years without need for major change or maintenance.

Function hiring became hard after March but that brought new challenges to the management. The 1 person for every 4m2 rule reduced numbers for hiring from 100 people down to 32 inside the hall and 28 on the deck area. We still managed to hold functions with our COVID Safety Officers ensuring the rules are followed.

Josh Douglas Hall Hire Manager

28

Bar Manager Report

The bar was once again well used through the year, by members and people hiring the hall. It does not run itself, so thanks to all the people that assist by serving, picking up glasses and bottles, purchasing stock, stocking the fridges and the general cleaning up.

The bar is always a place that people can sit and enjoy the club and the view. I look forward to a drink and a chat with all our members and guests in the future.

Josh Douglas Bar Manager
