There are strong concerns that without effective planning and action now to address this issue, the projected expansion in the passenger and freight movement task over the next 20 years will see the transport and logistics costs for business increase significantly.

LGA Overview Kiama Local Government Area The Municipality of Kiama is located in the Illawarra Region of New South Wales, about 120 kilometres south of Sydney. The Municipality of Kiama is bounded by Shellharbour City in the north, the Tasman Sea in the east, Shoalhaven City in the south and Wingecarribee Shire in the west. The Kiama Municipality is a predominantly rural area with urban townships along the coast. The main towns and villages are Kiama, Kiama Heights, Gerringong, Gerroa, Kiama Downs and Jamberoo. The Municipality encompasses a total land area of 259 square kilometres, including national parks, beaches, rivers and rainforests. Rural land is used mainly for dairy farming and cattle grazing, with some vineyard activity. Also. Basalt mining is carried out at Bombo. The original inhabitants of the Kiama area were the Wodi Wodi Aboriginal people. European settlement of the area dates from 1814, with land used mainly for timber-getting, farming and quarrying. The township of Kiama was established in the 1830s, developing as a shipping and servicing centre for the local industries. Growth took place in the 1880s and 1890s, spurred by the construction of the railway line and improved access. Expansion continued in the interwar period, with the coastal area becoming a popular holiday retreat.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE MOUNT KEIRA TRAMLINE 1839 The Rev W B Clarke, who was a qualified geologist, recorded a finding of coal at Mount Keira. 1848 James Shoobert, a retired sea captain and land-owner, drove a tunnel in what is now known as the No. 3 seam. He then observed an outcrop of the No. 2 (4-ft) seam about 21 metres above it, in which the coal was of better quality. 1849 Shoobert then opened a tunnel in the 4-ft seam, which seems to have been on the north side of Para Creek. A track was then cut through the bush to the Mount Keira Road where a depot was established about 400 metres west of the crossroads forming the junction with the main south road. The track and the crossroads both appear on Plan A (page 85), an 1855 proposal to supply Wollongong with water. The first load of coal was taken from this depot to Wollongong Harbour, with much fanfare, on August 27. The coal was delivered from the mine to the depot by bullock drays and dumped there. It was then loaded onto horse-drawn drays and taken to the harbour, where it was bagged and carried on board the waiting vessel, the paddle steamer William the Fourth, and tipped into its hold.     A Cameo of Captain Thomas Rowley 2 INTRODUCTION 0.01 The recent gift to my wife of a cameo brooch, said to have been a present from Captain Thomas Rowley to his bride, led to my making enquiries about my wife's great great great grandfather.
