Q: Can I free camp in the Kiama area? A: Very good question. While there are no free camping facilities in Kiama town itself (great holiday parks though!), in Jamberoo campervans can park alongside the creek near Kevin Walsh Oval. It’s a nice spot – bring your skateboard.

Q: You mentioned great holiday parks? A: Yes, you’ll find these at Surf, Kendalls and Easts Beach, as well as Werri Beach in Gerringong and alongside Crooked River at Gerroa. Top notch – family friendly, couples friendly, human friendly.

Q: And other accommodation options? A: Take your pick – from motels, hotels and resorts through to BnBs, holiday homes to hire or even the corner of someone’s garage on Airbnb.

Q: Which is furthest north? or Kiama? Q: Is Minnamurra Rainforest in Minnamurra? A: Hmm... it's close, but Kiama is slightly more north. A: It’s actually west of Jamberoo (easily signposted from there) Fun fact: we're also exactly the same latitude as at the start of the Minnamurra River, and not in the village of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Minnamurra, which is where the river meets the sea. Q: Should I tell my friends how great the Kiama area is? Q: Does Kiama have a railway station? A: Hmmm, another tricky one. 1 MINNAMURRA RAINFOREST ()

Follow Tourist Drive 9 west through Jamberoo to find this rare remnant of subtropical and warm . The Minnamurra Rainforest offers a glimpse of what vast areas of the Illawarra looked like before white settlement in the area. Experience the peace and serenity while viewing lyrebirds, water dragons, ancient fig trees, rock orchids, elkhorns and lush ferns.

Facilities include Visitor Centre and café. Open daily, except Christmas Day, from 9am; gates close at 5pm. NOTE: Park gates are locked at 5pm, last entry 4pm. $12.00 park entry fee per vehicle per day.

RAINFOREST LOOP WALK Time: 45mins Distance: 1.6km Grade: Medium

Explore the diverse range of plant and wildlife species. The first 500m is suitable for assisted wheelchairs.

THE FALLS WALK Time: 1hr Distance: 2.6km Grade: Medium / steep in parts

A continuation on from the ‘Loop Walk’, the 2.6 km (return) ‘Falls Walk’ will lead you safely along the canyon cliff edge to the breathtaking upper Minnamurra Falls. This walk is slightly more challenging than the Rainforest Loop.

2 HODDLES TRACK

Time: 2hrs return Distance: 7km return Grade: Moderate / steep

Park your car at Saddleback Mountain lookout (6 km southwest of Kiama) and follow the green marking posts west, up into the escarpment to Mt Noorinan. This track was originally used to transport produce to Kiama for shipping in the 1800s and at one point stretched all the way west to . Bird watchers should keep an eye out for Crimson Rosellas, Eastern Bristlebirds and the Golden Whistler.

Note: the track is steep in places and can become slippery. Wear sensible shoes.

026 3 SPRING CREEK WETLANDS

Time: 30mins Distance: 1.5km return Grade: Easy

Located only a few minutes west of Kiama township, Spring Creek offers a wonderful example of rehabilitated wetlands. To get there, follow Terralong St towards Jamberoo, past the A1 highway turn-off and turn right at the 2nd roundabout into Dido St, then right into Glenbrook Drive. The entrance to the park is from a small carpark. Walk along the banks of Spring Creek to the lagoon through a variety of regenerating bushland or enjoy the birdlife from the constructed hide. You’ll find numerous waterbirds and common bush birds including Golden- headed Cisticola, Black-fronted Dotterel, Black-faced Cuckoo-shrike and Mistletoebird.

4 SEVEN MILE BEACH NATIONAL PARK

Time: 30mins Distance: 1.5km return Grade: Easy

Located approximately 15 minutes south of Kiama (turn off the to Gerringong), between the coastal villages of Gerroa and Shoalhaven Heads.

The long sweep of Seven Mile Beach is backed by sand dunes and forest. From the end of Beach Road there is an easily accessible walkway (wheelchair friendly) to a viewing platform and the beach. Nearby is a large grassy picnic area with gas barbecues in the pleasant Bangalay Forest setting. From the picnic area there are marked walking tracks through the forest. Camping is not permitted in the park, however there are a good range of options in both Gerroa and Gerringong.

5 BARREN GROUNDS

Time: 25mins - 2.5hrs Grade: Easy - Medium

Stretching from Kiama to Robertson along the top of the escarpment, this plateau reserve is a favourite for walkers and birdwatchers. Barren Grounds offers many walks taking in views of the coastline and surrounding countryside.

A little bit harder to find, but well worth the effort. See vigorous sprays of water emanating from a natural rocky cove. The spray reaches remarkable heights and can be viewed from a viewing platform or on the rocky foreshore. From here you can walk around to the south to Easts Beach. Works best when winds blow from the north east.
