Some things stay the same, some things are “tweaked” a bit. Chianti is the most famous. Brunello di Montalcino is the most revered. International blends with Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, and other bold grapes are grouped into a category known as “Super Tuscans”, Cabernet Sauvignon serves as the foundation of most of these wines. They are completed and improved by blending Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and sometimes Petit Verdot or Syrah. These wines are the most beloved “children” of their wineries. • Villa Dei Misteri: the Ancient Wine of Pompeii
Villa dei Misteri: The Ancient Wine of Pompeii Everybody knows Italy has a long winemaking historydating back to Roman times, but few are aware of the fact that the same wine the citizens of ancient Rome used to drink is still being produced today. Pompeii (in the Campania region in the south of Italy) is 2000 years old. The city was covered with lava after the volcano, Vesuvio, erupted in 79 B.C. These 18th-century ruins are now visited by more than 2 million tourists each year. What’s new today is the active wine production taking place at that archaeological site! In the 1980s, the Superintendency for the Archaeological Heritagestarted a search beneath the archaeological site to discover the original plants, trees and flowers and recover them after 2000 years had passed. During their research, they discovered grapevines. They turned to Mastroberardino, an historical local winery, known for their efforts to protect and enhance thenative varieties. Researchers asked the winery to handle this piece of the research. The study progressed through several phases and the analysis of the berries and vines remainsin laboratory along with the casts of plants, similar to the amazing casts of the bodies trappedunder the lava. Based upon where the vines were located, the winery was able to reproduce the grapevines with the same density as the original ones Thanks to the numerous books written by Romans, such as Naturalis Historia by Plinio, it was possible to learn more about ancient farming techniques of the vines. In 2001, from this fascinating recovery, "Villa dei Misteri" wine (named after one of the most impressive villas in Pompeii) was born.

SIMPLIFY YOUR LIFE BIANCO \ ROSATO \ ROSSO \ MOSCATO The Grapes The 2019 Montevecchio Rosso is a field blend made up of lagrein (40%), nero d’Avola (15%), pavana (14%) piedirosso (14%), sangiovese (12%) and Aglianico (5%). The majority of these grapevine cultivars were imported into Australia by the Chalmers family in the last twenty years. A co-habitation of grapes originating from all over Italy. Nero d’Avola from Sicily, sangiovese from Tuscany, lagrein from Sud-Tirol, pavana from the veneto, piedirosso and aglianico from Campania. The Vineyard Chalmers Heathcote Vineyard is in the northern part of the Heathcote GI in Central Victoria, Australia and was established in 2008. The vineyard is farmed with a soil health and sustainability focus. The site is warm and well suited to sun loving Italian varieties. It is planted on the east-facing slope of the Mt Camel range. The elevation of the vineyard ranges from 150 to 225 metres above sea- level where the soil is comprised of the famous red Cambrian earth of the region. The Winemaking Montevecchio Rosso is a co-fermented field blend of red Italian varieties, usually fermented in two batches, a mix of the earlier ripening and then the later ripening varieties. The fruit is de-stemmed and fermented in open fermenters without yeast inoculation. The wine undergoes natural malolactic fermentation in stainless steel and is packaged after about 9-12 months. Montevecchio wines are all vegan friendly. The Wine Aromas of fragrant, cherry and forest fruits are balanced perfectly with a generous mid-palate and refreshing acidity. This vibrant, medium- bodied wine has plenty of luscious fruit, earthy tannins and appealing freshness, a great all-rounder.
