(2015) Directed by Dr. Christian Moraru. 352 pp. As a theory and political movement of the late 20th century, multiculturalism has emphasized recognition, tolerance, and the peaceful coexistence of cultures, while providing the groundwork for social justice and the expansion of the American literary canon. However, its sometimes uncomplicated celebrations of diversity and its focus on static, discrete ethnic identities have been seen by many as restrictive. As my project argues, contemporary ethnic American novelists are pushing against these restrictions by promoting what I call transethnicity, the process by which one formulates a dynamic conception of ethnicity that cuts across different categories of identity. Through the use of self-conscious or metafictional narratives, authors such as Louise Erdrich, Junot Díaz, and Percival Everett mobilize metafiction to expand definitions of ethnicity and to acknowledge those who have been left out of the multicultural picture. I further argue that, while metafiction is often considered the realm of white male novelists, ethnic American authors have galvanized self-conscious fiction—particularly stories depicting characters in the act of writing—to defy multiculturalism’s embrace of coherent, reducible ethnic groups who are best represented by their most exceptional members and by writing that is itself correct and “authentic.” Instead, under the transethnic model, ethnicity is self-conflicted, forged through ongoing revision and contestation and in ever- fluid responses to political, economic, and social changes. “NECESSARY FICTIONS”: AUTHORSHIP AND TRANSETHNIC IDENTITY IN CONTEMPORARY AMERICAN NARRATIVES by Leah A. In contrast to those writers, Ellison remarked, “Personally, I am too vindictively American, too full of hate for the hateful aspects of this country, and too possessed by the things I love here to be too long away” (65). Isaacs was hoping to determine African American writers’ connection to the continent of Africa, which some during the Harlem Renaissance thought of as their literary—if not also ancestral—homeland. Ellison’s response confounded the anticipated connection. “I did not—and I do not—feel a lack in my cultural heritage as an American Negro. I think a lot of time is wasted trying to find a substitute in Africa,” he told Isaacs. “The thing to do,” he adds, “is to exploit the meaning of the life you have” (320). Here Ellison was not claiming satisfaction with the definition of African Americanness as it currently stood. 1 Instead, he was alluding to an ability to define his cultural heritage through his writing and his life, regardless of others’ expectations. While Ellison might have based his identity in one country (or continent) over another in order to defy expectations and discover a different meaning to his life, ethnic American writers today, I contend, seek to expand the borders of their literary homelands and, specifically, of ethnicity to encompass a multitude of histories and cultures. Echoing a character in Miguel Syjuco’s Ilustrado (discussed in the penultimate chapter) who surmises that one’s “real home country will be that common ground your work plows between you and your reader” (208), the authors—and the author-protagonists they portray in the works discussed in this dissertation—use their texts to forge unique collaborative junctures. Together, they directly confront and complicate the presumed distinctions between writer and audience in self-conscious or metafictional works of ethnic American fiction that capture the spirit of Ellison’s critical yet capacious Americanness. Actually, the need for more malleable ways of defining ethnicity is as urgent now as it was in Ellison’s era. Terrorist acts in New York and Boston, protests of police brutality and racial oppression in Ferguson and other parts of the country, and attempts to quell immigrant freedoms particularly in relation to the Mexican, South American, and Asian immigrant parents of children known as the DREAMers, have made Americanness and authenticity prominent themes of the current milieu. These and other recent momentous events are crystallizing the vital necessity for adaptable and comprehensive perspectives on identity, as well as personal interactions that destabilize hardened beliefs of whose lives

Labrador Abstract Hawai‘i’s multiculturalism and perceived harmonious race and ethnic relations are widely celebrated in popular and academic discourse. The image of Hawai‘i as a “racial paradise,” a rainbow of peacefully co- existing groups, partially stems from the fact that among the various racial and ethnic groups there is no numerical majority and from the common belief in equality of opportunity and status. Hawai‘i ethnic humor is part and parcel of the maintenance and continued reinforcement of the notion of Hawai‘i as “racial paradise” with underlying racializing and stigmatizing discourses that disguise severe social inequalities and elide differential access to wealth and power. In this paper, I examine the intersection of language, humor, and representation by analyzing the linguistic practices in the comedy performances of Frank DeLima, a pioneer in Hawai‘i ethnic humor, and excerpts from Buckaloose: Shmall Keed Time (Small Kid Time), a comedy CD by Da Braddahs, a relatively new but tremendously popular comedy duo in Hawai‘i. Central to these comedy performances is the use of a language variety that I call Mock Filipino, a strategy often employed by Local comedians to differentiate the speakers of Philippine languages from speakers of Hawai‘i Creole English (or Pidgin). A key component to understanding the use of Mock Filipino is the idea of “Local” as a cultural and linguistic identity category and its concomitant multiculturalist discourse.

    INTRODUCTION OTHER VOICES The Fiction of Raymond Federman Jeffrey R. Di Leo BEFORE—AND AFTER—THEORY Over the past thirty or so years, the fi ction of Raymond Federman has been the subject of a good deal of scholarship in multiple languages. Numerous critical studies of his work have been published.1 Also, doctoral dissertations2 have been written about him, and several volumes celebrating his achieve- ments3 have come out. This is in addition to the many articles and book chapters devoted his work. However, in spite of this wealth of attention, the full range of Federman’s achievements have yet to be fully recognized by the academic community. One of the reasons for this lack of recognition stems from the ways in which Federman’s novels have been categorized. In the United States, Federman’s work has most commonly been connected with a group of writers that brought new “life” to American fi ction in the wake of pro- nouncements of the death of the novel in the late 1960s.4 As such, his revitalizing, innovative peers include Donald Barthelme, Robert Coover, Steve Katz, Clarence Major, Ishmael Reed, Gilbert Sorrentino, and Ronald Sukenick. While the identifi cation of Federman with this group of writers is accurate, important, and not without its merits, in the long run, it has served to exclude or marginalize his work from other—and arguably even more signifi cant—contexts. The goals of BCF are to provide recognition and a wider audience for the wealth of cultural and ethnic diversity that constitutes American writing. BCF has always employed the term “multicultural” not as a description of an aspect of American literature, but as a definition of all American litera- ture. BCF believes that the ingredients of America’s so-called “melting pot” are not only distinct, but integral to the unique constitution of American Culture—the whole comprises the parts. In 1978, the Board of Directors of BCF (authors, editors, and publishers representing the multicultural diversity of American Literature) decided that one of its programs should be a book award that would, for the first time, respect and honor excellence in American literature without restric- tion or bias with regard to race, sex, creed, cultural origin, size of press or ad budget, or even genre.

Sullivan Professor of English Director of Graduate Studies, English *Signatures are on file in the Graduate School. iii ABSTRACT In the post-civil rights era, which is marked by the eradication of legalized racial boundaries, racial passing should be unnecessary and obsolete. Yet contemporary satirists have found satiric portrayals of racial passing to be productive on two levels. On a plot-level, they use passing to interrogate contemporary racial subjectivity and to both explore racial advances and to critique persistent racial inequities. On a structural level, they write fiction that challenges the prescriptive and restrictive aesthetic criteria that they believe African American fiction is required to meet. Ultimately, this fiction offers dynamic critiques of contemporary racial identity and textual production. These authors use satire to examine how the fictional depiction of racial identities/bodies informs, depends on, and dictates the textual body and vice versa. The purpose of the study is to draw on two parallel contemporary literary theories, racial passing and satire, in order to analyze the works of five of the most important and recognized contemporary satiric writers of the post-civil rights generation: Percival Everett, Paul Beatty, Mat Johnson, Trey Ellis, and Adam Mansbach.

Chronology Spoils of war - 1901: Three bells (hereinafter “Balangiga Bells”) were removed from the parish church of San Lorenzo de Martir in Balangiga, Eastern Samar, in the Philippines, and brought to the United States (US) by the 11th Infantry of the US Armed Forces following a retaliatory attack on Filipino locals in the town.1 - 1904: Two of the Balangiga Bells were displayed in a memorial shrine in Cheyenne, Wyoming, dedicated to fallen US soldiers from the Philippine-American War. The third bell was displayed in the 2nd Infantry Division Museum at Camp Red Cloud in the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea.2 - 1989: The Balangiga Historical Society, through the Department of Foreign Affairs of the Government of the Philippines, made the first formal petition to the United States Government calling for the return of the bells.
