HERE WE GO AGAIN Well, here we go... Welcome back! It’s been ten years since MAMMA MIA! THE MOVIE. Ten years The less familiar songs are a delightful (re)discovery. ‘Even if you don’t know an ABBA song,’ in which original creator and producer Judy Craymer and the creative team had time to ruminate, says Judy Craymer, ‘you are going to warm to it, the theatre, the comedy, the emotion.’ Or as cogitate, and consider how – or even if – a second film could follow the success of the first. Meryl Streep puts it, ‘ABBA’s songs are in our DNA’. Each contains that inherent dramatic quality that inspired Judy Craymer in the first place; Benny applauds Björn’s skill at creating these It was, let’s face it, a very hard act to follow. A movie that was the highest-grossing live-action ‘3–minute short stories’. The songs engender and reinforce the rich emotion of the film, musical film of all time, with a record-breaking DVD sale. The soundtrack, a Billboard #1, the themes of motherhood and family, of loss and of love which resonate universally. went platinum. And the stage musical has now been seen by over 60 million people. So ‘When I Kissed The Teacher’, an explosion of effervescent, euphoric energy at the Dynamos’ The upside of those intervening years – including ‘five years to recover from the first one’, as Judy Oxford graduation ceremony, ‘an absolute banger’ in Ol Parker’s phrase, rubs shoulders with Craymer drily observes – was the space to let potential storylines gestate, and build on the work that original warhorse ‘Waterloo’. Here it gets a full-on treatment as young Donna encounters of original writer Catherine Johnson, director Phyllida Lloyd, choreographer Anthony Van Laast & young Harry in the Café Bonaparte in Paris, where the lyrics make total sense and there’s co. In the end it was courtesy of Richard Curtis and writer/director Ol Parker that a way forward a cameo for one B. Likewise a rollicking ‘Why Did It Have To Be Me’, supporting Anthony Van Laast’s choreography It’s a prequel. And a sequel. (We need a neologism for this: let’s just call it a Greequel...) on board young Bill’s boat, sits comfortably alongside the blockbusters ‘Mamma Mia’ and Ten years further on, we learn the truth about the long hot summer of 1979, when Donna ‘Dancing Queen’, each given a canny flick of the rudder. Sheridan romped with three likely lads who became three likely dads... and what happened after Donna and Sam declared ‘I do, I do, I do’ in the chapel on Kalokairi. It was crucial for Judy Craymer to reunite all of the original cast – including Meryl Streep. This time their younger selves, led by Lily James as young Donna, underpin their experience One of the questions everyone had asked was whether there’d be ‘enough’ ABBA songs. and legacy with a fresh shot of youthful energy, reflecting the way MAMMA MIA! continues The answer is a resounding yes. By opening up Donna’s diary and the clues carefully seeded to bring new generations to the sunny optimism of ABBA’s music. Benny appreciates not by Catherine Johnson throughout the original script, the creative team could plunge deep into only the singing of Lily James and the young Dynamos, but the effect of the last ten years. ABBA’s back catalogue. ‘Amanda was good then, but even better now. So is Meryl. It goes to your heart.’ They surfaced with a treasure trove of jewels, revealing some lesser–known gems, polishing up And amongst the voices this time is Donna’s mother, Ruby Sheridan. Cue Cher. As Judy Craymer songs that never made the stage show or the first movie, and re–cutting the classics which just says, ‘Cher had seen the stage musical a few times when it first opened, so we knew she loved had to be there. All in a way that Benny and Björn, the musical and lyrical custodians of ABBA’s MAMMA MIA! and the music in it. She is not just a great actress, she is also an extraordinary legacy, not only approved of but deftly adjusted, tweaking a word here, a chord there, refracted musician.’ The feeling is mutual: for Benny ‘she is such a personality but completely professional, through Benny’s orchestrations and Martin Koch’s musical direction. As Benny notes, totally devoted to the song as it was’. And that deep, resonant voice is unmistakeable. ‘This is really joyful work’. This is a sparkling collection. An irresistible mix of irrepressible joy, laughter, tears and ABBA. They returned, as in the first movie, to the original sounds of each song. ‘The songs are in my With the MAMMA MIA! family brought back together. We hope you enjoy listening. Abstract The role of bass in band or ensemble music literally sets up the foundation of harmony, which must be regarded first. On the other hand, this is also considered so basic or stable that it can be slightly boring to the listeners. Consideration is needed to make the varied trials more exciting. In this sense, Rutger Gunnarsson showed these fine examples not in performing music but in pop music through the Great ABBA. He could make a fabulous sound with only a basic performance, not with a florid technique or rhetorical skills. All bassists must bear in mind that the overall performance depends on the bass.

Multicultural Shakespeare: Translation, Appropriation and Performance; vol. 20 (35), 2019 http://dx.doi.org/10.18778/2083-8530.20.11 ∗ Jana B. Wild On a Romantic Island: Shakespeare and Mamma mia Abstract: The paper concerns the blockbuster musical film Mamma mia, loosely using some of Shakespearean patterns, topoi and plots. Set on a small Greek island, idylic and exotic, the film offers a contemporary romantic story with new/reversed roles in terms of gender, parenthood, sexuality, marriage and age, pointing to a different cultural paradigm. While the Shakespearean level is recast, remixed and probably less visible, the priority is given to the utopia of the 1970s and to the question of its outcome and transformation. Keywords: Mamma mia, musical, popular culture, Shakespeare, The Tempest. This paper concerns the blockbuster musical film Mamma mia (2008) which loosely uses some of Shakespearean patterns, topoi and plots. Set on a small Greek island, idyllic and exotic, the film offers a contemporary romantic story with reversed or reconsidered roles in terms of gender, parenthood, sexuality, marriage and age, pointing to a different cultural paradigm. The musical romantic comedy film Mamma mia is based on the stage musical (1999) with songs of the 1970s popular music group ABBA: The young Sophie, living with her single mother on a Greek island, is about to get married. She wishes her father would give her away though she never knew who it was. In her mother’s diary she had found out that there were three men in question. Despite that she never saw them for they all live far away; she invites all three of them to her wedding without telling her mother Donna.
