Tucker The following list of cancellations of Australia pertaining to sports was compiled in 19- 65. Therefore, it is not complete. Perhaps Mr. Tucker will fill it in in the coming issues. Moreover, the list has deliberately excluded the pictorial cancellations of the Melbourne Olympics as well as the Perth Empire Games. Third, Mr. Tucker has not included any scouting cancellations as he does not classify them as sports cancellations. Again, perhaps he will compile them for us nevertheless. PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE 3 I am happy to announce that Ira Seebacher has taken over the job of editor of J.S.P. He will be assisted by Bill Brecht, our faithful and hard-working publisher. The Advertising Department will be taken over by Verlin Curtis of Cherry Hill, N.J. My thanks to all of them for their cooperation. The SPI Trophy was awarded at Beckpex to Chris Norgard for his exhibit "Soccer on Stamps." Our membership took a clean sweep of the sports section of topicals with Chris first, and Verlin Curtis and myself tied for second. Our youngest member, my daughter Nancy, took first place in the junior section. The trophy has been promised to three exhibitions this fall: Sescal in Los Angeles, Oct. 13-15? Lipex in Malverne, New York, Nov. 3-5, and Sepad in Philadelphia, Nov. 10-12. The board of directors has decided that the trophy cannot be won twice in the same year by the same person. So let's see some of our other members compete for it in the future. And finally I would like to extend my thanks to Bob Bruce for all his work as editor of JSP. His unselfish efforts on behalf of our organization may have gone unrewarded, but they were both noted and appreciated by all. The countless hours of hard work showed his devotion to SPI. So to Bob may I express the appreciation of all of the members for a job well done. OLYMPIANA Helen Turner Greek Sculpture Used on Modern Stamps' Designs During excavations in Athens in 1922, the base of a statue was found built into an ancient wall. One side is plain, probably placed against a wall, the other aide shows activities of Athenian youths in the last part of the VI Century B.C. This base is now in the Athens National Museum. We are concerned with the front face of the base on which are carved four figures! on the left is a runner in starting position, on the right is a spear thrower with his right hand in the loop and testing the balance with his left hand. In the center are two wrestlers. One wrestler grasps his opponent's arm to throw him with a "flying mare". The opponenttries to keep from being turned for the throw by pushing against the other's shoulder* These figures have attracted the attention of present day s tamp designers and we find them on stamps of three different countriess Greece, Seotts 381, showing the entire base and on Ivory Coast, Seotts 215, and Cameroun, Seotts C49, with the wrestlers only.

    For Immediate Release February 28, 2006 Media Contact: John Dakin (970) 949-1999 [email protected] GERMAN OLYMPIC TRIPLE MEDALIST ROSI MITTERMAIER HONORED AS 2006 LEGEND OF HONOR AT COUNTRYWIDE AMERICAN SKI CLASSIC VAIL, Colorado--A very special ceremony will round out the 2006 Countrywide American Ski Classic social festivities Saturday evening, March 25, as one of Germany’s most prolific ski racers will be honored as Rosi Mittermaier is inducted into the International Ski Hall of Fame at the Legends Banquet. “Rosi Mittermaier is a tremendous ambassador for the sport of skiing,” explained Ceil Folz, president of the Vail Valley Foundation. “Her competitive career ranks among the all time greats, while her professional endeavors continue to promote and further skiing at all levels. It is indeed an honor for us to welcome Rosi to the International Ski Hall of Fame as 2006’s Legend of Honor.” A triple Olympic medalist at the 1976 Games in Innsbruck, Austria, Mittermaier claimed the gold in Downhill and Slalom, while mining silver in Giant Slalom. She also collected an FIS World Championships gold medal in Combined at the Innsbruck Games. Mittermaier missed the Olympic hat trick by a mere 12-hundredths of a second as Canadian Kathy Kreiner spoiled the celebration with the Giant Slalom gold. One half second ahead of Kreiner’s pace at the midway timing split, the German lost precious fractions of a second when she took too direct a line into one of the final gates. The season-long 1976 campaign proved to be a special one for Mittermaier.

    2014 Winter Olympic Competing Nations We list below detailed historial Olympic information for every IOC Member Nation that has previously competed at the Olympic Winter Games and that will compete in Sochi, as of 27 January 2014. There appear to be 88 qualified NOCs that have met IF quota requirements as of 24 January, and have accepted them (the previous record for a Winter Olympics is 82 in 2010 at Vancouver). Unfortunately, after reallocation of some quotas, only the skiing federation (FIS) has published the final quotas as of 26 January. We have tried to list below the sports for which each NOC has qualified but there is a small chance, with reallocations, that there may be minor differences in the final allocation by sport. There are seven nations that will compete in Sochi that have never before competed at the Olympic Winter Games – Dominica, Malta, Paraguay, Timor-Leste (East Timor), Togo, Tonga, and Zimbabwe. Their factsheets have been published previously on olympstats.com – see http://olympstats.com/2014/01/23/new-winter-olympic-nations-for-sochi/, which came out on 23 January. One problem nation is listed below and that is DPR Korea (North). They have not qualified any athletes for Sochi. They had the 1st and 2nd reserves for pairs figure skating but those do not appear to have been chosen by final reallocation of quota sports by the International Skating Union (ISU). However, yesterday (26 January), DPR Korea has petitioned the IOC for redress to allow them to have Olympic athletes compete in Sochi. So they are included below but it is unknown if they will compete.
