Philatelists can certainly be a verbal bynoh,-and our membership are certainly no exception. In this month's message, ¥d Tike, to focus on a couple of areas that seemed to be of great interest to many of you: checklists and publications.

Scanning the membership questionnaire, a great many of you offered completed checklists; others said they were in the works. To make things even more interesting, nearly all the checklists were for different sports topicals; few were duplicated! In fact, I was amazed at how specialized some were. Member Bill Stahl has one on Soccer Goal Keepers (how's that for narrowing down a subject). Anyway, faced with this veritable avalanche of offers, SPI Board Member Dorothy Weihrauch contacted Jo Bleakley of the ATA to find out what Sports Lists Jo had (see her current list elsewhere in this issue). Perusing the list, I was surprised at how many Olympic sports were missing: , cycling, canoeing, equestrian, football /soccer, , speed skating, track & field, weight lifting, and yachting! I know that some of you already have lists on these and other sports, so I want to encourage you to contact either Dorothy or, better yet, Jo Bleakley herself at: 15906 Crest Drive, Woodbridge, VA 22191. JSP is going to continue publishing checklists, but fewer pages per issue will be devoted to this area in the interest of providing more articles.

Publishing more books and monographs was an often repeated request by the membership. We agree, and Intend to oblige. Our Handbook, prepared by member George Killian, is going to press very shortly. In addition, Sherwin Podolsky is in the planning stages of editing a handbook on Olympic Collecting, and we are looking for someone to do a companion handbook for sports topicalists. Any takers out there? Finally, even your President Is going to try to get into the act (when ever I find the time) by doing a handbook on the 1960 Squaw Valley Winter Olympics. So you see, folks, we are putting together some interesting things for you In the near future. If you have a monograph or book you would like to produce, let us know. We'll be glad to help!

While on the subject of non-verbal communication, I would like to let you all know that JSP is Instituting a forum specifically for you, our members. Beginning with the September issue of JSP we will have a "Letters" column which we hope you will use to express your appreciation, criticisms, ideas, desires, questions, or simply whatever may pop into your head. You need not limit yourself to subjects relating specifically to JSP or even SPI; maybe you're miffed about the design (or lack thereof) of current sports stamps, or possibly the issue of professionalism versus amateurism has got you down. If so, let us know! Remember, the September issue of JSP goes to print on August 1, so let us hear from you soon!

ALPINE SKIING CHAMPIONSHIPS

BY JOHN LA PORTA & GEORGE SCHEFFEL

The Championships were held at Valgardena In Balzono Prov ence in Northern , from February 6th through the 15th 1970. Italy Issued a 50 lira stamp, showing a downhill skier, to honor the event. I have a number of attractive covers of various dates and venues. Two covers dated February 7 and February 9 have a cachet showing a downhill skier similar to the one on the stamp, (flg.l). There is also a series of covers from the various venues and with an assortment of dates. They all have the same postmark indicating that a mobile postoffice was uBed. The circular postmark has a posthorn at the top, three rings and date in the center. Each of the covers has a cachet, some blue and some red, showing the area of the venues with the ski runs Indicated in the picture. The illustrations below identify the various venues. The men'B title was won by of Austria. The women's title was won by Mlchele Jacot of France.

169 Atlanta 1996 by Mark Maestrone

Superior Access; world class Accommodations; modern Athletic Facilities: a friendly, confident Attitude; and, Ability stemming from experience. These are the elements that form the basis for Atlanta's bid to host the" Games of the XXVIth Olympiad in 1996. That's right, ATLANTA! The city that served as a backdrop for that memorable vision of Scarlet O'Hara in "Gone With The Wind" has a new vision - - to play host to the centennial celebration of the world's greatest amateur sports spectacle. Industrial and financial center of the South, Atlanta, Georgia believes it's ready. And you know what, I think it is!

In the Beginning . . .

Atlanta's efforts began in February 1987 as the dreams of one man, Billy Payne (President of the Atlanta Olympic Committee or AOC). For some reason, Atlantans with dreams seem to eventually prevail as evidenced by one of the city's most famous sons, Martin Luther King, Jr. With roughly 15 months until the USOC would make its decision on the U.S. S Candidate City, there were many people to convince, starting with Mayor Andrew Young, a dreamer from way back. But with a great deal of effort, the USOC became a convert as Atlanta well, designating Atlanta, in April 1988, as the U.S. candidate for the 1996 Games.

The Plan 1996

As Is de rigueur ever since the success of the 1984 Games in Los Angeles, Atlanta's 099 plan calls for the use of as many existing facilities as possible, and financing from a select group of sponsors and licensees. Unlike Los Angeles, however, these Games will be concentrated in three distinct venue clusters: the Olympic Centre in downtown Atlanta; within the Olympic Ring, a circle with a 1.5 mile (2.5 km) radius whose hub Is the Olympic Centre; and, the Olympic Park at Stone Mountain, an existing 3,200 acre recreational park 18 miles (29 km) from the city center. Only three venues will be located outside of these clusters: at Blackburn Park a 20-minute ride north from downtown; yachting at Savannah, Georgia (250 miles southeast of Atlanta); and, white water canoeing on the Ocoee River/ spanning the Georgia and Tennessee state line (100 miles north of Atlanta). The Olympic Centre. At the very heart of the city is a vast complex of sporting and exhibition facilities that will play host to fully one-third of the sports events. The World Congress Center, a 2-building complex of more

170 than 27 acres (11 hectares), will seat over 7,500 for badminton, handball, and ; 5,000 for : and, 3,000 for . will be contested in the adjacent 17,000 seat Omni Arena, home of the Atlanta Hawks professional basketball team. But the centerpiece of the Olympic Centre will be the Georgia Dome, a 72,000 seat state-of-the-art enclosed stadium to be completed in 1992. The Dome will be divided in half for concurrent competition in basketball and . "* . \"V- v ,' \ *

The Olympic Ring. The central venue of the Games will be the new Olympic Stadium to be constructed adjacent to the existing Atlanta Stadium (baseball). Not more than 2 miles from the Olympic Centre, "the southern stands of the Olympic Stadium [will] rise in dramatic fashion in five impressive decks, while the northern stands descend from ground level in the manner of the coliseums of ancient Greece." With seating for 85,000, the Olympic Stadium will be the focus of activity for the 16 days of summer, as an expected 16,500 athletes march during Opening and Closing Ceremonies, and take part in athletics, football, and equestrian showjumping. The other major venue complex within the Olympic Ring will be new facilities for and built expressly for the on the campus of the Georgia Institute of Technology, better known as Georgia Tech. The Georgia Tech Coliseum will host . Probably most important, from the athletes standpoint, is that the campus will serve as their home-away-from- home. The existing student dormitory facilities will be augmented by a magnificent pair of twin 30-story residential towers at the entrance to the campus. On either side of what will become known as Olympic Boulevard, the planned neo-classical Olympic Towers will form a gateway to the Village: from their facades, the Olympic Rings will be permanently suspended over the boulevard!

The Olympic Park at Stone Mountain. A 30-minute drive east of the city is one of Georgia's most famous landmarks: the world's largest granite formation known as Stone Mountain. Already a widely-used recreational park with broad lakes, this facility will serve as the venue for , flat water canoeing and , equestrian sports, , and shooting. In addition, a new open-air 10,000 seat Velodrome will be built specifically for Olympic competition. The lush park with Stone Mountain as a backdrop will undoubtedly provide a breathtaking setting for these 7 sports.

. . . September 1990, Tokyo, Japan

As with all dreams, the Atlanta Organizing Committee must eventually place their trust in other's hands when its representatives will travel to Tokyo, Japan to make their case to the members of the International Olympic Committee. Most of the facilities will be in place, interconnected by Atlanta's rapid transit system (MARTA), and the people of Georgia will be waiting for the estimated 250,000 visitors, 16,500 athletes, and 15,000 members of the media. And if all goes well, Billy Payne's wish will come true as "the youth of the world reassemble" in Atlanta, Georgia In 1996. 1989 U.S. POSTMARKS by Norman Rushefsky

This was a busy year for those collecting baseball related cancels. The concurrence of the 150th anniversary of the invention of the game by Abner Doubleday, the 50th anniversaries of the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York and the founding of Little League baseball provided

172 suitable themes for baseball postmarks. The issuance of the Lou Gehrig stamp added fuel to the fire of interest. The first day of the Gehrig stamp was held in Cooperstown to mark the anniversary of this museum. While the U.S. celebrated the 150th anniversary of the invention of baseball it should be noted that Canada celebrated the 150th anniversary of the invention of baseball in Canada in 1988, see Figures 1a &1b which illustrate the front and back of a first day cover of a Canadian stamp* issued to commemorate their anniversary.

FILATELIA SFORT - OLIMFICA #25

The December, 1989, issue of the journal of the Sports Group of the Italian Thematic Association devotes nearly all of its first 17 pages (out of a total of 43) to an account with many photos of the joint meeting and competitive stamp exhibition with the comparable German organization, IMOS, held last September. Although we are advised that the encounter was won by the German exhibitors, no information is provided as to who exhibited what nor as to individual awards.

Short articles in this issue are devoted to varieties of the Spanish 6 pesetas 1960 steeplechase stamp, Scott C169; to new stamps, cancels and postal stationery picturing windsurfing; to French and Italian cancellations picturing famous bicycle racers; and to antecedents of the modern game of tennis. Longer articles relate to new and newly discovered sports-related meters, to new basketball material, and to a review of the volleyball-related material which appeared during ths year 1987.

The Italian organization AICAtl (acronym for the Italian meter collectors organization) has publish ed its study #105, titled "350 e passa Affrancatur e Meccaniche sportive." It reproduces 367 lesser—known sports and Olympics meter cancels. It is available from AICAM, Viale Famagosta 24, 20142 Milano, Italy. The cost for a photocopy plus local postage in Italy is Italian lire 9,000. Those in the U.S. who wish to purch ase it should add sufficient additional for airmail pos tage abroad, since surface mail from Italy to the U.S. t akes at least three months.

MATCHPOINT Quarterly Newsletter of Tennis Philately/

Issue number 18 (March, 1990) of MATCHPOINT consists of 6 pages, well balanced between discussions of new tennis material and feature articles. (The preceding issue for December, 1989, is number 17, not 16 as indicated in a previous review).

179 The feature article concludes the account Df tennis in the early Olympics, covering tennis participation in the summer games of 1912, 1920 and 1924. Another article deals with a specialized study of the early Wimbledon cancellations, of which earliest documented usage is for the 1948 matches. The lead article discusses telephone cards relating to tennis. Two are known at praseritK one from Japan (illustrated here) and one from France., .The question as to whether these are valid philatelic ' items seems to be dependent upon whether or not the telephone system of the issuing cotintry is still part of a larger PTT (post, telephone and telegraph) system.

4IN

TELEPHONE CARO 105

An example of the exceedingly rare vertical pair imperforate horizontally of the earliest tennis stamp ( Scott 381a) is illustrated. This lot was sold ii the October, 1989, Cherrystone auction. Despite the fact that it is discolored and without gum, it fetcl" ad $375 plus 107. commission. Another short article deals with two very scarce early tennis cancellations, those for the Belgian seaside resorts of Knock* and Zoute.

The balance of this issue describes new - and newly discovered - tennis stamps and illustrates recent tennis cancellations. The next auction of tennis material will take place in April.

Membership in the Tennis Study Group is a "must" for tennis collectors. Membership, which includes 4 issues of MATCHPOINT, costs $4.00 for collectors residing in the U.S. and *6.00 for collectors abroad. Write Les Yerkes, P. 0. Box 424, Albuquerque NM 87103.

FIPO DOCUMENT NUMBER 17

The most recent issue of the International Federation of Olympic F'hilately's publication (dated December, 1989)

180 numbers 126 pages. The editor, Maurizio Tecardi, advises that future issues of the periodical will include a section on contacts among members, relating either to requests for exchange of philatelic material (i.e., "want ads") or general correspondence between members on philatelic or other subjects. It is noted also that permission will be granted (upon written request) for ^the. -». reproduction of original articles appearing in FIPOv' "ft documents.

Original articles in this issue relate to the first use of the Olympic flag and the first celebration of an Olympic Day (in 1914 in , , on the occasion of the Pan-Egyptian Games), and on the sport of badminton (written by Patrick Calcaterra, mixed doubles champion of Lorraine (France)). There is a brief article about. Varna, Bulgaria, where OLYMPHILEX '90 will be held this fall. The FIF "Guidelines to the Regulations for the Evaluation of Thematic Exhibits," which are relevant for persons exhibiting internationally in FIF'—sponsored exhibitions, are printed in their entirety in both the French and English versions.

Twenty pages of this issue are devoted to reproductions of new sports issues of various countries, together with the technical information about the stamps, supplied by their postal administrations. A number of examples of new sports-related postal stationery and covers with recent sports-related cancels (sent in by FIPO members) are reproduced. Mr. Tecardi also advises that, beginning with the next issue of this publication, specialized articles will begin to appear about each Olympic sport. The first will relate to the pentathlon, to be followed by . He asks that readers send him photocopies of the prize items in their collections, which will be used to illustrate the various articles. He may be addressed c/o Musee Olympique, Avenue Ruchonnet 18, 1003 Lausanne, .

The final 56 pages of this issue are devoted to excerpts from auction catalogs offering for sale scarce Olympics and sports material, with both the auction firms' descriptions of the items and starting bids as well as (in most cases) reproductions of the items. Since many of these (mainly European) firms are not well known in the U.S., there follow some of their names and addresses, to which members may wish to write asking to be included on the mailing list for future catalcgs.
