In this month's message, ¥d Tike, to focus on a couple of areas that seemed to be of great interest to many of you: checklists and publications. Scanning the membership questionnaire, a great many of you offered completed checklists; others said they were in the works. To make things even more interesting, nearly all the checklists were for different sports topicals; few were duplicated! In fact, I was amazed at how specialized some were. Member Bill Stahl has one on Soccer Goal Keepers (how's that for narrowing down a subject). Anyway, faced with this veritable avalanche of offers, SPI Board Member Dorothy Weihrauch contacted Jo Bleakley of the ATA to find out what Sports Lists Jo had (see her current list elsewhere in this issue). Perusing the list, I was surprised at how many Olympic sports were missing: badminton, cycling, canoeing, equestrian, football /soccer, handball, speed skating, track & field, weight lifting, and yachting! I know that some of you already have lists on these and other sports, so I want to encourage you to contact either Dorothy or, better yet, Jo Bleakley herself at: 15906 Crest Drive, Woodbridge, VA 22191. JSP is going to continue publishing checklists, but fewer pages per issue will be devoted to this area in the interest of providing more articles. Publishing more books and monographs was an often repeated request by the membership. We agree, and Intend to oblige. Our Basketball Handbook, prepared by member George Killian, is going to press very shortly. In addition, Sherwin Podolsky is in the planning stages of editing a handbook on Olympic Collecting, and we are looking for someone to do a companion handbook for sports topicalists. Any takers out there? Finally, even your President Is going to try to get into the act (when ever I find the time) by doing a handbook on the 1960 Squaw Valley Winter Olympics. So you see, folks, we are putting together some interesting things for you In the near future. If you have a monograph or book you would like to produce, let us know. We'll be glad to help! While on the subject of non-verbal communication, I would like to let you all know that JSP is Instituting a forum specifically for you, our members. Beginning with the September issue of JSP we will have a "Letters" column which we hope you will use to express your appreciation, criticisms, ideas, desires, questions, or simply whatever may pop into your head. You need not limit yourself to subjects relating specifically to JSP or even SPI; maybe you're miffed about the design (or lack thereof) of current sports stamps, or possibly the issue of professionalism versus amateurism has got you down. BOX 448, MONROE, N.Y. 10950 164 THE 1970 WORLD CUP ALPINE SKIING CHAMPIONSHIPS BY JOHN LA PORTA & GEORGE SCHEFFEL The Championships were held at Valgardena In Balzono Prov­ ence in Northern Italy, from February 6th through the 15th 1970. Italy Issued a 50 lira stamp, showing a downhill skier, to honor the event. I have a number of attractive covers of various dates and venues. Two covers dated February 7 and February 9 have a cachet showing a downhill skier similar to the one on the stamp, (flg.l). There is also a series of covers from the various venues and with an assortment of dates. They all have the same postmark indicating that a mobile postoffice was uBed. The circular postmark has a posthorn at the top, three rings and date in the center. Each of the covers has a cachet, some blue and some red, showing the area of the venues with the ski runs Indicated in the picture. The illustrations below identify the various venues.
