Friday 4th December 2014 MAC Arts, Galashiels Speaker Biogs James Mackintosh – CABN Advocate for Music James is an experienced touring and session musician, composer and teacher; equally at home on the road, in the recording studio and on the film set. He is a founding member of groundbreaking Scottish group Shooglenifty, touring globally for over 20 years, playing concerts and festivals in New Zealand, Australia, Europe, USA, Canada and Asia. He is co founder of label "Shoogle Records". He has extensive teaching and workshop experience in drums, percussion and group work and has hosted workshops at concerts and festivals around the globe, from Seattle to Sydney. As one of CABN’s Advocates, James designs and delivers support for the music sector through advice sessions and events covering topics relevant to music professionals. Tom Bancroft – Musician, Drummer, Managing Director at ABC Creative Music Tom Bancroft is a drummer, composer, bandleader and educator. Once a Cambridge educated medical doctor Tom now makes his living from music. He has played with musicians ranging from Sun Ra & Martyn Bennett to Geri Allen and Bill Wells. He has led big band Orchestro Interrupto for more than 20 years and now leads small band Trio Red, as well as being a long term member of Trio AAB and the Dave Milligan Trio. He is a founder member of the Pathhead Music Collective which won the £50,000 Creative Places Award in 2013 for his village where Tom and 14 other professional musicians live and run concerts and education and community projects. Heather MacLeod – Leod Music, Stoneyport Associates, Bevvy Sisters, Loveboat Big Band Originally from the Isle of Lewis, Heather has appeared with many different bands including McFalls Chamber, La Boum! and currently the Bevvy Sisters and the Loveboat Big Band - who have their roots in the much loved Bongo Club. Heather also set up her own record company and self-released her solo debut ‘Crossing Tides’. Her glowing reputation for fine vocal arrangements, signature in the Bevvy's work, has featured in work by Eliza Carthy and Dick Gaughan amongst many others. Backstage, Heather works as assistant for Stoneyport Associates, one of Scotland's biggest roots booking agencys,and at that office also handles all aspects of The Bevvy Sisters and The Loveboat Big Bands work, ranging from booking, promotion, co-ordination, and development of profile. Ian Smith - Music and IP Development at Creative Scotland Ian is responsible for all areas pertaining to music and the development of Intellectual Property. He leads on the international promotion of music from Scotland on a global scale with dedicated showcases in North America, Australasia/New Zealand, throughout Europe and our own Showcase Scotland at Celtic Connections which attracts delegates from all around the world and is now worth £3M in artist bookings alone. He also leads on the Made in Scotland music programme at the Edinburgh Fringe. Ian has successfully developed a profile for IP at Creative Scotland including a government funded programme (Knowledge Transfer Partnership) with the University of St Andrews. He leads a dedicated team of music specialists ensuring that music plays a vital and creative role in the wider Creative Scotland portfolio embracing both aesthetic and economic excellence. Simon Thoumire - Hands Up for Trad Simon Thoumire is a concertina player and composer who has been fortunate to perform all over the world. He has made many CDs with fabulous musicians including most recently Ian Carr and David Milligan. Simon has spent the last decade working with Hands Up for Trad who organise the Scots Trad Music Awards, BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician Award, Scotland Sings and many other projects designed to promote Scottish music. You can also visit Simon’s family business Foot Stompin’ Scottish Music. Duncan McCrone – MCPS Born and raised in Glasgow, Duncan McCrone took up a post with MCPS in Scotland in 1989. Since then, he has travelled all over Scotland meeting record companies, pressing plants, studios, TV producers, and other music users, as well as MCPS member publishers and composers. Due to increased activities in the scene, MCPS opened a Scottish office in 1996 in Glasgow City Centre. Duncan is in regular contact with people from Shetland to the Borders and has become very well known in the industry. Mike Small – Shark Batter Records Founder of Shark Batter Records, and former member of the iconic ‘Dawn of the Replicants’ 1993-1997 Co-Founder and General Manager of SZS Publications. Our magazine 'Sun Zoom Spark' was the biggest underground music title in the UK at the time. We also published 'The Trigger', a fortnightly music paper, 'Genius', a social issues magazine sold through UK high schools and 'Border Life', which we sold to the Tweeddale Press Group. 1997-2007 Member of the experimental rock group 'Dawn of the Replicants'. Signed to East West Records (Warner MusicUK) and released 5 critically acclaimed albums. We playedGlastonbury, Reading and T in the Park and recorded 5 sessions for John Peel's Radio 1 show. 2007-2011 Founded and ran 'Shark Batter Records', during this time I also promoted gigs and did music management. 2011-Present Have been focused on the writing, recording and video production of my own project 'Of Human Bonding', which will be launched shortly through 'Shark Batter Records'. Lisa Denham – Business Manager, Arts Development, Scottish Borders Council Lisa originally joined the Arts Development Team in 2006. Having studied Business Management, previous roles include Senior Regeneration Officer as part of the Eyemouth East Berwickshire Partnership and Housing Strategy Assistant. The Arts Development Team, is a constituent part of Cultural Services and covers all art forms including music, dance, drama, digital media, literature, touring theatre, events and audience development, youth music and creative learning. The team provides schools, community groups, voluntary organisations and businesses with access to a wide range of quality arts activities and programmes, including guidance and advice on funding, training and learning. The team encompasses the Creative Arts Business Network (CABN) based at Heart of Hawick, Voice of My Own (VOMO), the Creative Learning Team, Performing Arts as well as the What’s On in the Scottish Borders Events guide, creative writing, Borders Live Touring (facilitating theatre, dance and music in a network of venues across the Scottish Borders) and the Artstore community equipment resource. The Arts Development service strives to support, promote and develop arts and cultural activity across the Scottish Borders working in partnership with schools, community groups and the public and private sector.
