12 THE STAR-SPANGLED BANNER LIFT EVERY VOICE AND SING

BY FRANCIS SCOTT KEY BY JAMES WELDON JOHNSON

0 , say can you see, by t he dawn's early light, Lift every voice and sing, till earth and Heaven ring, What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming? Ring with the harmonies of liberty; Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight, Let our rejoicing rise, high as the listening skies, O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming? Let it resound loud as the rolling sea. And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us; O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave Facing the rising sun of our new day begun, O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave? Let us march on till victory is won.

On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep, Stony the road we trod, bitter the chastening rod, Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes, Felt in the days when hope unborn had died; What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep, Yet with a steady beat, have not our weary feet, As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses? Come to the place for which our fathers sighed? Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam, We have come over a way that with tears has been watered, In full glory reflected now shines in the stream: We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered; 'Tis the star-spangled banner! 0 long may it wave Out from the gloomy past, till now we stand at last O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave. Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion Thou Who hast brought us t hus far on the way; A home and a country should leave us no more? Thou Who hast by Thy might, led us into the light, Their blood has washed out their foul footstep's pollution. Keep us forever in the path, we pray. No refuge could save the hireling and slave Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee. From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave: Lest our hearts, drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee. And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave Shadowed beneath Thy hand, may we forever stand, O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave. True to our God, true to our native land.

O! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand Between their loved homes and the war's desolation! Blest with victory and peace, may the heaven-rescued land Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation. Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, And this be our motto: "In God is our trust." And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave O'er the land of t he free and t he home of the brave!

13 ''HIS IS A SILLY STORY''

BY DAVID JAMES FAIRBANKS WINNER OF THE 2017 COMMENCEMENT POETRY COMPETITION

his is a silly story sometimes: a boy sent to a people in need of saving, found by farmers and raised as theirs

it's practically biblical

yet he wakes for work each morning, weighs his capabilities against clocking in late, against making a dinner date and decides how to be his best self. it's a silly story sometimes, until we accept it could be ours
