  • Appendix 1: Translation of the Vita Barbatiani
APPENDIX 1: TRANSLATION OF THE VITA BARBATIANI This translation is based predominantly on the 1909 edition of Lanzoni; however, a few alternative readings from the manuscripts have been used and sections have been renumbered. Here begin the deeds of St. Barbatianus, the Presbyter and Confessor 1 1. I think it only proper, as I embark upon this story of miracles, fi rst to explain in which localities of the imperial cities the wonderful struggle of the saints took place. That way, the miracles which occupy the beginning of the narrative might inspire faith in what will be related subsequently, because a great people and a great and mighty city proclaim that they truly happened. Now, when Zosimus, Pope of the city of Rome, had by God’s will ceased to hold the episcopate [upon his death], there was confl ict among the clergy over the apostolic see, and they chose two bishops, one named Boniface and the other Eulalius. 2 They ordained Boniface in the basilica of Constantine. The empress Galla Placidia with her son, the emperor Valentinian, hearing this while they were staying in Ravenna, brought the news to the emperor Honorius who had remained in Milan. The two emperors sent a warrant ordering that both men should leave the city, so that both (popes) left the city of Rome. After they had been expelled, the holy day of Easter approached. Then Eulalius with daring boldness came into the city © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s) 2016 155 E.M. • Practicing Love of God in Medieval Jerusalem, Gaul and Saxony
he collection of essays presented in “Devotional Cross-Roads: Practicing Love of God in Medieval Gaul, Jerusalem, and Saxony” investigates test case witnesses of TChristian devotion and patronage from Late Antiquity to the Late Middle Ages, set in and between the Eastern and Western Mediterranean, as well as Gaul and the regions north of the Alps. Devotional practice and love of God refer to people – mostly from the lay and religious elite –, ideas, copies of texts, images, and material objects, such as relics and reliquaries. The wide geographic borders and time span are used here to illustrate a broad picture composed around questions of worship, identity, reli- gious affiliation and gender. Among the diversity of cases, the studies presented in this volume exemplify recurring themes, which occupied the Christian believer, such as the veneration of the Cross, translation of architecture, pilgrimage and patronage, emergence of iconography and devotional patterns. These essays are representing the research results of the project “Practicing Love of God: Comparing Women’s and Men’s Practice in Medieval Saxony” guided by the art historian Galit Noga-Banai, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and the histori- an Hedwig Röckelein, Georg-August-University Göttingen. This project was running from 2013 to 2018 within the Niedersachsen-Israeli Program and financed by the State of Lower Saxony. • Life of Saint Christina of Bolsena
Life of Saint Christina of Bolsena Shortly: Life of Saint Christina describes the life of a beautiful little girl who was tortured by her father and his successors. She finally gained martyrdom at a young age of eleven or twelve. Christina fulfills the divine call of discipleship to propagate christianity among the pagans. Saint Christina is a martyr who lived during the 3rd century A.C. Her icons show her bound to a stone, holding few arrows and with snakes around her foots. There are many stories and accounts regarding the life of Saint Christina. However, the early life of St. Christina is more or less the same in all the texts. Early Life of St. Christina Not much is known about the early life of Saint Christina. There is no mention about her mother or her siblings. Her whole life is centered on her father, Urbain, member of a well known Roman family Anici (St. Lucia was from the same roman family). The meaning of the name Christina is " Little Christ" and was probably given to her inside of the Christian community. Local tradition wants her to be born here in Bolsena, but there is the same tradition in the coastal City of Tyre, modern Lebanon. It may be that she was born in Tyre and moved to Bolsena along with her father, a powerful magistrate who was sent to command the military in roman city of Bolsena (Vulsinii nuova). Her parents were staunch believers of the rituals of Paganism. They were idol worshipers and were against Christianity. The accounts of her early life reveal her father to be a wealthy and a cruel man who had tortured her because of her belief in Christianity (as it was duty of military during the government of emperor Diocletian).
