Daily Saints - 20 July Feast of St. Apollinaris of Ravenna. He is the patron against epilepsy and against gout He is mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles. Saint Peter sent Apollinaris to Ravenna, Italy, as its first bishop. St. Apollinaris was one of the first great martyrs of the church. The miracles he conducted in Ravenna soon attracted official attention, for, they and his preaching won many converts to the faith. However, at the same time, his words and works brought upon the fury of the pagan people who beat Apollinaris cruelly on several occasions and drove him from the city. He returned, however, and was exiled a second time. After preaching in the area surrounding Ravenna, he entered the city again. After being cruelly tortured, During one beating, Apollinaris was cut with knives, and scalding hot water poured over his wounds, then put on a ship to be sent to Greece. In Greece the same course of preachings, and miracles, sufferings continued. In fact, after a cruel beating by Greek pagans, Pagans there caused him to be expelled to Italy, where he went to Ravenna for a fourth time. He died from wounds received during a savage beating at Classis, a suburb of Ravenna. When Emperor Vespasian issued a decree of banishment against the Christians, Apollinaris was kept hidden for some time, but as he was leaving, passing through the gates of the city, he was attacked and savagely beaten. He lived for seven days, foretelling that the persecutions would increase, but that the Church would ultimately triumph. He was a noted miracle worker. Centuries after his death he appeared in a vision to Saint Romuald. .

Here begin the deeds of St. Barbatianus, the Presbyter and Confessor 1 1. I think it only proper, as I embark upon this story of miracles, fi rst to explain in which localities of the imperial cities the wonderful struggle of the saints took place. MASS TIMES AND INTENTIONS St. Romuald, Abbot - Feast day: Saturday, June 19 Saint Romuald, who founded the Camaldolese monastic order during the early eleventh century, has his liturgical memorial on June 19. Working within the Western Church’s Benedictine tradition, he revived the primitive monastic practice of hermit life, allowing for greater solitude in a communal setting. Born into an aristocratic family during the middle of the tenth century, Romuald grew up in a luxurious and worldly environment, where he learned little in the way of self-restraint or religious devotion. Yet he also felt an unusual attraction toward the simplicity of monastic life, prompted by the beauty of nature and the experience of solitude . It was not beauty or tranquility, but a shocking tragedy that spurred him to act on this desire. When Romuald was 20 years old, he saw his father Sergius kill one of his relatives in a dispute over some property. Disgusted by the crime he had witnessed, the young man went to the Monastery of St. Apollinaris to do 40 days of penance for his father. These 40 days confirmed Romuald’s monastic calling, as they became the foundation for an entire life of penance. ...He left the area near Ravenna and went to Venice, where he became the disciple of the hermit Marinus. Both men went on to encourage the monastic vocation of Peter Urseolus, a Venetian political leader who would later be canonized as a saint. When Peter joined a French Benedictine monastery, Romuald followed him and lived for five years in a nearby hermitage.
