Walden Fr. Novajosky’s Note In last week’s bulletin I presented some of my thoughts and vision for the parish that I hope we can accomplish together. In this week’s note I wish to offer a short biography. My name is Michael Patrick Novajosky, taking the names of my parents Michael and Patricia. Born at St. Vincent Hospital in 1983, I grew up in the North End of Bridgeport, a few blocks from the Catholic Center and St. Andrew Church. Mom and Dad still live in the same home today. Don’t be sur- prised if you see them at my Sunday Masses as at least one of them will often try to attend whenever possible. They usually sit in the first few rows and try to be on the side where I will distribute Holy Communion. I am the oldest of four, two brothers and a sister. They are all local in Bridgeport, Monroe and Shelton. When it was time for Kindergarten, St. Andrew School only began at the firstgrade level. In- sistent that their children would attend Catholic school, my family became parishioners at St. Theresa in Trumbull and all four of us attended the school. After Graduation I continued across town to St. Joseph High School and, while there, I embraced the formal beginning of my discernment to become a priest. I graduated from high school in 2001 and entered St. John Fisher Seminary in Stamford where I lived for two years while attending Sacred Heart University. It was my first experience with philosophy and I never turned back. Philosophy remains an important part of my life as I also teach college classes to the seminarians in philosophy today (Contemporary Philosophy, Philosophical Theology and Philoso- phy of Human Nature). After two years of undergraduate studies, I transferred to the Catholic Universi- ty of America and resided at Theological College as part of a scholarship opportunity. I spent three years in Washington, D.C. completing my bachelor’s degree and earning a licentiate in philosophy (Ph.L.), the equivalent to a master’s Degree. In 2006 I continued to sense the call and desire toward the priesthood and so I began my theological studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome while residing at the Pontifical North American College. My five years in the Eternal City were a gift and even today, as I recall them, they have a dreamlike quality to them. I learned the Italian language, became an unofficial Roman and dis- covered a new culture and the broader experience of the truly Catholic, that is Universal, Church. After five years of study, having competed both my bachelor’s degree and licentiate in sacred theology, I was assigned as an associate at St. Jude in Monroe in 2011. My time as an associate was shortlived. The following year I was reduced to parttime status and took on the responsibility of chaplain at my alma mater, St. Joseph High School. In 2013 I ceased as an associate and became the fulltime chaplain at the school with weekend responsibilities at the parish, where I lived until September 2016 when I moved to the Cathedral as a resident. I remained at St. Joseph until the end of last month until I became the Pastor on June 30. In addition, in February I was appointed as the Coordinator of Diaconate Formation. Bridgeport is home. Even though I attended school out of the city, I am back. My parents were married at St. Augustine in 1977. My grandparents, Ed and Mary Novajosky were long time parishioners of St. Patrick. Two of the most vivid liturgical memories are attending the Easter Vigil in the upper church of St. Pat’s back in sixth grade with my grandparents and my grandfather’s funeral in the lower church the summer of my senior year of high school. It is a joy to be at a parish that consists of two churches that have played important roles in the life of my family. I hope to be a part of helping other families at both the highs and lows of their lives to receive the love the Lord Jesus Christ and discover again and again the beauty and truth of his Church. St. Augustine and St. Patrick, our patrons, pray for us! En la nota de esta semana, deseo ofrecer una breve biografía. Mi nombre es Michael Patrick Novajosky, tomando los nombres de mis padres Michael y Patricia. Nací en el Hospital San Vicente en 1983 y crecí en el North End de Bridgeport, a pocas cuadras del Cen- tro Católico y de la Iglesia de San Andrés. Mamá y papá todavía viven en la misma casa. No se sorprenda si los ven en mis Misas dominicales, ya que al menos uno de ellos tratará de asistir siempre que sea posi- ble. Por lo general, se sientan en las primeras filas y tratan de estar en el lado donde se distribuye la Sa- grada Comunión. Soy el mayor de cuatro, dos hermanos y una hermana. Learn your Faith...A Weekly Educational Column MESSAGE OF JOHN PAUL II TO THE ARCHBISHOP OF RAVENNACERVIA ON OCCASION OF THE 1450th ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEDICATION OF THE BASILICA OF ST. APOLLINARIS IN CLASSE To my Venerable Brother LuigiAmaducciArchbishop of RavennaCervia 1. The renowned and ancient Archdiocese of Ravenna, which you lead with zeal and wisdom, is prepar- ing to celebrate the 1450th anniversary of the dedication of the Basilica of St Apollinaris inClasse, con- secrated by ArchbishopMaximianin 549, barely a year after the dedication of the Basilica of St Vitalis. The event is especially important because the basilica, a church of rare beauty, is considered the cradle of the Christian faith in this region and preserves the body of its first Bishop, St Apollinaris, who evan- gelized Ravenna in the second half of the second century and later became patron of the city, the Dio- cese and the entire region. During the celebration of this significant event, I would like to be united in spirit with the people of Ra- venna, who are giving fervent thanks to the Lord for the countless benefits they have received through- out their long history of faith. The city, famous for its memories of a glorious past and for the splendid monuments that adorn it, owes its greatness to the skill and diligence of its children, who were and are the attentive and hardworking artisans of its civil and economic development. It also benefited from some particular circumstances which made it a very important political and culturalcentre, open to di- alogue with the East. From here shone the last rays of the Western Empire in the turbulent period of its tragic setting; from here came the providential fusion of young energy from the peoples of Northern Europe with the cultural riches of the Roman genius; from here the first witnesses to the Christian faith spread to the surrounding region. Among them St Apollinaris holds a significant place as the first Bish- op of the Church of Ravenna, who, by hislabourand suffering, laid the firm foundations of the city's Christian history. 2. As is well known, the famous sacred monument desired by ArchbishopUrsicinus(534538) and built under the supervision of JulianArgentarius, patron of Ravenna, where the important Roman port was located hence the name "inClasse" offers the visitor a view, framed by the triumphal arch, of Christ in the act of blessing, surrounded by the Evangelists; then in the apse vault stands a great jeweled cross with the face of the transfigured Christ in thecentre, and below, among many symbolic figures, is an image of St Apollinaris in a gesture of priestly prayer.Thusthe basilica's very structure, marked by a splendid series of columns, shows Christ as thecentreof faith and God's response to the expectations of the restless human heart to every pilgrim who crosses its threshold in search of light and peace. The Church of Ravenna will not fail to offer anew this perennially valid response, taking her cue from the celebrations planned. They are providentially part of the preparations for the Great Jubilee of the Year 2000, which will also be a renewed call for the people of Ravenna to follow Christ courageously and to listen to his words, as they continue to give the joyful and united response of faith which has always marked their history. In this perspective I hope that the extraordinary synthesis of faith and beauty, which Gospelinspired artists expressed so many centuries ago in the church's architectural lines and mosaic creations, willarouse in every visitor a deep desire to know the Lord, in order to bear witness to him in word and deed, after the example of the holy Bishop Apollinaris. 3. Down the centuries the basilica and its adjacent monastery became, in fact, an active centre of evan- gelization, thanks to the labours of authentic witnesses of Christ, including the monk St Romuald. In April 1001 he took part in the great assembly of Bishops and dignitaries which Pope Sylvester II held precisely at this church in Classe and which was also attended by Emperor Otto III. It was at that meet- ing that the evangelizing mission to the Slavs was planned and organized, in continuity with all that St Adalbert had accomplished. For this mission three of Romuald's monks were chosen, Bruno, Benedict and John. Sealing their service to the Gospel with martyrdom, they are now venerated as heavenly pro- tectors in both Ravenna and Poland. As your Church thanks God for the good she has spread over the centuries, she is motivated to have a renewed awareness of the ever pressing duty to proclaim the Good News of Christ to those who have not yet heard it. I hope that, through the intercession of the first Bishop and of his fellowcitizen saints who were apostles to the Slavs, numerous priestly and religious vocations will arise in this Church, so that the Word of the Lord will also bring joy and salvation to the men and women of today. 4. Venerable and dear Brother in the Episcopate, in times that were particularly trying and difficult the Church of Ravenna was able to enshrine in her monuments the marvellous greatness of the Gospel message. May her children today find new ways to communicate this message of peace and brother- hood which flow from faith in the one Father and in the one Redeemer. For over 14 centuries, the Basil- ica of St Apollinaris in Classe has transmitted in its splendid mosaics the eternal truth of the Gospel, whose radiant centre is the crucified and risen Christ. How can we not hope that this saving truth will be reflected with renewed vibrance in the Church of "living stones" in Ravenna, so that the new genera- tions can find in Christ that peace which is a gift of God and an expression of his eternal love? I entrust these wishes to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin, so tenderly loved by Ravenna's faithful. May she be for one and all the Queen of peace and mercy! With these sentiments, I impart the favour of my Apostolic Blessing to you, venerable Brother, succes- sor of the Holy Bishop Apollinaris, to my Brother Bishops taking part in the celebrations, to the author- ities, to the clergy, to the beloved people of Ravenna and to all the inhabitants of EmiliaRomagna. La ilustre y antigua archidiócesis de Rávena, que usted guía con celo y sabiduría, se prepara para cele- brar el 1450° aniversario de la dedicación de la basílica de San Apolinar en Classe, consagrada por el arzobispo Maximiano en el año 549, apenas un año después de la dedicación de la basílica de San Vital. Esta celebración cobra una importancia particular, puesto que la basílica, templo de singular belleza, es considerada la cuna de la fe cristiana en esa tierra y conserva el cuerpo del primer obispo, san Apolinar, que evangelizó Rávena durante la segunda mitad del siglo II, y luego se convirtió en patrono de la ciudad, de la diócesis y de toda la región. Desde allí irradió sus últimos resplandores el imperio de Occidente en el período borrascoso de su dramático ocaso; desde allí comenzó la providencial fusión entre las energías jóvenes de los pueblos procedentes del norte de Europa y las riquezas culturales del genio romano; y desde allí se adentraron en la región circunstante los primeros testigos de la fe cristiana. Entre éstos sobresale san Apolinar, primer obispo de la Iglesia de Rávena, quien, con sus esfuerzos y sufrimientos, plantó las sóli- das raíces de la historia cristiana de esa ciudad. 2. Como es sabido, ese insigne monumento sagrado, promovido por el arzobispo Ursicino (535538) y construido bajo la dirección de Giuliano Argentario, mecenas de Rávena, donde estaba el gran puerto romano por eso se le llama en Classe, ofrece a la contemplación de los visitantes, primero, en la corni- sa del arco triunfal, a Cristo que bendice, hacia quien convergen los evangelistas; y luego, en la bóveda, una gran cruz engastada con joyas, en cuyo centro se halla la efigie de Cristo transfigurado y, debajo de ella, entre múltiples representaciones simbólicas, la imagen de san Apolinar en actitud de oración sacer- dotal. Así, al peregrino que cruza su umbral en busca de luz y paz, la basílica, en su misma estructura, sostenida por una espléndida serie de columnas, le señala a Cristo como centro de la fe y respuesta de Dios a las expectativas del corazón inquieto del hombre. La Iglesia de Rávena, sin duda, propondrá de nuevo esta respuesta, que tiene valor perenne, aprovechando las celebraciones programadas, que se ins- criben providencialmente en la preparación del gran jubileo del año 2000, el cual constituirá también para los raveneses una llamada renovada a seguir con valentía a Cristo y escuchar su palabra, prosi- guiendo la feliz y coral respuesta de fe que ha caracterizado siempre su historia. Desde esta perspectiva, espero que la extraordinaria síntesis de fe y belleza realizada hace ya tantos siglos por artistas inspirados evangélicamente en las líneas arquitectónicas del templo y en los mosaicos que lo adornan, suscite en cuantos lo visiten un profundo anhelo de conocer al Señor para testimoniarlo con la palabra y con la vida, a ejemplo del santo obispo Apolinar. 3. De hecho, a lo largo de los siglos, la basílica, con el monasterio anexo, ha sido un centro activo de evangelización, gracias a la labor de auténticos testigos de Cristo, entre ellos el monje san Romualdo. En abril del año 1001 participó en la gran asamblea de obispos y dignatarios, que el Papa Silvestre II cele- bró precisamente en esa basílica, en presencia del emperador Otón III. Durante aquel encuentro se pro- yectó y organizó la misión evangelizadora entre los eslavos, continuando la obra que había llevado a ca- bo san Adalberto. Para dicha misión fueron elegidos los tres monjes romualdinos Bruno, Benito y Juan, los cuales, habiendo coronado con el martirio su servicio al Evangelio, son venerados ahora como pro- tectores celestiales tanto en Rávena como en Polonia. Vuestra Iglesia, al mismo tiempo que da gracias a Dios por el bien que desde ella se ha irradiado en el decurso de los siglos, se siente estimulada a tomar mayor conciencia del deber siempre urgente de llevar el anuncio de Cristo a cuantos aún no lo han recibido. Quiera Dios que, por intercesión de su primer obispo y de sus santos paisanos que fueron Apóstoles de los eslavos, surjan en esa Iglesia numerosas vo- caciones sacerdotales y religiosas, para que la palabra del Señor traiga alegría y salvación también a los hombres de hoy. 4. Venerado y querido hermano en el episcopado, en tiempos particularmente turbulentos y difíciles, la Iglesia de Rávena logró inscribir en sus monumentos la maravillosa grandeza del anuncio evangélico. Ojalá que sus actuales hijos encuentren caminos nuevos para comunicar el mensaje de paz y fraternidad que brota de la fe en el único Padre y en el único Redentor. Desde hace más de catorce siglos la basílica de San Apolinar en Classe transmite en sus espléndidos mosaicos la verdad eterna del Evangelio, que tiene en Cristo crucificado y resucitado su centro de irradiación. ¡Cómo no desear que esa verdad salvífi- ca se refleje con renovada vitalidad en la Iglesia de «piedras vivas» que está en Rávena, para que las nuevas generaciones puedan encontrar en Cristo la paz que es don de Dios y expresión de su amor eterno! Encomiendo estos deseos a la intercesión de la Virgen santísima, tan tiernamente amada por los fieles de Rávena. Que ella sea para todos y cada uno Reina de paz y misericordia.
