Josh King – Director of Percussion Studies Josh King was born in California but raised in various states in the Southeastern U.S. and considers himself a Georgia native. Having worked with a very large variety of concert and marching programs, Josh brings not only knowledge of the craft itself, but a custom- tailored approach that matches all skill levels and abilities of his students. Treating percussion more like a passion and less like a vocation has been the mantra and guiding force behind Josh's time as an instructor, and the only things expected from his students are that an honest effort is made to improve themselves, and that they allow their peers the opportunity to do so in a friendly and productive environment.

After attending high school in South Georgia, Josh went on to Jacksonville State University to be a part of their marching program, as well as a member of their P.A.S.I.C. competition group. During his high school and college years, Josh was not only a member of both Southwind and Spirit of Atlanta drum and bugle corps, but also the WGI group Music City Mystique. While his marching experience helped sculpt him as an instructor, the opportunity to work with many different educational teams along the way is what defined his approach to percussion education.

Although there were many high school and middle school groups that Josh worked with while he was still a performing member of ensembles, the main focus on instruction took place after his performing days were over. These groups include Seminole High School and Tarpon Springs in Florida, as well as Kennesaw Mountain in Georgia. Various other groups have benefited from his involvement, such as Sunlake High School in Tampa whose indoor percussion program was started by Josh and has since gone on to win their class in state competition several times. Along with these scholastic groups, Josh has also been a staff member at Independent World DCI and WGI groups such as Spirit of Atlanta, Crossmen, Cavaliers, Infinity Percussion, STRYKE, Atlanta Quest, and Music City Mystique.

Josh proudly endorses Pearl Drums and Innovative Percussion as a sponsored educational artist.

Brianna Twaddell – Director of Guard Studies Brianna Twaddell is the Director of Color Guards for the River Ridge Marching Knights. She is originally from Los Angeles, California, and moved to Georgia 3 years ago. Brianna began her color guard career performing in middle school and continued to perform consecutively until her age-out year of drum corps in 2015. She toured and competed with multiple groups, including The Bluecoats Drum & Bugle Corps, and The Santa Clara Vanguard Winter Guard. While performing, she received multiple medals, including the WGI World Championship gold medal with The Santa Clara Vanguard in 2015. Before directing at River Ridge, she taught at numerous programs including Ramona High School, Aliso Niguel High School, Olivet Nazarene University, and Woodward Academy. Additionally, she has assisted Atlanta Quest Indoor Drumline with choreography. During her years in the activity, Brianna has acquired a passion for developing the future of the activity and is excited for another year working with The Marching Knights.

Ryan LeQuier – Director of Bands, Mill Creek Middle School Ryan LeQuier is currently serving his second year as Director of Bands at Mill Creek Middle School. Previously, he served as the Assistant Band Director at Mill Creek. Mr. LeQuier holds a Bachelor of Music Education Degree from Auburn University. While at Auburn, he participated in all aspects of the music department including: The Auburn University Marching Band, Symphonic Winds, Concert Band, Jazz Band, Trumpet Ensemble, The Auburn University Community Orchestra, and Men’s Chorus. He studied trumpet under Dr. Mark DeGoti and conducting under Dr. Richard Good. Mr. LeQuier’s professional affiliations include the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), the Georgia Music Educators Association (GMEA), the National Band Association (NBA), and Kappa Kappa Psi. He is still an active trumpet player and currently performs with the Atlanta Wind Symphony. He is also the Choir Director at Rivercliff Lutheran Church in Sandy Springs. He is very excited to continue working with The River Ridge Marching Knights and loves being a part of the River Ridge Zone!

Mike Rostin – Jazz Band Director Mr. Mike Rostin has taught music at many schools in the metro Atlanta, Athens, and Oklahoma City areas. He began his formal music education at the University of Georgia where he received his bachelor’s degree in Music Education with a focus on bass trombone. While at UGA, he marched two seasons with the Redcoat Band on sousaphone and one on trombone, played bass trombone in the UGA Jazz Ensemble, and played four seasons with the UGA Basketball and Volleyball pep bands on drum set. Mr. Rostin also traveled with the UGA Wind Ensemble to Argentina for Argentina's Bicentennial celebrations. Upon graduating, Mr. Rostin has taught Jazz Band and Marching Band at South Forsyth HS, Northview HS, and currently at River Ridge HS. Mr. Rostin marched with Alliance Drum and Bugle Corps for four years, taking first place at the DCA Class A World Championship in 2008. He later taught visual technique and brass fundamentals with Alliance for many years. Mr. Rostin recently received his Master's degree in Educational Leadership from Georgia State. For fun, Mr. Rostin plays in several local jazz bands including the Douglas Cameron Orchestra where he performed with many talented musicians including Brian Littrel (Backstreet Boys) and his son Baylee. He has also recorded multiple albums with Big Band Contractors on bass trombone. Mr. Rostin continues to play jazz with the 3rd Stream Big Band. In his free time, he enjoys working on his 1973 International Scout ii and completing DIY projects around the house. His wife Ashleigh recently had their first baby boy, Beckett, who seems to have good potential as a musician. Mr. Rostin is a proud member of the Athens Sousaphone Society and is a President of the Athens Trombone Association.

Drew Paller – Marching Band Show Designer Andrew Paller is in his fifth year as the Assistant Director of Bands at McCleskey Middle School located in Marietta, Georgia. After receiving his BA in Music Education from Kennesaw State University in 2014, Mr. Paller served as the Assistant Director of Bands at Pine Mountain Middle School located in Kennesaw, Georgia from 2014 to 2016.

While at KSU, Mr. Paller studied Saxophone with Sam Skelton, performed in the university Wind Ensemble, and served as a guest conductor for the university Concert Band. During his time at Pine Mountain Middle School, Mr. Paller was involved in every aspect of the Band Program. While there, Mr. Paller’s ensembles consistently received superior ratings at the GMEA District 12 LGPE and he helped to maintain an overall program enrollment of almost half the school’s student body.

Prior teaching experiences include time spent on staff with the Kell High School and Kennesaw Mountain High School Band Programs where Mr. Paller assisted with their 2010, 2012, 2014, and 2015 Bands of America Regional and National Championship titles.

Aside from his responsibilities at McCleskey, Mr. Paller serves as the Marching Band Program Coordinator for the River Ridge High School Marching Band located in Woodstock, GA, teaches private saxophone lessons, and teaches symphonic and marching camps around the metro Atlanta area. He is also a proud alumni of McCleskey Middle School.

Mr. Paller and his wife Anna live in Kennesaw, Georgia with their daughter Lily and golden retriever, Maggie.

This class emphasizes individual and ensemble practices, musical literacy, music theory, and music history. This course is designed to further student's growth as a musician as well as a young adult. Students will actively participate in class through band class procedures and practices during class/rehearsal time daily. The ensemble will perform both on and off campus several times throughout the academic year. Students will have various after school rehearsals throughout the year. There are typically two rehearsals before a concert with once-a-week rehearsals lasting from January through March.

Prerequisites: Middle school band/private lessons/director placement

Canvas Expectations: http://cherokeek12.net/learning-tools/canvas_parent_account_instructions_updated-july-2017/

Rules and Expectations: 1. Bring Your Learning Device (BYLD): Allowed in class, at the discretion of the director, for tuning, metronome, online submissions. No texting, calling, or web surfing is allowed. 2. Plagiarism: Zero Tolerance. 3. Food and Drink: Water Bottles only; no food, gum, or other beverages unless approved by the director. 4. Always be prepared. Have a pencil, assigned music, book, instrument, and any applicable equipment. 5. Practice. This program can only be successful with individual time practicing on your instrument at home. Practice time is a requirement as well as an expectation. 6. Private lessons are highly encouraged and contribute directly to student success and ensemble success. 7. Be on time. This is a life skill you must develop to be successful, especially in the performing arts. You are tardy if you are not in the classroom when the warm-up begins. The school tardy policy is posted on the RRHS website as well as in the student handbook. 8. Turn in required assignments and/or forms on time! This is part of being a responsible young adult. 9. Do not enter office or music library without permission. 10. Students are expected to arrive promptly to all performance call times. Repeated tardiness may result in the lowering of the concert performance grade.

11 River Ridge High School Band Program– 400 Arnold Mill Road – Woodstock, GA 30188 – Phone: (770) 721-6500 [email protected] / [email protected] / [email protected] www.riverridgebands.org

11. Please use the restroom before or after class. If you must use the restroom, please do so when you or your section is not being addressed. 12. Always give your personal best! You will take away from the ensemble experience only what you are willing to put into it. 13. “3 Rule Concept” –Respect the director’s time, respect each other’s time, respect the music. 14. Concert and Rehearsal Attendance Policy a. This is a Co-Curricular class, and all performances are mandatory. We understand that emergency and special situations will arise, and we will work with you if that happens on a case-by-case basis. Under normal circumstances, failure to attend a performance will seriously impact your grade and may preclude future participation in the River Ridge High School Band Program. Make-up assignments will not be given for unexcused absences. No exceptions will be made. b. Concerts. Band is a co-curricular activity, meaning that some requirements for the class are held outside of the school day. The concert performance is equivalent to a unit exam and is the culminating experience from the work that is done in the classroom. Students are expected to attend all required concerts. c. Rehearsals. Student attendance at after school rehearsals is of the utmost importance to the success of the band program. Being a member of the River Ridge High School Band Program is like being on a team. The team requires every individual to be successful. When one member is missing, the whole team suffers. d. Electing to participate in a performing group includes consistent attendance in both class rehearsal and concert events. Band students must understand and assume the responsibility of these requirements. Talk to your coach, employer, or community leader ahead of time there are no conflicts on these required days. e. Excused absences include a death in the family or extreme illness where you aren’t at school. If you are well enough to attend all your classes, you are well enough to stay for rehearsal. f. Only excused absences will be given a make-up assignment. g. Unexcused absences are conflicts such as failure to arrange transportation, work, entertainment, other school activities, etc.… h. Any conflicts with a rehearsal or concert need to be addressed no later than 2 weeks prior to the date of the rehearsal or concert. Last minute emergencies are understood, and arrangements can be made at the discretion of the director. Failure to communicate conflicts results in multiple problems the day of the concert or rehearsal. Please be respectful of your classmates and director. i. While this policy may seem strict, it is necessary to protect the integrity of the band program. j. Students absent from class during the week leading up to a concert are subject to not performing. k. Students not present in class on the day of the concert are subject to not performing. This will be handled on a case-by-case basis. l. LGPE is mandatory. Only an excused absence discussed ahead of time will be accepted. You will be penalized via your grade as although it’s a field trip, it also is a co-curricular performance. You must be in attendance.

Course Materials: Required Text: Music and all supplemental materials will be provided. Supplies: Musical instruments whether loaned by the school or rented from the student. Pencil, assigned music, applicable equipment.

Class Fee: There is an annual $150 fee for taking this class. Payments may be paid by check to River Ridge Band Boosters. This fee allows the student to ‘rent’ a tuxedo or gown to be worn at concerts for the school year, provided by the River Ridge Band Boosters. Should the student the attire, it will be exchanged for the duration of the year.. This class fee also keeps students from having to rent instruments, and repairs are done without charge to the student if the repair is within normal yearly wear. This fee also helps to pay for busses to LGPE, guest clinicians to come in, and various other costs needed to run such a large program.

Discipline Procedures: Students must be in their seats with their instruments assembled and ready to play 3 minutes after the tardy bell. Failure to follow the above classroom rules and expectations results in a teacher managed infraction. This means that the teacher will assign private detention to the student after school and will call the parent(s)/guardian(s) and notify them about the infraction. This will happen the first three times that a student commits an infraction. On the fourth infraction, the teacher will complete an administrative referral and a member of the administrative team will handle disciplinary actions from there. NOTE: Failure to serve a detention will result in an immediate administrative referral.

FINANCIAL POLICIES & PROCEDURES

To Make Payments: Checks may be made payable to “River Ridge Band Boosters” and submitted into the blue box in the band room that is right outside the band director’s office. In addition, electronic payments may be made in Charms at www.charmsoffice.com.

Failure to Pay Agreed Amounts on Time: The River Ridge Band Boosters is made of various families who all appreciate the significant financial commitment required to provide our kids the opportunity to participate in the various band programs, including Color Guard. That is why a payment plan is offered. We also realize that life doesn’t stop, and other priorities demand our financial attention (e.g., medical bills, home, and car repairs). If something comes up and you find yourself in a financial dilemma that will result in a missed payment(s) under the terms set herein, please reach out to us as soon as you know you may miss a scheduled payment. But do not wait longer than five (5) business days of the missed payment’s due date. By contacting the treasurer of the Band Boosters or the Band Director, you may be able to make arrangements to catch up on payments or reschedule payments for a later date. Communication is key. A failure to communicate in a timely manner with a lack of effort to meet your financial obligations will be the reason for your student falling out of good standing. Falling out of good standing with the terms herein may also result in the inability to enter into a payment plan in future years and may have an immediate effect on your child’s involvement with the Program. Falling out of good standing may mean that your student will not be allowed to travel to away games, travel to competitions, be provided pre-game meals, or may even be removed from the Program for which this financial agreement has been arranged. If an amount remains owing after the conclusion of the Program’s season, the difference will be required to be paid prior to Student’s involvement in subsequent years. Students must pay all outstanding band fees to participate in graduation ceremonies, receive their diplomas and purchase parking passes. These outstanding fees are equivalent to students having outstanding library fees or unreturned textbooks. All delinquent fees lacking payment arrangements will be reported to the RRHS administration.

What if my Student Quits? There are no refunds for amounts already paid and the amounts stated above are still owed. If an amount remains unpaid and the Student wants to join the Program in any subsequent year, the outstanding balance will be required to be paid in addition to the annual dues for that year prior to your child’s future involvement. It will be determined at that time if you would be allowed to enter into another payment plan with the Band Boosters.

Financial Hardship: The Cherokee County School District and River Ridge High School policies guide us in all such matters. From the CCSD Athletic Handbook: “Addressing Financial Hardship” No student will be prevented from participating in a sport/activity due to financial hardship. Because it is important to protect the privacy of students relative to financial hardship, each school must develop protocol to insure confidentiality. Such protocol may include, but is not limited to the following: ● Student and/or parent/guardian contacts the head coach/sponsor. ● The head coach/sponsor discusses the situation with the school’s athletic director. ● The school’s athletic director determines the appropriate course of action (i.e., develop a payment plan, ask for assistance from the booster club, etc.) ● The head coach contacts the student and/or parent/guardian to review and explain any accommodations or actions approved. The Band Boosters protocol: In cases of financial hardship, any needy student may contact Mr. Amend privately in order to obtain a scholarship application. The application must be turned in by the due date. Applications will be reviewed by an independent panel of three River Ridge High School teachers. The panel will decide to award partial or full scholarships to students. Mr. Amend or the Treasurer of the Band Boosters will communicate with families the decision of the panel. In order to qualify for a scholarship all past fees must be paid in full and a $100 deposit must be made with the application.

REHEARSAL ATTENDANCE POLICY

This rehearsal policy is applicable to all ensembles under the River Ridge Band Program. For all ensembles under the umbrella of the River Ridge Band Program, students must submit all absence requests BEFORE THE FIRST REHEARSAL OF THE ENSEMBLE.

Ensembles include but are not limited to concert band, marching band, jazz band, symphony orchestra, winter guard, etc. In order for any of the ensembles to be successful within the River Ridge Band Program, it is imperative that students understand that participating in an ensemble is a team effort contingent upon the presence of all participants. Students are to be present at every rehearsal, allowing the ensemble to be successful in experiencing efficient, positive, and meaningful rehearsals as well as performances. Any absences once the season has started should be emailed directly to the Director of Bands.

1. All band members are expected to check the River Ridge Band website and/or band calendar often for updates and to know when all events are scheduled. The website address is: www.riverridgebands.org and updated regularly and often months in advance. 2. With marching band, all members are expected to attend both weeks of band camp. No exceptions will be made without direct permission from the Director of Bands. 3. All performances are mandatory. Any absences from a performance, including a Friday night performance or a competition may result in immediate removal from the program. Any such conflicts must be turned in before the seasons begin and agreed to in writing by both the student and the director. 4. A single unexcused absence from a rehearsal or performance may result in the student being removed immediately from the River Ridge Marching Band a. In the event that a member misses a rehearsal, the absence will be categorized as either an excused or unexcused absence. 5. Any conflicts that arise during the season must be discussed with Mr. Amend. 6. A note on homework: Being a part of the River Ridge Band Program is not mandatory for a student to graduate from high school, and therefore is an elected privilege by the student. Members of the River Ridge Band Program are expected to maintain good grades, while simultaneously participating in the band in its full capacity. It is important that members of the band stay on top of their homework, and various other assignments so that a conflict does not arise. Students who miss rehearsals due to homework will be removed from the ensemble. Plan your homework and assignments ahead. Additionally, the 5pm start time for marching band allows students one hour and 45 minutes to study before practice. 7. Students who are removed from the program (or quit) for attendance or behavior issues may not be allowed to return to the program in seasons that follow. 8. All marching band participation fees, concert band participation fees, uniform accessory payments, and/or additional item purchases are not refundable. a. In the event a student quits, is removed from the program, moves, transfers schools, etc., your payment will be considered a contribution to River Ridge Band Boosters, Inc. and used to help recover lost funds caused by your student’s remaining dues not being paid.

MARCHING UNIFORM POLICY

The marching band uniform is an important part of the River Ridge Marching Band and helps set band members apart as we represent the band program and River Ridge as a whole. The uniform is a significant part of the team spirit that characterizes the marching band. We hope that students will take special pride in their distinction. By accepting a uniform, you are accepting the responsibility of taking care of them. Uniforms will be kept at school to help minimize long-term loss and allow for periodic and necessary cleaning.

Marching Band Brass/Woodwind/Percussion uniforms include a garment bag, jacket, bibber pants, 2 gauntlets, a shako, and a storage box. All uniform parts are rented and not property of the student. Damaged or lost uniform parts will be charged to the student, just as a textbook or other school property would be.

Uniforms will be fitted and/or assigned to each member during band camp ONLY after the receipt of the first participation fee payment. Uniforms will be stored and maintained in the band uniform room. This is where students will pick up their uniforms prior to each performance. There is a specific procedure for this process. Students will dress at River Ridge High School and wear their uniform on the bus unless otherwise instructed.

After performances, the uniform must be correctly placed on the matching, numbered hangers, and rehung in the correct location in the uniform room. Students will not take the uniform home unless otherwise instructed.

Hair color and makeup must be natural colors only.

INSTRUMENTAL RENTAL POLICY

We understand that many if not most students are not able to own certain instruments that are used within the band program. Students who during the school days play the oboe, bass clarinet, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone, bassoon, horn, trombone, euphonium, and tuba are able to use a school owned instrument.

Students who play the flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, and trumpet will be responsible for providing their own instruments. Students can easily rent instruments from a local music store or purchase their own instrument. Before purchasing a new instrument, please consult a band director, staff member, or private lessons teacher to make sure you are purchasing an instrument of quality.

If a student chooses to check out a school owned instrument, they must complete the River Ridge Instrument Check Out Form that can be found within the “FORMS” portion of the handbook. These instruments will be checked out at the beginning of every marching band season and/or school year. Instruments will then be checked back in at the end of the marching band season and/or school year. Students must submit documentation before checking out the instrument. This documentation must contain a parent/guardian signature. Minor wear and tear and minor repairs are covered by the River Ridge Band Booster as part of the Band Class Fee. The instruments must be returned in the same relative condition it was checked out.

Students however are responsible for any major repair should it be the fault of the student such as dropping the instrument, placing it down incorrectly, or leaving it in an unsafe environment. If an instrument is stolen off campus and a student is not on a band related field trip or event, the student is ultimately responsible for the purchase of a new instrument of the same model. A police report may be filed with the documented model type and serial number. This does not happen often but must be considered.

Remember, some of these instruments can be equivalent to a down payment of a car or many months of paying a mortgage. Please treat them with the utmost care and respect so they may last for many years to come.

SECTION 3: PARENTS GETTING INVOLVED

A successful band program needs all-hands-on-deck! Whether you can come and help at the school or prefer to be behind the scenes doing things, we have a team for you!

Volunteering is another integral part of the band program. It is expected that each family donates a minimum 30 hours total of their time for the school year. This 30 hours of volunteer time is for the entire band program. You may donate requested items to the program -every $10 spent counts as one hour of volunteer time. Write your name on your receipt and submit it to the board at the time of your donation.

BAND BOOSTER VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

CHAPERONE COMMITTEE: chaperones are needed to help with student supervision during football games, marching competitions, festivals, band camp & other band activities. The committee also makes sure that the band area is set up and secure for home games along with making sure that water is available for band members. Chaperones/Parent help is also needed at weekly rehearsals. The responsibilities for the afternoon rehearsals are setting up the shade tent, making sure extra water and the sports drink cooler is set up as well as taking care of any band members that become ill during rehearsal.

EQUIPMENT/ “ROADIE” CREW: The Roadie parents are a vital part of the student Marching Band experience. Roadies work with the director to construct the props used in our competitive marching shows. They are in charge of making sure all equipment and props needed for our performances are in place, in good repair, and transported correctly and in a timely manner.

FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE: This committee plans and oversees fundraising efforts for capital budget items (like new uniforms, band tower, storage facility etc.) They work in conjunction with the Board of Directors. This committee needs dynamic and energetic people with skills in marketing, sales, fundraising and project management.

COLOR GUARD/WINTER GUARD LIAISON COMMITTEE: The Color guard Liaison is usually a Guard Mom or Guard Mom and Dad that help facilitate organizational needs for the Color Guard. The Liaison will work with the Color guard Instructor and Faculty Sponsor to assign volunteers to take care of uniform adjustments, flag sewing, floor construction and transportation for the winter season.

HOME CONCESSIONS COMMITTEE: Recruits volunteers to serve in the concession stand during home football games, festivals & special events. Oversees purchase of all inventory & supplies for the concession stand. Solicits donation of food items for the concession stand & special events. Sets prices for items to be sold, takes inventory, counts receipts & turns in proceeds for deposit to the Treasurer following each game or event. Keeps inventory records of items purchased & amount of profit.

HOSPITALITY COMMITTEE: The Hospitality Committee is a group of parents that make sure that any food or snack items for the band are arranged and supplied within the expectations of the Directors and band schedule. The main focus of the group is the Band Camp meals as well as the Friday evening Pre-Game meals. Other treats such as ice cream, watermelon; etc. can be organized and done within the schedule of camp and weekly band rehearsals. When the band travels on competition trips whether it is local or over-night, there will be times where the committee will need to organize a meal or a snack time at a rehearsal site. There are also hospitality rooms set up for competitions and exhibitions that we host here at RRHS that fall under the direction and organization of this committee.

SPIRIT WEAR COMMITTEE: This committee works with our vendors to facilitate ordering and distribution of spirit wear items. They also work closely with the directors and clinicians to help create and produce the current year’s competitive show shirt design.

UNIFORM COMMITTEE: This committee makes sure the band LOOKS as good as it SOUNDS! It is responsible for issuing all uniforms before marching season. The volunteers assist with fittings & alterations that involve sewing and creative stitching for all areas of the program, marching, concert and color guard/winter guard. Other responsibilities include ensuring that every student has everything needed to complete his/her uniform prior to a performance as well as ordering shoes and gloves for the marching band.

SECTION 4: MARCHING BAND

WHY DO MARCHING BAND?

The answer, of course, varies among individuals, but for most, it can be summarized by saying that marching band offers students a combination of benefits and fulfillment that they have been unable to find in other activities.

Some find acceptance for the first time. In marching band, nobody cares about your status, how you look, what you wear, whether you are a gifted musician, as long as you give your best. Some thrill to the style of music and marching and to the constant physical and mental exertion to reach perfection, both as an individual and as a team.

Some thrive on the challenge and pressure of competition and the sweet taste of victory. Still others enjoy the opportunity to entertain. For them, the ultimate goal is to bring pleasure to others and the ultimate reward is the thunderous applause that acknowledges their success.

For all, the Marching Band means deep and lasting friendship, not only with other River Ridge Band members; but, with all marching band members everywhere. Band members form a closely-knit fraternity. All have undergone similar experiences and emotions; all know the intense effort and sacrifices, the discipline, and the bursting pride that comes from doing even better than you thought you could. Many people participate in worthwhile activities devoted to music, social development, competitive sports, or companionship, but few are fortunate enough to find the best aspects of all combined in one. Marching Knight band members are among these few.

Why the Marching Band? Because it's more than a way to spend time, it's a way of growing up. It's a way that requires absolute dedication, self-sacrifice, subordination of individual desires, physical and mental endurance under adverse conditions. But if a band member gives his or her best, the reward is the chance to set a goal, then to strive to exceed it, the opportunity to develop leadership potential while functioning as a part of a team, the pride that comes from achievement and the warmth that comes from friendships.

Nobody ever said that being a member of the Marching Knights is the easiest way to grow up, but many people believe it's the best.

36 River Ridge High School Band Program– 400 Arnold Mill Road – Woodstock, GA 30188 – Phone: (770) 721-6500 [email protected] / [email protected] / [email protected] www.riverridgebands.org

Most frequently asked questions about the River Ridge “Marching Knights”

1. Do I have to be in marching band to be in a band class? The simple answer to this question is "no." However, most students will choose to participate in the marching band as well as the concert band program. The marching band activity is a terrific opportunity to learn a great deal about music and about you. Students often build great friendships through their participation in the marching band. It's a great way to have a place to belong and to get to know a lot of people in a short amount of time. What's more, besides hard work, marching band is a lot of fun!! Ask anyone who has been in the Marching Knights!

2. Can I be in other activities and be in the band? Of course! We encourage all of our students to explore their options in high school. Several of our band students participate in various school athletic organizations as well as clubs, and even other musical organizations. Band students participate in soccer, cross-country, baseball, basketball, cheerleading, track, chorus, Model UN, and many other non-band activities. The only conflicting activities with marching band are softball, football, and varsity cheerleading.

3. Do I have to take private lessons to be in the band? Private lessons are the most efficient way of improving on your instrument. Through private study, a professional on your instrument works with you on a one-to-one basis to hear you play and give you tips for improvement. Unlike getting help from a teacher when your math or English grade is low, private lessons enhance and enable the musical progress of every level student. You can improve as an individual much faster through private study and band rather than just band alone. However, it is not a requirement to take private lessons. It is only highly recommended!

4. High school is hard. Will I be able to do band and maintain good grades? Yes. There certainly are challenges and academic demands in high school. Band students have consistently ranked amongst the highest achieving students academically for decades! Many band students are members of the National Honor Society, they make up a significant portion of National Merit Scholars from the school, and they are frequently selected as Star Students. Somewhere near 80% of the band students maintain a 3.0 GPA (B average). It is not uncommon for the class valedictorian to be in the band! So, you can see, it is possible to maintain good grades and participate in the band program. You may have to work for it, but anything worth having is worth working for, right??!! IT CAN BE DONE!

5. How do the older students treat the freshmen? The upperclassmen in the band program see themselves as leaders and mentors for freshmen. They have been through what the freshmen go through, and they are there to help and to show them the ropes. You will find the older students to be bright and helpful.

6. What if I don't play that well? The Marching Knight Band has a place for anyone who commits to being a part of an excellent organization. Because we are able to have various classes based on playing ability, there is a class for everyone who plays an instrument. We teach to whatever level you are currently at, and we help you to achieve the next level. That's exactly why we're here! You shouldn't be intimidated by the success the program has had. The River Ridge Band Program is made up of people just like you-people who enjoy playing an instrument and are willing to work hard at improving each day.

7. How can I be in marching band if I play the oboe or bassoon? There are several instruments that we do not use on the marching field for various reasons. However, we CAN find a place for you in the marching band. Because the fingering systems are so similar, we often have oboists who march flute or saxophone, and our bassoonists usually march tenor saxophone or baritone saxophone. There is also the possibility of playing in the pit percussion if the double reed player has any piano experience. We like to keep our double reed players involved in the marching band!

8. I hear that the marching band rehearses all of the time. How much time does the band actually take? We do a great deal of band rehearsal in the summer before school starts so that we won't be as busy once the school year begins. However, we normally do have rehearsals for 3 hours each Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from August through October. During the fall, you will also have football games on Friday evenings. The after-school rehearsals enable us to spend time developing our ensemble skills, which is what makes us have a strong program!!

9. If I don't sign up for band now, can I join my sophomore year? Most students sign up for band their freshmen year and they love it so much that they stay in it for all four years! If a student does not participate their freshmen year, they will miss a year of musical ensemble development. It would make it extremely difficult to redevelop your musical skills after taking a year off. Rather, we encourage you to sign up for your freshman year, give it a shot, and see how it goes. As mentioned earlier, when most students do this, they're very glad that they did!

10. How can I take band for four years in high school and still complete all of my college entrance requirements? It is very difficult these days to fulfill all of the foreign language, math, and science requirements for college. However, it CAN BE DONE! With proper planning and good advice, your schedule can be put together throughout your four years in high school to make it work for you! Keep in mind that your freshman year, AP World Geography is not required. According to State requirements, all students must take 1/2 credit (1 semester) of fine arts. Taking band class your first semester in high school will fulfill this requirement, and every student needs this credit. A typical schedule for a high school freshman would include English, Math, Science, History, Foreign Language or another elective, and band.

11. What if I don't go to Band Camp? All students are expected to attend all summer rehearsals and camp. There are times when conflicts cannot be avoided, and these will be handled on an individual basis. Students are required to attend the summer Band Camp. This band performs music and marching formations of intricate design and with high individual demand, and it would be impossible to make up for the hours of rehearsal at Band Camp.

12. How do I register for band class? Course names and numbers will be given to your school and will be the same for all freshmen. Freshmen woodwind, brass, and percussion classes will be offered. Oboe and bassoon players should register for the woodwind class, regardless of what they play to participate in marching band.
