The hearing had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. 23 people spoke in favor of designation, including representatives of Congressman Charles B. Rangel, Manhattan Borough President Gale A. Brewer, Community Board 10, the Historic Districts Council, the Landmarks Conservancy, Mount Morris Park Community Improvement Association, Save Harlem Now, The Society for the Architecture of the City, Former Landmarks Preservation Commission Chair, Gene A. Norman, numerous home owners in the Mount Morris Park Historic District Extension, the Real Estate Board of New York, testified in support of designation, but questioned the inclusion of certain buildings, and the Commission received a letter City Council Member Inez E. Dickens, and statement of support from the New York City Parks Department. Two people spoke in opposition to designation. The LGBTQ movement for civil rights has given rise to related activity in the cultural sphere aimed at recovering the long history of same- sex relationships, understanding the social construction of gender and sexual norms, and documenting the rise of movements for LGBTQ rights in American history.

It is a change that comes on the heels of our separation New York@Night last summer from the AllAboutJazz.com website. To emphasize that split, we felt 4 it was time to come out, as it were, with our own unique identity. So in that sense, a name is very important. Introduction: This tour was developed by the Department of City Planning as part of its Malcolm X Boulevard Streetscape Enhancement Project. The project, which extends from West 110th to West 147th Street, seeks to complement the ongoing capital improvements for Malcolm X Boulevard and take advantage of the growing tourist interest in Harlem. The project proposes a program of streetscape and pedestrian space improvements, including new pedestrian lighting, new sidewalk and median landscaping and the provision of pedestrian amenities, such as seating and pergolas. The Department has been working with Cityscape Institute, the Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone, the New York City Department of Transportation, and the Department of Design and Construction, and has received implementation funds totaling $1.2 million through the federal TEA21 Enhancement Funding program for the proposed pedestrian lighting improvements. As one element of the project, the Department developed this guided tour of the boulevard and neighboring blocks. The tour provides an overview of local area history, and highlights architecturally significant and landmarked buildings, noteworthy cultural and ecclesiastical institutions and other points of interest. A listing of former famous jazz clubs, such as the Cotton Club and Savoy Ballroom, is also provided. Envisioned as an information resource for residents and visitors, the tour is also available in printable text format for use as a hand-held guide for a self-guided walking tour along the boulevard.

They believed it should be easy for even the busiest New Yorker to volunteer in a meaningful way, and so, they created an organization which allows everyone to come together to help those who need it most. We’ve come a long way since 1987. That first year, we ran a few dozen projects. Today, we plan and fill as many as 1,500 projects every month. The 100+ volunteers who comprised our earliest corps now number 56,000 annually. Initially run by our founders, New York Cares is now staffed by a team of 80 professionals. And while we are still grassroots in action, we are also on speed dial at City Hall and the go-to organization for our city’s most civic-minded corporations. In 2012, New York Cares’ prowess at mobilizing volunteers took on new meaning. On October 30th, as soon as the waters from Hurricane Sandy had receded, our staff were on the frontlines of the response, assessing needs and planning volunteer projects to meet those needs. The 13,500 volunteers we deployed in November and December were a constant and reassuring presence in the hardest hit communities, where they knocked on thousands of doors to check on residents, distributed warm winter coats and served hot meals, provided translation services for isolated homebound seniors, mucked out flood-damaged residences, and much more.

Croes, landscape engineer Landmark Site: Borough of Staten Island, Tax Map Block 934, Lot 250 in part, consisting of the entire mausoleum, its steps, and retaining walls; the hillock enclosing the mausoleum; the terrace in front of the mausoleum’s main facade and the base and walls of the terrace; the pathway leading from the terrace northeasterly, southeasterly, southwesterly, and southeasterly, beneath the arch near the southernmost entrance to the lot, to the lot boundary; the entrance arch and gates, and the adjoining stone retaining walls extending from the south face and sides of the arch northeasterly and southwesterly to the north and south lot lines; the stone retaining walls extending from the north face of the arch along both sides of a portion of the pathway; the land beneath the opening in the entrance arch; and the land upon which these improvements are sited. On September 9, 1980, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the Vanderbilt Mausoleum and Cemetery and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 5). The hearing had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. A representative of the trustees overseeing the property testified in opposition to the proposed designation. A representative of New Dorp Moravian Church also testified in opposition to the proposed designation. Two people spoke in favor of the proposed designation, including a representative of the Preservation League of Staten Island.

There were twenty-one speakers in favor of designation, including the legal representative of the Archdiocese of New York, Councilmember Bill Perkins, Congressman Charles Rangel, Former Chair of the Landmarks Preservation Commission, Gene Norman, the pastor of the Church, Rev. Neil O’Connell, the Chairperson of Community Board 9, numerous parishioners and representatives of various organizations including, Landmarks West, the Victorian Society, the Landmarks Conservancy, the Municipal Arts Society, the Morningside Heights Historic District, the Society for the Architecture of the City, and the Historic Districts Council. There was one speaker opposed to designation and three speakers who did not take a position. In addition the Commission has received a letter from New York State Senator David Patterson in support of designation. The Commission previously held a public hearing on this church on June 14, 1966.
