With its close proximity to Midtown Manhattan, multiple express transportation options and numerous national retailers, 125th Street has become the epicenter of Harlem and Northern Manhattan. 125th Street is bound by the RFK Bridge to the east and Columbia University on its far west, making it the most major thoroughfare uptown. The two way through-block is slated for around 15 million square feet of new development of all asset classes. Harlem has become a hotspot for residential and commercial development. 125th Street in particular was rezoned to further incentivize new investment and further growth in the neighborhood. 2033 Fifth Avenue lies right where Central and East Harlem meet. This area is home to numerous parks, restaurants, museums and more. Restaurants include Sylvia’s, Red Rooster, Rao’s, Harlem Shake, Corner Social, Lenox Lounge, etc. In addition to the National Black Theatre, 125th street boasts the Apollo Theater, Victoria Theater, The National Jazz Museum and The Studio Museum amongst others. This culture rich area has created an environment rich for new residents and investments. 13 THE NEIGHBORHOOD THE NEIGHBORHOOD 14 32-42 WEST 125TH STREET TRANSPORTATION MAP 125TH STREET 1 4 M A C B D 2 N 5 125TH STREET R 3 6 Travel Times: COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 15 4 5 6 min to Grand Central via 10 min to Grand Central via Metro North 20 1 2 3 min to Times Square via 25 B D min to Bryant Park via 2nd Avenue Subway Expansion Subway 2nd Avenue 96TH STREET Q 96TH STREET 86TH STREET 72ND STREET COLUMBUS CIRCLE 59TH STREET 20 15 TIMES SQUARE min min GRAND CENTRAL 15 THE NEIGHBORHOOD THE NEIGHBORHOOD 16 32-42 WEST 125TH STREET COMPARABLE SALES MAP West Harlem Hamilton Heights West Harlem is a neighborhood located in Manhattan Hamilton Heights is a sub-neighborhood in West Harlem (Part of Community Board 9) overlooking the Hudson bordered by Manhattanville to the South, Central Harlem River and bordering the Upper West Side, Central Harlem, to the East, and Washington Heights to the North.

BROOKLYN TRANSIT PRIMARY SOURCE PACKET Student Name 1 2 INTRODUCTORY READING "New York City Transit - History and Chronology." Mta.info. Metropolitan Transit Authority. Web. 28 Dec. 2015. Adaptation In the early stages of the development of public transportation systems in New York City, all operations were run by private companies. Abraham Brower established New York City's first public transportation route in 1827, a 12-seat stagecoach that ran along Broadway in Manhattan from the Battery to Bleecker Street. By 1831, Brower had added the omnibus to his fleet. The next year, John Mason organized the New York and Harlem Railroad, a street railway that used horse-drawn cars with metal wheels and ran on a metal track. By 1855, 593 omnibuses traveled on 27 Manhattan routes and horse-drawn cars ran on street railways on Third, Fourth, Sixth, and Eighth Avenues. Toward the end of the 19th century, electricity allowed for the development of electric trolley cars, which soon replaced horses. Trolley bus lines, also called trackless trolley coaches, used overhead lines for power. Staten Island was the first borough outside Manhattan to receive these electric trolley cars in the 1920s, and then finally Brooklyn joined the fun in 1930. By 1960, however, motor buses completely replaced New York City public transit trolley cars and trolley buses. The city's first regular elevated railway (el) service began on February 14, 1870. The El ran along Greenwich Street and Ninth Avenue in Manhattan. Elevated train service dominated rapid transit for the next few decades. On September 24, 1883, a Brooklyn Bridge cable-powered railway opened between Park Row in Manhattan and Sands Street in Brooklyn, carrying passengers over the bridge and back.

3.0 LAND USE AND ZONING Zoning The city is divided into three basic zoning districts: residential (R), commercial (C), and manufacturing (M). The three basic categories are further subdivided into lower, medium, and higher density residential, commercial and manufacturing districts. Development within these districts is regulated by use, building size, and parking regulations. Here is a brief description of the three basic zoning districts according to the Zoning Handbook: Residential District (R) In New York City, there are ten standard residential districts, R1 through R10. The numbers refer to the permitted density (R1 having the lowest density and R10 the highest) and other controls such as required parking. A second letter or number signifies additional controls are required in certain districts. R1 and R2 districts allow only detached single-family residences and certain community facilities. The R3-2 through R10 districts accept all types of dwelling units and community facilities and are distinguished by differing bulk and density, height and setback, parking, and lot coverage or open space requirements. Commercial District (C) The commercial districts reflect the full range of commercial activity in the city from local retail and service establishmentsDRAFT to high density, shopping, entertainment and office uses. There are eight basic commercial districts where two (C1 and C2 districts) are designed to serve local needs, one district (C4) is for shopping centers outside the central business district, two (C5 and C6 districts) are for the central business districts which embrace the office, retail, and commercial functions that serve the city and region, and three (C3, C7, and C8 districts) are designed for special purposes (waterfront activity, large commercial amusement parks and heavy repair services).

  • Washington Heights Community Directory
Washington Heights Community Resource Directory New York State Psychiatric Institute Center of Excellence for Cultural Competence May 2008 Community Profile: Washington Heights and Inwood A survey of New York City residents found that people who report having significant emotional distress are more likely to engage in unhealthy behaviors, such as getting no exercise, binge drinking, smoking, and eating a poor diet. Similarly, New Yorkers with significant emotional distress experience high rates of chronic illness, such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, obesity, asthma, and diabetes. An added difficulty is that neighborhoods in New York with the lowest incomes often have the highest rates of significant emotional distress, often adding to the burden on these already underserved communities (New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, 2003). The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) has conducted a number of community health surveys to assess the health and well-being of New Yorkers. Here, we present some of the factors important to the physical and mental health of the communities of Washington Heights and Inwood, to serve as background for the services listed in this directory. Washington Heights and Inwood: The population of Inwood and Washington Heights (I/WH) at the 2000 census was 270,700. More than half of the residents of these communities (51%) were born outside the United States, compared to 36% for New York City as a whole. Figure 1 shows the countries of origin for foreign-born members of Community District 12 (which is made up of Inwood and Washington Heights), while Table 1 lists foreign-born residents by country of origin.

The redesigned map should be practical and able to be used in the real world. My choice on the New York State Park is the Central Park in Manhatten New York. I Chose Central Park because of my own experience. As a first time visitor in New York last year, I visited Central Park with my cousin who has been living in NewYork for seven years. While I was doing my research, I did not find any map for first-time visitors from the central park official website. If I were on my own while I first visited Central Park, I would not be able to know where to begin my visit. I am sure that the other first-time visitors would have the same problem. These are the reasons that my map is designed for first-time visitors who have a limited amount of time. In my map, I featured several top attractions in and around the park. I also included some top-rated restaurants around and inside the park since Knowing where to consume good food is essential during visiting.
