NOTESVOLUME 17, NUMBER 3, FALL 2010 FROM THE HEAD LIBRARIAN Though people who know me realize I am more of a cat person, I do love the fact that working at the Society Library means meeting some lovely creatures of the canine variety. I hope you all enjoy the collection of photos of the Library’s furry friends on pages 4-6. As Circulation Supervisor Patrick Rayner will remind you, you can bring your dog into the Library while you drop off your returns, pick up books on hold, or get the latest New Books list at the front desk. RENOVATION UPDATE AND REMINDERS TO MEMBERS We made it. With the exception of some final tweaks to the handicapped accessibility at the front entrance and touch-ups to the fifth floor, the renovation is complete. Our first issue of Library Notes in the new year will be a full-color feature issue with photos and narrative about the renovation this summer and fall. At this time of writing, Renovation Projects Librarian Andrew Corbin is preparing this report for Notes. I did want to take a moment to make a few announcements to all members who frequent the renovated fifth floor: — We make the fifth floor study rooms available for five bookings at a time. Ask at the front desk and they’ll explain the booking system in detail. — The heating and cooling system is operational on the fifth floor. During the cooler days of winter, we will set the temperature at 72. We apologize in advance if there is some variance in comfort between the open space of the Hornblower Room and the study rooms. -

The estate is on the high ridge that forms the northern edge of Georgetown. Dumbarton Oaks Park, which was separated from the formal gardens when it was given to the National Park Service, consists of 27.04 acres designed as the "naturalistic" component of a total composition which included the mansion and the formal gardens. The park is located north of and below the mansion and the terraced formal gardens and focuses on a stream valley sometimes called "The Branch" (i.e., of Rock Creek) nearly 100' below the mansion. North of the stream the park rises again in a northerly and westerly direction toward the U.S. Naval Observatory. The primary access to the park is from R Street between the Dumbarton Oaks estate and Montrose Park along a small lane presently called Lovers' Lane. Present Owner; Dumbarton Oaks Park is a Federal park, owned and maintained by the National Park Service of the Department of the Interior. Dates of Construction: Dumbarton Oaks estate was acquired by Robert Woods Bliss and Mildred Barnes Bliss in 1920. At their request, Beatrix Jones Farrand, a well- known American landscape architect, agreed to undertake the design and oversee the maintenance of the grounds. -

A Chronology of 125Th Street
125th Street Chronology • 16th Century Native Americans inhabit summer village at what is now East 125th Street and the Harlem River. • 1609 Henry Hudson trades with Native Americans off the Manhattanville shoreline. • 1658 Pieter Stuyvesant founds the village of Nieuw Haarlem, part of which occupies the land at what would later become East 125th Street between First and Second avenues. • 1776 George Washington defeats the British in the Battle of Harlem Heights, driving the enemy south across what was then called the Hollow Way, later known ofOicially as West 125th Street. • 1806 Village of Manhattanville founded at an inlet along the Hudson River at what will soon become West 125th Street. 1811 The Randel Plan proposes a grid of streets blanketing Manhattan, including an East-West thoroughfare along a geological fault line thereafter known as 125th Street. • 1813 125th Street opens as one of Manhattan’s 15 major cross-town streets • 1814 Regular ferry service begins along the Harlem River from East 125th Street to downtown. • 1850s The public school at East 125th Street and Second Avenue admits it Oirst African-American student. • 1863-1872 Artist Thomas Nast plots the downfall of the Tweed Ring from his backyard studio at Fifth Avenue and 125th Street. • 1869 A group of German Jews relocates from the Lower East Side to East 125th Street and Third Avenue, establishing the core of uptown’s Jewish community. • 1889 Oscar Hammerstein opens the Harlem Opera House at 211 West 125th Street, paving the way for 125th Street’s development as an entertainment district. • 1904 The Interborough Rapid Transit’s Broadway line opens in Upper Manhattan, spanning West 125th Street with a viaduct featuring a 168.5-foot parabolic arch. -
