Antes de desenvolverem capacidades de expressão mediante a linguagem falada, utilizaram partes de seu corpo para expor seus estados de ânimos, desejos e inquietudes que, com o tempo, converteram-na em modelos de comunicação – a raiz do design gráfico. Mesmo que a linguagem falada tenha predominado como meio de comunicação, a linguagem visual continuou tendo um importante papel nas relações sociais, principalmente pela utilização de materiais como métodos para “modelar” mensagens visuais, como mostram diversos desenhos em pedras e pinturas rupestres que estudamos, nas quais expõem elementos naturais, atividades do cotidiano e diferentes signos. A expressão de ideias através de formas gráficas se deu por conta do aparecimento da linguagem escrita, que permitia representações de pensamentos mediante um conjunto de elementos gráficos que ordenados, eram capazes de transmitir mensagens que seriam entendidas pela comunidade. Estas linguagens baseavam-se na exposição de símbolos: os alfabetos. Cada um desses símbolos, quando isolados, possuíam um significado incompreensível, entretanto, unidos um ao outro, representavam graficamente a linguagem falada por cada povo ou cultura. Inicialmente a pedra era utilizada como instrumento portador de mensagem, todavia, foram buscados outros materiais que eram mais acessíveis e possuíam maior portabilidade, como os papiros, peles ou pergaminhos. Também passaram a aplicar distintos pigmentos naturais para dar cor e expressão às obras escritas e desenhos e a dispor os diferentes elementos textuais e gráficos de forma harmoniosa e equilibrada. Isto pode ser apreciado na confecção dos incunábulos feitos nos monastérios e se observava com clareza a importância da organização visual para transmitir uma mensagem. 9 A HISTÓRIA DO DESIGN GRÁFICO - RESUMO Posteriormente, Johann Gutenberg deu origem a imprensa, que traz um método de reprodução em grandes quantidades e de forma cômoda, o que possibilitou que documentos e mensagens fossem passados para um grande número de pessoas. Foram inaugurados novos materiais como suporte, novas tintas e tipos de letras, começando o aparecimento de profissionais especializados em seu manejo: os tipógrafos e impressores e os primeiros designers gráficos, encarregados de construir fontes para a construção de materiais que formavam um layout harmonioso. Outro fator que levou ao desenvolvimento do design gráfico foi a Revolução Industrial. Surgiram fábricas e o mercado. Um grande número de pessoas se deslocou para às cidades a procura de trabalho, o número de lojas e comércios foi ampliado. Com isso, desenvolveu-se uma técnica comercial, a publicidade, que tinha como objetivo convencer os consumidores que determinado produto era vantajoso em relação aos demais. A expansão da publicidade foi acompanhada pelo desenvolvimento do design gráfico e dos suportes de comunicação. Para cumprir com o objetivo citado acima, eram necessárias mensagens concisas, carregadas de componentes psicológicos, com ilustrações cada vez mais desenvolvidas, chegando ao maior número possível de pessoas. Em 1888, os trabalhos de Arts & Crafts, criado na Inglaterra pelo socialista William Morris, (e de ideias influenciadas pelo romancista John Ruskin) procurava um meio de fazer trabalhos impressos em móveis e objetos. O ato de revalorizar o trabalho manual e recuperar o valor estético dos objetos produzidos para uso cotidiano viriam a se transformar no que conhecemos como “design”. A partir deste período histórico, inaugurou-se a Art Nouveau ou em tradução do francês, “arte nova”, que contribuiu para mudanças no setor de arquitetura, influenciando, artes plásticas e design (design de moda, o mobiliário, assim como o design de vasos e lamparinas, artigos de vidro e estampas, havendo também o redesenho das tipografias antigas e ornamentais). Como marca, tinha grande estilo, logo recebeu o apelido de modern style que pelo mundo afora, obteve outras denominações: Flower art na Inglaterra, Liberty, stilo "Floreale" na Itália e na Alemanha Jugendstil, sendo um estilo psicodélico. No Brasil foi divulgado como em francês (Art Nouveau), e o grande nome desse período, foi o ítalo-brasileiro Eliseu d'Angelo Visconti, pintor e designer. Na sequência: Cavalos, Eliseu Daneglo - O Beijo da Gloria, Gustav Klimt - A Lei Áurea, Eliseu Visconti - Bas de Portière, Eliseu Visconti Os avanços tecnológicos melhoraram a qualidade de impressões e até mesmo nas construções. Na arquitetura, passou a ser usado ferro e vidro, enquanto o design gráfico passava a usar litográfica colorida. Neste tempo, os artistas como Touluse-Lautrec, se focaram em produzir cartazes e objetos de decoração, assim deixando uma trilha encaminhando o mundo ao design moderno. Em 1907, arquitetos, designers e empresários alemães que se influenciariam por William Morris e pela Jugendstil ou "Arte Nova Alemã", fundaram a Deutscher Werkbund, que buscava a melhora da produção industrial e futuramente dando início a escola Staaliches Bauhaus. O design tipográfico, durante o futurismo (em 1909), aboliu o tipografismo tradicional explorando a língua nativa (ou vernacular), além das onomatopeias, que tiveram grande repercussão no concretismo; design pós-moderno; dadaísmo (neste período os artistas incorporavam em suas obras montagens de imagens, junção entre diferentes formas de expressão, representação objetos, sons e imagens do cotidiano, com base em fotografia, artes plásticas e teatro) e na tipografia moderna. 9 A HISTÓRIA DO DESIGN GRÁFICO | BAUHAUS Outro movimento estético que deixou marcas no design e artes plásticas foi o neoplasticismo, muitas vezes confundido com o nome da revista De Stijl, fundada em 1917, nos países baixos pelo designer gráfico, arquiteto, artista plástico e poeta neerlandês Theo van Doesburg e alguns colegas. Embora este movimento mantivera-se por menos de quinze anos sua essência permanece até hoje presente na arquitetura e pintura, logo no design também. Sua arte era baseada no abstracionismo, reduzindo os elementos aos seus traços mais puros, ângulos retos, cores primárias e tons de preto e branco se tornaram os elementos essenciais na estética neoplástica, os membros pensavam como se a arte buscada pelo movimento indicasse um relacionamento harmonioso e que representava exemplo perante a sociedade, ou somente para um indivíduo. Theo chegou a dar palestras para divulgar o movimento, um dos lugares foi a escola Bauhaus, onde influenciou a arquitetura e o design com os diversos ambientes futuristas. Stained-Glass Composition VIII, Theo van Doesburg (1883-1931) Theo van Doesburg A união entre arquitetura, pintura e desenho industrial ganhou força em 1919 pela escola de arte Bauhaus, criada pelo arquiteto Walter Gropius, na Alemanha. Sua estética revolucionou o design moderno com formas mais simplistas, linhas retas e um visual minimalista, além de uma forte crítica ao governo de Adolf Hitler, responsável por seu fechamento em 1933. Sua influência é vista nas obras de Oscar Niemeyer, com formas geométricas e cores brancas, utilizadas na construção de Brasília, e até mesmo nos produtos da marca Apple No que se refere à estrutura e à concepção de arte, a Bauhaus foi uma das escolas que mais ousaram, como acentua o artista Lary McGinity(2011, p. 414.) “[...] o ensino da Bauhaus refletia uma visão utópica de uma comunidade de artesãos e artistas que criava objetos simples e bem feitos. Um dos principais professores era o místico Johannes Itten (1888- 1969), que ministrava curso preparatório obrigatório. Suas aulas incluíam 'Análises de obras dos grandes mestres', 'Desenho após nu' e 'Estudos de materiais'”. Girard may have borrowed this title as a way of announcing a creative debt to Rohmer: both Rohmer and Girard are low-key, naturalistic artists who specialize in stories about self-conscious male protagonists navigating thorny romantic relationships. Rohmer’s La Collectionneuse is an entry in his “Moral Tales” cycle of films—called “moral” not for ethical reasons, but because the term moraliste in the Gallic cultural context refers to those writers (such as Stendahl) who take the interior lives of men and women as their primary subject. Rohmer himself described his characters as people who like to bring their motives, the reasons for their actions, into the open. But in this case, that’s a good thing. Appropri- ately in an election year, our society as a whole—and particularly those institu- tions devoted to education—should be focusing on an office that continues to grow in importance for our nation and for the world. We need to know as much as possible about what to expect from the individual who will occupy the Oval Office, and also how those expectations have changed over the years. I have written elsewhere in this issue about America’s Presidents, but here I’d like to make a special point about the visual record of the presidency that is the Portrait Gallery’s contribution to our national understanding. The Portrait Gallery has about 1,200 images that refer to the American presidency, and these paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings, and photographs are at the heart of our collection. In our Hall of Presidents, we literally look these Presidents in the eye and take their measure at moments when they had the greatest effect on our life as a people. But the Portrait Gallery’s curators and historians have also taken care to assemble images that make us aware of not only the process through which we choose Presidents—campaigns and elections—but also the pro- cess through which we evaluate them once in office. A President’s formal portrait tells us a great deal about the symbolic place the office holds, as well as something of the individual’s look and personality.

    Our member Nancy Caldwell Sorel died on February 5, 2015 at the age of 80 from Lewy Body Dementia. Nancy had been a long time member of Bulls Head-Oswego Meeting, along with her husband Edward Sorel and their daughters Jenny and Katherine, who attended First Day School at the Bentley Farm space in the 1970s. Towards the end of Nancy’s life we saw her with her daughters and grandchildren. From first to last she had a generous, kind and loving spirit. Nancy was a noted historian and author. Her body of work included the books “The Women Who Wrote the War” and “All about Eve: Personal Reflections of Childbirth” and essays that appeared in Esquire, The Atlantic, and the New York Times Book Review. She collaborated with her husband, the artist Edward Sorel, on two books: "Word People” and “First Encounters." She also used her interest in history as a contributor and editor of “Quaker Crosscurrents” a history of Quakers in New York State, especially on the sections on Peace and Social Justice. Nancy Caldwell graduated from Ohio Wesleyan in 1956 where she majored in English Literature. She continued to pursue her study of literature at the University of Edinburgh and later NYU. Nancy lived briefly in London where she was introduced to the Religious Society of Friends. In 1961 she volunteered for the United Nations Association International Service in Linz, Austria, building homes for World War II refugees who were still stateless sixteen years after the end of war. Nancy and Ed met in 1963 at Morningside Friends Meeting, which they later joined and where they were married in 1965.

Next came stage roles like 15 Gramercy Park South Autolycus and Bottom with Laurence Olivier’s National Manhattan Theatre Company, and Fagin in Cameron Mackintosh’s PROGRAM AT 6:00 P.M. Oliver. In 1980 he collected a Tony Award for his title Admission Free, But role in Barnum. Since then he has been nominated for Reservations Requested Tony, Drama Desk, and other honors for his work in such plays as Candide, Comedians, Joe Egg, Me and My Girl, and Scapino. As if those accolades were not enough, he also holds two Grammy Awards and ten Audie Awards as the “voice” of Harry Potter.
