More and more, people are recognizing the importance of giving back to the approximately 8,000 youth currently in foster care, and the nearly 650 youth who age out each year. Since 1996, New Yorkers For Children (NYFC) has been at the forefront of this work; but it would not be possible without our partners in the field. Looking back on 2019, NYFC has truly been strengthened by the resiliency and hard work of the youth we serve, as well as by the dedication and generosity of our steadfast partners. This year’s theme – BETTER TOGETHER – describes what New Yorkers have always intrinsically known: that we are at our best when The Administration for we lift each other up – not only as individuals or as a community, but as a city Children’s Services (ACS) and a system. is deeply grateful to our partners at NYFC for NYFC has worked for nearly 25 years to enroll foster youth in college, support helping to administer them through graduation, and help them gain the skills needed to enter the critical programming for youth and families in the workforce.

  • Dangerously Free: Outlaws and Nation-Making in Literature of the Indian Territory
DANGEROUSLY FREE: OUTLAWS AND NATION-MAKING IN LITERATURE OF THE INDIAN TERRITORY by Jenna Hunnef A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of English University of Toronto © Copyright by Jenna Hunnef 2016 Dangerously Free: Outlaws and Nation-Making in Literature of the Indian Territory Jenna Hunnef Doctor of Philosophy Department of English University of Toronto 2016 Abstract In this dissertation, I examine how literary representations of outlaws and outlawry have contributed to the shaping of national identity in the United States. I analyze a series of texts set in the former Indian Territory (now part of the state of Oklahoma) for traces of what I call “outlaw rhetorics,” that is, the political expression in literature of marginalized realities and competing visions of nationhood. Outlaw rhetorics elicit new ways to think the nation differently—to imagine the nation otherwise; as such, I demonstrate that outlaw narratives are as capable of challenging the nation’s claims to territorial or imaginative title as they are of asserting them. Borrowing from Abenaki scholar Lisa Brooks’s definition of “nation” as “the multifaceted, lived experience of families who gather in particular places,” this dissertation draws an analogous relationship between outlaws and domestic spaces wherein they are both considered simultaneously exempt from and constitutive of civic life. In the same way that the outlaw’s alternately celebrated and marginal status endows him or her with the power to support and eschew the stories a nation tells about itself, so the liminality and centrality of domestic life have proven effective as a means of consolidating and dissenting from the status quo of the nation-state.

  • The Impact of Using Gregorian Calendar Dates in Systems That Adapt Localization: in the Case of Ethiopia
IOSR Journal of Computer Engineering (IOSR-JCE) e-ISSN: 2278-0661,p-ISSN: 2278-8727, Volume 19, Issue 6, Ver. III (Nov - Dec 2017), PP 01-07 www.iosrjournals.org The impact of using Gregorian calendar dates in systems that adapt localization: In the case of Ethiopia Getnet Mossie Zeleke1, Metages Molla Gubena2 1,2Department of Information Technology, College of Technology, Debre Markos University, Ethiopia Abstract: Ethiopian calendar has 13 months in which 12 months have 30 days equal and the 13th month has 5 or 6 days length. Date is one of the inputs for web or desktop applications. Java Development Kit(JDK) and Joda- Time Date Time package have been used for date manipulation in java based applications developed for local use in Ethiopia. Besides, Gregorian calendar date time pickers have also been used in web applications. This leads the application developers not to fully adapt localization. To fill this gap we developed JavaScript Date Picker and date manipulator java package in Ethiopian calendar basis. The first product consists of Amharic week day and month names which enable users to pick Ethiopian date as an input in web applications. The second product is used to manipulate Ethiopian date in java desktop and web applications. In the package different methods are defined to perform date related activities such as date calculations, extraction of date element in a given date, presentation of date in different date formats like መስከረም 12, 2010 etc. Unlike other date time java packages, dealing with Ethiopian dates using our date package does not require date conversion.

  • ON the RECONSTRUCTED MACEDONIAN and EGYPTIAN LUNAR CALENDARS Aus: Zeitschrift Für Papyrologie Und Epigraphik 119 (1997) 157-166
ALEXANDER JONES ON THE RECONSTRUCTED MACEDONIAN AND EGYPTIAN LUNAR CALENDARS aus: Zeitschrift für Papyrologie und Epigraphik 119 (1997) 157-166 © Dr. Rudolf Habelt GmbH, Bonn 2 Name 157 ON THE RECONSTRUCTED MACEDONIAN AND EGYPTIAN LUNAR CALENDARS Documentary sources from Hellenistic Egypt attest to the use of three calendrical systems: the Egyptian civil calendar, which employed years that invariably comprised 365 days (12 months of exactly 30 days plus 5 “epagomenal” days), an Egyptian cult calendar that employed some sort of lunar months, and a Macedonian calendar in which the months were again lunar.1 The regulation of the Egyptian civil calendar is thoroughly understood, to the extent that we can convert all complete dates in this calendar to their exact equivalents in the modern historian’s Julian calendar and vice versa. It has for some time been generally believed that we similarly know the principles of regulation of the two lunar calendars. First R. A. Parker reconstructed a calendrical scheme for the Egyptian lunar calendar that tied its months in a recurring 25-year cycle with the months of the civil calendar.2 Thereafter A. E. Samuel applied the same 25-year lunation cycle to the Macedonian calendar.3 Small modifications have subsequently been proposed to Samuel’s hypothesis concerning the time-lag between the beginnings of the Egyptian and Macedonian lunar months. The present article sets out to show that the documentary foundation for these reconstructed calendars is much less solid than is usually supposed. In the case of the Macedonian calendar, it turns out that the evidence adduced for the reconstructed scheme tells strongly against it.

Inscription: lower right: John Sloan Corcoran Collection (Museum Purchase, Gallery Fund) 2014.136.54 ENTRY In August 1910 the realist painter John Sloan began this group portrait of regulars at Petitpas’, a French restaurant and boardinghouse in the Chelsea district of Manhattan. The work joined other Ashcan school artists’ depictions of casual dining experiences in urban eateries that focused on portraiture and narrative, such as At Mouquin’s by William Glackens (American, 1870 - 1938) [fig. 1]. [1] The Ashcan school, informally led by Robert Henri (American, 1865 - 1929), generally focused on the everyday life of the working classes rather than idealized views of the city. George Luks (American, 1866 - 1933) and George Bellows (American, 1882 - 1925) completed a watercolor and a print, respectively, featuring Petitpas’ as well [fig. 2], but Sloan’s large image in oil is the most ambitious of the three. [2] The scene takes place in the enclosed backyard of the restaurant, where the dining room was located in the hot summer months. The party gathers around a table placed under an awning decorated with a French flag. [3] At the head sits John Butler Yeats, smoking and sketching. Yeats, the Irish portrait painter and father of the poet William Butler Yeats, lived at Petitpas’ from 1909 until his death in 1922.

Currency is losing value. Army vets are unpaid – given promissory notes that are worth little due to inflation. Vets sell their notes to put clothes on their backs and food in their mouths. Economic slump of the 1780s had many sources: • Massive quantities of property were destroyed in the war. • Because men were fighting in the war, they were unable to perform their regular jobs. Economic output fell. • Enslaved men, women, and children emancipated themselves by leaving with the British or simply running into forests and swamps. This was a financial loss to their enslavers. • Britain refused to allow Americans to trade with British sugar islands in the Caribbean – one of the American’s greatest income sources.

  • VINTAGE POSTERS FEBRUARY 25 Our Annual Winter Auction of Vintage Posters Features an Exceptional Selection of Rare and Important Art Nouveau Posters
SCALING NEW HEIGHTS There is much to report from the Swann offices these days as new benchmarks are set and we continue to pioneer new markets. Our fall 2013 season saw some remarkable sales results, including our top-grossing Autographs auction to date—led by a handwritten Mozart score and a collection of Einstein letters discussing his general theory of relativity, which brought $161,000 each. Check page 7 for more post-sale highlights from the past season. On page 7 you’ll also find a brief tribute to our beloved Maps specialist Gary Garland, who is retiring after nearly 30 years with Swann, and the scoop on his replacement, Alex Clausen. Several special events are in the works for our winter and spring sales, including a talk on the roots of African-American Fine Art that coincides with our February auction, a partnership with the Library Company of Philadelphia and a discussion of the growing collecting field of vernacular photography. Make sure we have your e-mail address so you’ll receive our invites.
