Tuexenia 13: 3-10. Göttingen 1993. Professor Dr. Franz Fukarek zum Ehrenmitglied ernannt — H. Krisch, Greifswald — Anläßlich der Jahresversammlung am 4. Juni 1993 während der Tagung in Regensburg hat die Floristisch-soziologische Arbeitsgemeinschaft Herrn Professor Dr. Franz FUKAREK zu ihrem Ehrenmitglied ernannt. Damit wurden nicht nur seine Verdienste um die floristische und vegetationskundliche Erforschung des nordostdeutschen Flachlandes gewürdigt, sondern es wurde ihm auch gedankt für seine langjährigen Bemühungen, den Kontakt zwischen West und Ost nicht abreißen zu lassen. Franz FUKAREK wurde am 21. Januar 1926 in Rumburg (Sudetenland) geboren, wo er auch aufwuchs und die Schule besuchte, bis man ihn nach dem elften Schuljahr im Mai 1944 zur Wehrmacht einzog. Bereits im Januar 1945 wurde er verwundet, was schließlich im April 1945 zur Entlassung aus der Wehrmacht führte. Dann folgte die Ausweisung der Deutschen aus dem 3 Sudetenland, und Franz FUKAREK gelangte im Juni 1945 ins benachbarte Zittau, wo sein Vater verhaftet wurde und wenige Wochen später im Konzentrationslager Hirschfelde umkam. Alle diese Ereignisse prägen einen jungen Menschen sicherlich nachhaltig. Auf der Suche nach einer Bleibe und einer sicheren Ernährungsgrundlage begibt Franz FUKAREK sich schließlich über Gera und Hildburghausen in den kleinen Ort Arensdorf nördlich von Halle (Saale), wohin er seine Mutter nachkommen läßt. Von dort aus bot sich ihm zunächst die Gelegenheit, in den altehrwürdigen Franckeschen Stiftungen in Halle das Abitur nachzuholen, so daß er mit dem Herbstsemester 1946/47 das Studium der Biologie, Geographie und Geologie — alle Fächer wurden zunächst gleichwertig belegt — an der Martin-Luther-Uni- versität Halle-Wittenberg aufnehmen konnte. Geschichte und Theorie der Biologie The Society is a relatively late addition to a series of German societies of science and medicine that began with the “Deutsche Gesellschaft für Geschichte der Medizin und der Naturwissenschaften”, Annals of the History founded in 1910 by Leipzig University‘s Karl Sudhoff (1853-1938), who wrote: “We want to establish a ‘German’ society in order to gather Ger- and Philosophy of Biology man-speaking historians together in our special disciplines so that they form the core of an international society…”. Yet Sudhoff, at this Volume 17 (2012) time of burgeoning academic internationalism, was “quite willing” to accommodate the wishes of a number of founding members and formerly Jahrbuch für “drop the word German in the title of the Society and have it merge Geschichte und Theorie der Biologie with an international society”. Although all relevant national and regional syntaxonomic reviews classify these rocky grasslands within the distinct order Halacsyetalia sendtneri, the syntaxonomic position of the order in different systems of classification has varied in the past. Considering this as well as the fact that there have been no synoptic works on this specific vegetation type, we gathered all available data on the order Halacsyetalia sendtnerii from the serpentinites of the Western and Central Balkan Peninsula for its critical evaluation. The results obtained in our analyses allowed us to propose a new syntaxonomic concept, which is partly in accordance with previously published syntaxonomic schemes. -

Biotic Interactions Overrule Plant Responses to Climate, Depending on the Species’ Biogeography Astrid Welk1*, Erik Welk1,2, Helge Bruelheide1,2 1 Institute of Biology/Geobotany and Botanical Garden, Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, Halle (Saale), Germany, 2 German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) Halle-Jena-Leipzig, Leipzig, Germany Abstract This study presents an experimental approach to assess the relative importance of climatic and biotic factors as determinants of species’ geographical distributions. We asked to what extent responses of grassland plant species to biotic interactions vary with climate, and to what degree this variation depends on the species’ biogeography. Using a gradient from oceanic to continental climate represented by nine common garden transplant sites in Germany, we experimentally tested whether congeneric grassland species of different geographic distribution (oceanic vs. continental plant range type) responded differently to combinations of climate, competition and mollusc herbivory. We found the relative importance of biotic interactions and climate to vary between the different components of plant performance. While survival and plant height increased with precipitation, temperature had no effect on plant performance. Additionally, species with continental plant range type increased their growth in more benign climatic conditions, while those with oceanic range type were largely unable to take a similar advantage of better climatic conditions. Competition generally caused strong reductions of aboveground biomass and growth. In contrast, herbivory had minor effects on survival and growth. Against expectation, these negative effects of competition and herbivory were not mitigated under more stressful continental climate conditions. In conclusion we suggest variation in relative importance of climate and biotic interactions on broader scales, mediated via species-specific sensitivities and factor-specific response patterns. -

A New Association from the Relict Mountain Steppe Vegetation in South- Western Bulgaria
HACQUETIA 9/2 • 2010, 185–206 DOI: 10.2478/v10028-010-0010-2 Bromo moesiacae-stipetum epilosae – A new AssociatIon from the relIct mountain steppe vegetAtIon In south- western BulgAria Salza Todorova1 & rossen TzoNEV2 Abstract A syntaxonomical analysis of the dry grasslands (Festuco-Brometea) in Bosnek karst region, Mt Vitosha (SW Bulgaria) has been carried out. These grasslands are part of the intrazonal vegetation distributed within the belts of xerophilous oak and mesophilous beech forest in the south-western foothills of the mountain. The bedrock is carbonate, the soils are dry and shallow, climate – moderate continental. This vegetation grows mostly on steep slopes, with southern and south-western exposition. Apart from the typical for Festuco-Brom- etea calcicoles, the studied vegetation is characterized by many endemic (regional and local) species and at the same time includes a lot of Mediterranean species. As a result of the analysis, a new association, Bromo moesiacae-Stipetum epilosae ass. nova, has been established that belongs to the alliance Saturejon montanae. A comparison with related syntaxa from other karst mountains from SW Bulgaria and E Serbia is made, and some conclusions about the origin of the steppe vegetation in that region are drawn. Izvleček Naredili smo sintaksonomsko analizo suhih travnikov (Festuco-Brometea) v kraškem območju Bosnek v gorovju Vitoša (jugozahodna Bolgarija). Ti travniki so del intraconalne vegetacije, razširjene v pasu kserofilnih hra- stovih in mezofilnih bukovih gozdov na jugozahodnih vznožjih hribovja. Matična podlaga je karbonatna, tla so suha in plitva, podnebje je zmerno celinsko.
