An additional 16 PLUTO fuel pipelines are laid under the English Channel to points in France (Oxford). Japanese airstrip at Sandakan, Borneo, is put out of action by Allied bombing. Built with forced labour by some 3,600 Indonesian civilians and 2,400 Australian and British PoWs captured at Singapore (of which only some 1,900 were still alive at this time). It is decided to abandon the airfield. Between January and March the prisoners are force marched in groups to a new location 160 miles away, but most cannot complete the journey due to disease and malnutrition, and are killed by their guards. Only 6 Australian servicemen are found alive from this group at the end of the war, having escaped from the column, and only 3 of these survived to testify against their guards. All the remaining enlisted RAF prisoners of 205 Sqn., captured at Singapore and Indonesia, died in these death marches (Jardine, wikipedia). On the Russian front Soviet and Allied air forces (French, Czechoslovakian, Polish, etc, units flying under Soviet command) on their front with Germany total over 16,000 fighters, bombers, dive bombers and ground attack aircraft (Passingham & Klepacki). THE SEARCH FOR CONTINENTAL SECURITY: The Development of the North American Air Defence System, 1949 to 1956 By MATTHEW PAUL TRUDGEN A thesis submitted to the Department of History in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada September 12, 2011 Copyright © Matthew Paul Trudgen, 2011 Abstract This dissertation examines the development of the North American air defence system from the beginning of the Cold War until 1956. It focuses on the political and diplomatic dynamics behind the emergence of these defences, which included several radar lines such as the Distant Early Warning (DEW) Line as well as a number of initiatives to enhance co-operation between the United States Air Force (USAF) and the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF). This thesis argues that these measures were shaped by two historical factors. The first was several different conceptions of what policy on air defence best served the Canadian national interest held by the Cabinet, the Department of External Affairs, the RCAF and the Other Government Departments (OGDs), namely Transport, Defence Production and Northern Affairs. For the Cabinet and External Affairs, their approach to air defence was motivated by the need to balance working with the Americans to defend the continent with the avoidance of any political fallout that would endanger the government‘s chance of reelection. Nationalist sentiments and the desire to ensure that Canada both benefited from these projects and that its sovereignty in the Arctic was protected further influenced these two groups. On the other hand, the RCAF was driven by a more functional approach to this issue, as they sought to work with the USAF to develop the best air defence system possible. -

Kupsky, pursuant to 28 U.S.C. § 1746, declare as follows: 1. I am currently a historian in the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency’s (DPAA) Indo-Pacific Directorate, and have served in that position since January 2017. Among other things, I am responsible for coordinating Directorate manning and case file preparation for Family Update conferences, and I am the lead historian for all research and casework on missing servicemembers from the Philippines. I also conduct archival research in the Washington, D.C. area to support DPAA’s Hawaii-based operations. 2. The statements contained in this declaration are based on my personal knowledge and DPAA records and information made available to me in my official capacity. Qualifications 3. I have been employed by DPAA or one of its predecessor organizations, the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC), since May 2011. Theory of aces: high score by skill or luck? M.V. Simkin and V.P. Roychowdhury Department of Electrical Engineering, University of California, Los Angeles, CA 90095-1594 We studied the distribution of WWI fighter pilots by the number of victories they were credited with along with casualty reports. Using the maximum entropy method we obtained the underlying distribution of pilots by their skill. We find that the variance of this skill distribution is not very large, and that the top aces achieved their victory scores mostly by luck. For example, the ace of aces, Manfred von Richthofen, most likely had a skill in the top quarter of the active WWI German fighter pilots, and was no more special than that. When combined with our recent study [10], showing that fame grows exponentially with victory scores, these results (derived from real data) show that both outstanding achievement records and resulting fame are mostly due to chance. During the “Manhattan project” (the making of nuclear bomb), physicist Enrico Fermi asked General Leslie Groves, the head of the project, what is the definition of a “great” general [1]. Groves replied that any general who had won five battles in a row might safely be called great. Fermi then asked how many generals are great. Groves said about three out of every hundred. Fermi conjectured that if the chance of winning one battle is 1/2 then the chance of winning five battles in a row is 1 25 = 1 32 . “So you are right, General, about three out of every hundred. Mathematical probability, not genius.” Similarly to a great general, an ace is a fighter pilot who achieved five or more victories. -

CHAPTER 1 8 THE LAST BATTLES : THE WAY HOM E Y mid-March the pessimism created by the slugging battles durin g B the winter in the Ardennes was swept away by a new convictio n among Allied military leaders that a swift end to the European war was not only possible but inevitable . Army and air force commanders vie d with each other to exert the maximum pressure before the final Germa n collapse. Although not free from political and prestige undertones, th e tactical improvisations made (especially by American army commanders ) within the general framework of General Eisenhower's three-phase strategy , resulted in hammer blows along the length of the River Rhine, against none of which could the Wehrmacht assemble adequate reserves . Despite Goebbels' propaganda call for the whole German nation to fight the invaders, despite preparations for demolition and scorched earth in th e Rhineland, and notwithstanding the productive genius of Speer, th e Germans had neither the men nor the material to prevent the surg e forward of the Allied armies in good campaigning weather. For their part Eisenhower 's armies were no longer faced with the logistics proble m which had halted them six months earlier before the Rhine, after thei r helter-skelter dash across France . Generals Bradley, Patton and Patc h were now assured of adequate independent strength to exploit any loca l break-through they might achieve without (as had happened at Arnhem ) seriously prejudicing each others' or Montgomery's own plans . In fact the balance of forces was such that each opportunist America n attack so preoccupied enemy reserves that the projected main drive b y General Montgomery across the lower Rhine at Wesel was materially assisted. -

Air commanders have clashed continually with ground leaders over the proper use of aircraft in the support of ground operations. This is perhaps not surprising given the very different outlooks of the two services on what constitutes prop- er air support. Often this has turned into a competition between the two serv- ices for resources to execute and control close air support operations. Although such differences extend well back to the initial use of the airplane as a military weapon, in this book the author looks at the period 1946- 1973, a period in which technological advances in the form of jet aircraft, weapons, communications, and other electronic equipment played significant roles. Doctrine, too, evolved and this very important subject is discussed in detail. Close air support remains a critical mission today and the lessons of yesterday should not be ignored. This book makes a notable contribution in seeing that it is not ignored. -
