2 3 By the time I returned here in 2012, I was already host to the show “Living the Classical Life,” a series of filmed conversational portraits with famous performers and personalities A MESSAGE FROM from around the world. In East Hampton we filmed features with Paul Schenly, Jerome THE DIRECTOR Lowenthal, and Mark Ainley. That was the same summer I met Joseph Piropato from the community, as well as his husband, Paul. Joe was initially looking to resume piano lessons I invited Zsolt Bognár, one of our cherished after a hiatus; our subsequent conversations about music and life led to what has become a alumni, to write a few words about his summers close and meaningful lifelong friendship with them both. Joe’s singular passion for music in East Hampton—to describe what Pianofest and piano led to his subsequent involvement in Living the Classical Life—and he is now meant to him at the time, and what it has come to one of the youngest members of the Pianofest board. Joe and I traveled to Lugano to meet mean to him since. His response, while uniquely with several friends to hear and Martha Argerich perform Sergei’s Prokofiev insightful, captures a sentiment that I hope many arrangements, and this was all of course from the chance connection through our festival. of you will share. Those of us who were present from the start will recall that Sergei visited during Pianofest’s second year, and later returned several times as faculty; his fame today has grown to world- — Paul Schenly class stature.

As for my own growth, I remember fondly that some of the most intense work I did in my life was at our kitchen piano, practicing 10 hours a day during one summer when As we welcome our newest group of musical talent to our milestone 30th year here at preparing for my Berlin debut at Konzerthaus. During lessons, Paul and I slowly figured Pianofest, I reflect on my own first summer at the festival ten years ago, and how I envy out the program together, and I recall his calm and considered help, along with his famous the students and audiences who are here for the first time. Upon my arrival at the train puns. One work in particular, Liszt’s Scherzo and March, was a monumental challenge, station, I was greeted by Pianofest students and one of the house managers, Bill McNally, but it was here that I prepared it. Although in Berlin it was only the second work on as well as by the hot sunshine, the particular type of summer humidity that lends itself to the program, it was already greeted by a standing ovation that lasted many minutes with porches and lemonade, and the intoxicating smell of the ocean. Over the years, each arrival unison clapping. I will never forget it, and where it all started. to East Hampton meant driving through the village and its tall rows of trees, its amusingly expensive boutiques, and the celebrity-spotting that was sometimes hazardous to traffic. Pianofest is a family of old friends and new, connected as a global but intimate community, Arrival at the Pianofest house was always a sense of a new beginning: the atmosphere of gathered here during the summer at Pianofest for an incredible 30th time—a testament to idealism and excitement with the prospect of a summer of learning, friendships, concerts, the work and character of the Pianofest family -- its founders, board members, volunteers, and our fabled after-parties. faculty, students, donors and audience—and we look forward to saying hello to you and to thanking you for being part of a unique experience in the musical world, and for your From that first summer in 2008, I was immediately immersed in the intensity of our lesson support in keeping it alive. schedule with Paul, as well as with our visiting faculty. An equally large impression was the nature of having pianos in each room of the house—the fun was trying them all and — Zsolt Bognár determining which was the personal favorite. Mine always ended up being the one in the kitchen, perhaps because practicing while one’s friend is staring at one’s work while eating Cheerios is an exercise in concentration-building. At Pianofest I made some of the closest friends—lifelong friends I still keep close, and also visit in the many cities and countries I travel to. When I made my debut at Mozarthaus, for example, Chia Tsay was smiling from the audience—we were housemates at Bill Plate’s home in East Hampton. When I attended Igor Lovchinsky’s wedding in Boston some years ago, the atmosphere of exciting summer-camp friendships was very much alive. For many of us as we meet subsequently across the country, it’s as though no time has passed since the evenings staring at the stars from the beach. Then two summers ago, I took a long roadtrip from down to the South, cutting west across several states along I-20. I randomly passed through Cleveland, Tennessee, and stopped for lunch to check out the namesake. As it turns out, this city is also home to Lee University, where Cahill Smith was running a piano festival and competition. I suddenly no longer felt a stranger, and was attending these concerts with the greatest pleasure and sense of community in a locale I had just discovered—for me an extension of Pianofest.

16 2018 RISING STAR SERIES

RISING STARS PIANO RECITAL SERIES AT THE SOUTHAMPTON CULTURAL CENTER Pianofest is proud of its association with the Levitas Center for the Arts. This season, several amazingly gifted young artists will reveal a beautiful and very JAMES S. MARCUS special world of piano classical music to their Hampton audience as part of the Rising Stars Piano Recital Series. Please join them for unforgettable evenings. With Continuing Appreciation

James S. Marcus, a Harvard graduate, former Chairman of the Board of the Metropolitan Opera, and a general partner of Goldman Sachs, was known to Pianofest simply as “Jim.”

Born in 1929 and raised in New York City, Jim and his wife, Ellen, are noted philanthropists. For example, they generously established Ellen and James S. Marcus Institute for Vocal Arts. Jim was also a trustee of numerous organizations, including the American Composers Orchestra, the Animal Medical Center of New York, the Collegiate Chorale, Lenox Hill Hospital, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, the Manhattan Theatre Club, and WNET.

Jim is a classic example of a successful person. He had a wonderful career, he was financially successful, and then invested his considerable intellectual and material resources for the betterment of humanity. He focused on supporting music and musicians in a way that helped to ensure that they achieved their greatest potential and then presented their art for the enjoyment and inspiration of their audiences. Jim did what all truly great people do, in that he gained greatly and then gave even more, and in this way, gained in his giving.

Jim told me more than once that he considered himself a student of Pianofest and exemplified this by attending every master class that he could. He was very direct and honest, and did not suffer fools gladly. He often advised me on Pianofest matters, and it pleased me very much to see how the students enjoyed talking with Ellen and Jim and how LILIANE QUESTAL they became very close to several Pianofest artists. Director and Founder of the Rising Stars Piano Recital Series, which has completed One of my great enduring memories of Jim is when I wanted to visit mutual friends who fifteen successful seasons; Pianofest board member; SCC board member. had become shy about socializing and didn’t know how to go about it. Jim’s advice was typically direct and brilliant: “Just go over there—and bring sandwiches.” And you know, it worked!

LEVITAS CENTER FOR THE ARTS Jim’s passing is a great loss, but we were very lucky to have him amongst us. Southampton Cultural Center | 25 Pond Lane, Southampton
