Equally adept as solo pianist, collaborative artist, and educator, he exerts a profound influence on the musical community. Kalish commands an extraordinaril broad repertoire, from the 18th century to the present, and his performances have established him as a major figure in American music making. Many of this century's most prominent composers have written new works with Kalish's communicative powers in mind. His concert tours have taken him across the United States and to many of the world's music capitals and university centers. A native New Yorker and graduate of Columbia University, Kalish studied with Leonard Shure, Isabella Vengerova, and Julius Hereford. He is a founding member of the Contemporary Chamber Ensemble and pianist since 1969 for the Boston Symphony Chamber Players. He also appears as a guest artist with such distinguished ensembles as the Juilliard Quartet and the New York Woodwind Quintet.

Appearing at festivals and music centers around the globe, he has performed at the Ravinia Music Festival, Aspen Music Festival, Les Festival International du Domaine Forget, Kronberg Academy, Ascoli Piceno Festival, Carl Orff Festival, and the World Cello Congress. Equally at home with modern and baroque performance styles, and often juxtaposing them in concert programs, Joseph has worked extensively with living composers, among them Robert Cogan, Heinz Holliger, Helmut Lachenmann and Arvo Part: and has performed with the Ensemble für Neue Musik Basel, Neue Musik Ensemble Mannheim, Second Instrumental Unit, New York, and the Callithumpian Consort of Boston. Joseph is the Artistic Director of the Fredericksburg Music Festival where world renowned European classical musicians gather in historic Fredericksburg TX for a week of music making. In 2010 Joseph founded the Marinus Project an international collective of chamber musicians dedicated to the tradition of classical music in our time. Marinus is the “Ensemble in Residence” at Washington and Lee University and Eastern University. In April 2011 the Marinus Ensemble received a $200,000 unrestricted artist development grant to further the Marinus Project. Joseph completed his undergraduate studies at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, where his primary teachers were Paul Katz for cello and Pozzi Escot for composition.

    AN ARTHUR BERGER New World Records 80360 RETROSPECTIVE with GILBERT KALISH, piano JOEL KROSNICK, cello CHRISTOPHER OLDFATHER, piano JOEL SMIRNOFF, violin DAVID STAROBIN, guitar Members of the Boehm Quintette Arthur Berger is a stalwart of the American concert tradition. No popularizer, he has for some fifty years been producing sturdily crafted pieces that spring from the mixed lineage of Stravinsky, Schoenberg, and Copland. Yet the style is all his own. At times it readily appeals. Always it challenges. Born in 1912 and raised in the Bronx, Berger first studied at City College and New York University, later at the Longy School of Music and at Harvard. He completed his formal education with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. From 1939 to 1943 he taught at Mills College and Brooklyn College, then began writing music criticism for the New York Sun and, principally, the New York Herald-Tribune. In 1953 Berger joined the faculty of Brandeis University; he has also taught at Harvard and the Juilliard School, and is currently on the faculty of the New England Conservatory. Like many of his composer contemporaries, Berger has been an important and prolific writer. In addition to his stints as a journalist, he founded two quite different periodicals, each an outgrowth of the notion of a "little magazine" directed to a special public. The first, The Musical Mercury, was started in 1934 by Berger and Bernard Herrmann--the man later famous as a Hollywood film composer. Although The Musical Mercury included some articles about new works, it mostly explored European compositions of the past. The journal with which Berger is most closely identified, however, is Perspectives of New Music, begun with Benjamin Boretz in 1962.

He is the co-author of the Foundations of Music Education and the co-editor, with Professor Lori Custodero, of Critical Issues in Music Education: Contemporary Theory and Practice. The season continues out tradition of strong offerings in solo instrumental performances, vocal recitals, choral music, opera, and jazz/world music concerts. Our season opener will feature a chamber concert on Friday January 11, 2019 with New York based cellist, Ben Capps, and Russian pianist, Vassily Primakov. The Holland Times hailed Ben Capps as a “young cello phenomenon from New York.” Ben Capps is the recipient of many awards, including the the Lillian Fuchs Award, the Francis Goelet Scholarship (Juilliard 2008-2009), the Irving Mulde Scholarship (Juilliard, 2009-10), and the Piatigorsky Scholarship (New England Conservatory 2012- 13). Gramophone wrote that “Primakov’s empathy with Chopin’s spirit could hardly be more complete.” Vassily Primakov is a prize winner at the Cleveland Piano Competition and was a semi-finalist at the Van Cliburn Competition. Solo piano artists include Laura Klein, Clare Longendyke, Robyn Carmichael, Amy Stephens, Mark Valenti, and Susan Ellinger, as well as concerts for piano 4-hands with the Duo Papillion and A&R Duo. Also featured are organ recitals with Angela Kraft Cross and David Jaronowski and a Grammy award guitarist Cristobal Selamé. Other recent orchestral appearances include the opening concert of the Mostly Mozart Festival in New York City, and performances with the Indianapolis, Pasadena, Madison, Delaware, and Charleston Symphony Orchestras, and the Filarmonica de la Ciudad de Mexico. She has appeared in recital at Ravinia Festival’s Rising Stars Series, the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., the Gardner Museum in Boston, and La Jolla Chamber Music Society’s Discovery series.
