Bot. 21 (1): 01-09. Tehran. Piptatherum denaense is described as a new species from south west of Iran, Dena Mountain. It is close to P. laterale but differs from it by having glabrous lemma in lower half and toward the apex, narrower vegetative shoots and unbearded anthers. Piptatherum holciforme subsp. holciforme var. glabrum is not accepted as a distinct variety. Piptatherum sphacelatum formerly known as a synonym of P. molinioides is established as a separate species due to having distinct morphological characters as well as molecular differences based on literature. Thus, the number of taxa in the genus Piptatherum changes to 9 species, 2 subspecies and 4 varieties in Iran. An identification key to Piptatherum taxa occuring in Iran is provided. Hitchcock, Systematic Agrostologist of the United States Department of Agriculture, u entitled Types of American grasses: a study of the American species of grasses described by Linnaeus, Gronovius, Sloane, Swartz, and Michaux," is an important contribution to our knowledge of American grasses. It is regarded as of fundamental importance in the critical sys- tematic investigation of any group of plants that the identity of the species described by earlier authors be determined with certainty. Often this identification can be made only by examining the type specimen, the original description being inconclusive. Under the American code of botanical nomenclature, which has been followed by the author of this paper, "the nomenclatorial t}rpe of a species or subspecies is the specimen to which the describer originally applied the name in publication." The procedure indicated by the American code, namely, to appeal to the type specimen when the original description is insufficient to identify the species, has been much misunderstood by European botanists. It has been taken to mean, in the case of the Linnsean herbarium, for example, that a specimen in that herbarium bearing the same name as a species described by Linnaeus in his Species Plantarum must be taken as the type of that species regardless of all other considerations. -

A Checklist of the Vascular Plant Flora of the Utrish Area (Russian Black Sea Coast) (Supplement to Alexey P
ALEXEY P. SEREGIN & ELENA G. SUSLOVA A checklist of the vascular plant flora of the Utrish area (Russian Black Sea Coast) (Supplement to Alexey P. Seregin & Elena G. Suslova. Contribution to the vascular plant flora of the Utrish area, a relic sub-Mediterranean ecosystems of the Russian Black Sea Coast). There are 848 numbered species in the checklist (in Corylus avellana and Ulmus minor two varieties are recognised). 173 species added and 50 were excluded in comparison with previously published data (Syomina & Suslova 2000; Seregin & Suslova 2002). Nomenclature of 69 species was corrected. Families and species are arranged alphabetically within each divisio (Pteridophyta, Equisetophyta, Pinophyta, Magnoliophyta). 5 species not collected since 1960 and probably extinct are listed without consequential numbers. Recent herbarium collections including personal collections by Seregin and Suslova are deposited in MWG. First list (Syomina & Suslova, 2000) was compiled on the basis of Grossheim’s guide (1949) with nomenclatural verification of names according Czerepanov (1995). Nomenclature in addition (Seregin & Suslova, 2002) was checked after Zernov (2000). His later guide (Zernov, 2002) is a nomenclatural basis of the present checklist, though there are some deviations. We are citing 4 sources in brief nomenclatural references to link our papers (Syomina & Suslova 2000; Seregin & Suslova 2002) and standard guides (Grossheim 1949; Zernov 2002). 43 species listed in the Russian Red Data Book are marked with RUS, and 6 species protected on regional level (listed in the Red Data Book of Krasnodarsky Kray) are marked with REG. Cenchrus orientalis, Manihot grahamii, Melica chilensis and Panicum capillare subsp. hillmanii are probably reported for the first time from Spain, while Aloe ferox, Canna ×generalis, Cenchrus setaceus, Convolvulus farinosus, Ficus rubiginosa, Jarava plumosa, Koelreu- teria paniculata, Lycianthes rantonnetii, Nassella tenuissima, Paraserianthes lophantha, Plumbago auriculata, Podranea ricasoliana, Proboscidea louisianica, Sedum palmeri, Solanum bonariense, Tipuana tipu, Tradescantia pallida and Vitis ×ruggerii are reported for the first time from the province of Tarragona. Several of these are potential or genuine invasive species and/or agricultural weeds. Miscellane- ous additional records are presented for some further alien taxa with only few earlier records in the study area. The ‘needlegrasses’ are char- acterized by having single-flowered spikelets and stout, terminally-awned lem- mas. We conducted a molecular phylogenetic study of the Stipeae (including all genera except Anemanthele) using a total of 94 species (nine species were used as outgroups) based on five plastid DNA regions (trnK-5’matK, matK, trnHGUG-psbA, trnL5’-trnF, and ndhF) and a single nuclear DNA region (ITS). -

Abstract Administered by the USDA Forest Service, the Kiowa and Rita Blanca National Grasslands occupy 230,000 acres of public land extending from northeastern New Mexico into the panhandles of Oklahoma and Texas. A mosaic of topographic features including canyons, plateaus, rolling grasslands and outcrops supports a diverse flora. Eight hundred twenty six (826) species of vascular plant species representing 81 plant families are known to occur on or near these public lands. This report includes a history of the area; ethnobotanical information; an introductory overview of the area including its climate, geology, vegetation, habitats, fauna, and ecological history; and a plant survey and information about the rare, poisonous, and exotic species from the area. A vascular plant checklist of 816 vascular plant taxa in the appendix includes scientific and common names, habitat types, and general distribution data for each species. This list is based on extensive plant collections and available herbarium collections. Authors Donald L.
