CALL THE HANDS NHSA DIGITAL NEWSLETTER Issue No.16 February 2018 From the President Welcome to our first edition of Call the Hands for 2018. Since December, the wreck of HMAS AE1 has been discovered, STS Young Endeavour celebrated 30 years of service and Society members have been involved in several interesting activities. In the week prior to Christmas the discovery of HMAS AE1, excited the nation and ended the Navy’s longest mystery. AE1 was lost off the island of Rabaul on 14 September 1914 with all 35 crew members. The wreck site will remain ‘close held’ by Find AE1 Expedition member organisations until appropriate measures are taken to protect the site. Expedition leader, retired Rear Admiral Peter Briggs who has worked much of his life to find HMAS AE1 and his colleagues are saluted for this historic achievement. On 16 January the Commanding Officer HMAS Hobart, Captain John Stavridis and Supply Officer, Lieutenant Commander Mark Lee visited the Boatshed to acquaint themselves with an important HMAS Hobart heritage item, the Captain’s table from HMAS Hobart (I). The Society has held the table in trust since Hobart (II) decommissioned in May 2000. Descendants of HMAS Patricia Cam crew members and the community marked the 76th anniversary of her loss with a series of events in Darwin, Gosford, Sydney and Canberra from 20 to 22 January. Patricia Cam sank on 22 January 1943 after being bombed by a Japanese float plane. Society members participated in the Gosford (plaque unveiling where she was built) and Canberra last post ceremony at the Australian War Memorial.

Canberra – Further Research Although Canberra was sent off to the shipbreaker’s yard in 1997, her legacy still lives on. Aside from P&O Heritage Collection , there are a number of other public sources where researchers can find out more about the ship. This research guide provides a brief overview of what materials are available and where to find them. Canberra Archives & Museums The main bulk of Canberra archives are on permanent loan from P&OSNCo to the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich . Amongst the items held at the NMM are an abstract of Canberra ’s Log Book from her World Fair cruise in 1969 (P&O/46/8), Canberra design and construction reports (P&O/60/93 and P&O/60/94), arrangements for her launch (P&O/60/103), correspondence with one of her designers Sir Hugh Casson (P&O/60/104) and the requisition of Canberra for the Falklands Task Force (P&O/70/1). The NMM also holds two clocks designed by Casson which were used in Canberra ’s Ocean Room along with a Ship’s Mooring Telegraph dating from 1960. The Ulster Folk & Transport Museum holds the photographic collection for Harland & Wolff which contains over 70,000 shipyard images, some of which feature Canberra . In their archive, they also hold the entire series of original Canberra Log Books from her launch until her decommission in 1997 as well as an original illuminated deck plan of the ship donated by P&O Heritage Collection. The Public Records Office Northern Ireland holds a collection of papers from Harland & Wolff, Canberra ’s builders.

The Logistics of the British Recovery of the Falkland Islands 1982 Stephen Badsey There is a saying—now a military cliché—attributed to several senior army and navy commanders of the mid-20th century, that amateurs or juniors discuss tactics, while their seniors and other professionals discuss logistics; a saying that has been qualified in recent decades by the view that the most senior and professional decisions of all are concerned with force generation, the creation of the formations needed for a possible future war.1 Logistics, together with force generation, was very obviously of critical importance to the British recovery of the Falkland Islands in April-June 1982. Port Stanley, the Falklands’ capital and only town, is considerably further from London than Tokyo is. The British won chiefly because of their ability, in an improvised military campaign for which they had no prior planning, to project and sustain a Task Force consisting of a Carrier Task Group and an Amphibious Task Group across a distance of over 12,000 kilometres. A vital role was played by the small British territory of Ascension Island in the South Atlantic, just over half way to the Falklands. A lesser but still important role was played by the British recovery early in the campaign of the island of South Georgia, which in 1982 was part of the Falkland Islands Dependencies, and is about 1,500 kilometres east of East Falkland. However, the lack of a secure harbour or port facility of any size on either Ascension Island or South Georgia imposed a severe time limit on how long the British warships could remain in the South Atlantic before they would need to leave the area for essential maintenance.2 The most basic logistic requirements for the Falklands War, as for most wars of this period, were ammunition, fuel, food, medical support, maintenance, and transport.
