Our Islands, Our History
Our Islands, Our History WHAT Are the FAlklAnd IslAnds? Who are Falkland Islanders and what does it mean to be a citizen of our country? These are questions which Islanders are asked frequently but to which there are no quick answers. Our history goes some way towards explaining what it is to be a Falkland Islander. It is a fairly short history. Settlement is relatively recent: it began in the eighteen century and has only been continuous from the early nineteenth century. Unlike the Spanish and Portuguese colonial empires, we never had an indigenous population, so we have no ancient monuments or romantic mythologies to define our identity as Islanders. Other people have spun their own myths around our history and this explains why there are so many misconceptions about who we are and about our right to call the Falklands our home. The series of events which serve as the foundations upon which the Falkland Islands were built are what Our Islands, Our History aims to set out. Our history is one of long periods of tranquillity, punctuated by flurries of complex activity. The events of the 1760s and 1770s are involved but, with the help of the time line running throughout this publication, hopefully comprehensible. The period 1820 to 1833 is also complex and further complicated by the tendency to weave nationalist myths around the basic narrative. Although not a heavyweight reference document, this book is intended to explain to the interested reader how our diverse community has matured, embracing influences from the many nations whose sailors visited these shores or who settled in the Islands, developing a cultural identity all of our own, but always maintaining a close kinship with Britain. -

She is the 3rd of the Bay Class and the 2nd to have been built in AGovan Ship Yard, Glasgow, Scotland. The ship left the Yard in early August and spent the rest of 2006 and early 2007, developing herself and crew into an operational capable platform. Formally welcomed to the Fleet on 6 March 2007 follow her story from launch to operational deployment. CALL THE HANDS NHSA DIGITAL NEWSLETTER Issue No.16 February 2018 From the President Welcome to our first edition of Call the Hands for 2018. Since December, the wreck of HMAS AE1 has been discovered, STS Young Endeavour celebrated 30 years of service and Society members have been involved in several interesting activities. In the week prior to Christmas the discovery of HMAS AE1, excited the nation and ended the Navy’s longest mystery. AE1 was lost off the island of Rabaul on 14 September 1914 with all 35 crew members. The wreck site will remain ‘close held’ by Find AE1 Expedition member organisations until appropriate measures are taken to protect the site. Expedition leader, retired Rear Admiral Peter Briggs who has worked much of his life to find HMAS AE1 and his colleagues are saluted for this historic achievement. On 16 January the Commanding Officer HMAS Hobart, Captain John Stavridis and Supply Officer, Lieutenant Commander Mark Lee visited the Boatshed to acquaint themselves with an important HMAS Hobart heritage item, the Captain’s table from HMAS Hobart (I). The Society has held the table in trust since Hobart (II) decommissioned in May 2000. Descendants of HMAS Patricia Cam crew members and the community marked the 76th anniversary of her loss with a series of events in Darwin, Gosford, Sydney and Canberra from 20 to 22 January. Patricia Cam sank on 22 January 1943 after being bombed by a Japanese float plane. Society members participated in the Gosford (plaque unveiling where she was built) and Canberra last post ceremony at the Australian War Memorial. -
The Distribution, Abundance and Population Trends of Gentoo, Rockhopper and King Penguins in the Falkland Islands
The distribution, abundance and population trends of gentoo, rockhopper and king penguins in the Falkland Islands M. Bingham The Falkland Islands are a globally important breeding location for seabirds, including penguins. The total breeding populations of three of the four main penguin species present in the Falklands were censused in the austral summer of1995/96. The results for gentoo and rockhopper penguins suggest declines of about 43 and 90 per cent, respectively, since a similar census in 1932/33. Recent monitoring studies suggest that these declines are still continuing; research to investigate causes (which is likely to reflect changes in the marine, rather than terrestrial environment) is a high priority. In contrast, king penguin populations, currently c. 400 pairs, have increased steadily, by 700 per cent since 1980/81, in line with world-wide trends for this species. San Carlos to Goose Green
2017 saw the 35th Anniversary of the Falkland Islands conflict. In January 2017, Sandra and I visited the Falkland Islands and took the battlefield tour from San Carlos to Goose Green. The personal recollection of that tour forms the basis of this evening’s presentation. Back in April 1982, two questions were on the lips of many in the UK: 1) Why should we worry about people living on an island that had been overrun by Argentina, and 2) Where are the Falkland Islands anyway? In 1982, the population of the Falkland Islands was approx. 1830 with the majority residing in and around the capital Port Stanley. The islands are a British overseas territory with the then Governor Rex Hunt representing the Queen and her government in the UK. Most residents had voted to remain British and so the PM at the time, Margaret Thatcher, with respect for their wishes, sent a military task force to secure their release and give them their freedom from Argentine aggression. The Falkland Islands are situated in the South Atlantic Ocean approx. 8000 miles away. Ascension Island is a barren rocky outcrop which benefits from a long airstrip. The base is shared between the British and US military. In 1982, Ascension Island was used as a steppingstone on the way to the islands. Troop ships took between 5 - 6 weeks to cover the distance from Portsmouth to Falkland Islands. We were fortunate to travel via the air bridge from RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire to RAF Mount Pleasant in the Falkland Islands, with a brief stopover at Ascension Island to refuel, the journey taking only about 20 hours. -

Recent British debates about defence policy and military capabilities have revealed a lack of understanding of the roles of aircraft carriers and amphibious forces. This paper provides a historical survey aiming to offer some empirical evidence to help correct this weakness. Aircraft carriers and amphibious forces have a repeatedly proven ability to conduct the more common smaller-scale operations alone or to act as the foundation enablers of rarer, larger-scale operations; they are particularly well suited to long- term engagement, crisis prevention, deterrence and early action that can make larger scale intervention unnecessary; and air bases and overflight rights have again and again proved unavailable or inadequate despite policy assumptions to the contrary. This survey shows the options and flexibility that carriers and amphibious ships have provided for policy makers over many years in just the sort of activities and operations that are likely to be required of the British armed forces in the future. Carriers and amphibious forces are not a strategic panacea and have limitations in their ability to dominate ground and in the scale of effort that they can take on without the backing of land-based forces. Nevertheless, they offer unique advantages and are essential for a viable British strategy. Dr Tim Benbow is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Defence Studies, King’s College London, at the JSCSC.
