SHIPS PENNANT NUMBERS 17/06/2011 Please Email Any SHIPS PENNANT NUMBERS The Royal Navy Pennant Numbering System Pennant, or Pendant, numbers were introduced to help to abbreviate signalling and to help make signals more secure, they also served to clear up confusion between ships with similar names and as an aid in identifying ships visually, particularly where ships of the same classification were grouped in a Squadron. During the war, many ships were transferred between Commonwealth and Allied Navies. Where this did occur, the ship usually kept the same Pennant Number (even though the ships name may well have changed). If a ship was sunk in action, it was usual for the Pennant Number of that ship to be allocated to the next ship to be launched. Renaming of ships was also regularly carried out. During and after the war, some ships had received up to three or four changes of Flag Superior, with many destroyers changing from F to G in 1940, then to L, and later to R, and finally to D after the war. Usually, ships of the same Classification were grouped under the same Flag Superior, although this wasn’t always the case. Due to shear numbers of ships in the Second World War a greater number of Flag Superior allocations were in use. Today, the Flag Superior generally helps to identify the Class of ship, i.e. A – Auxiliaries, D = Destroyers, F = Frigates, R = Aircraft Carriers (A already in use for Auxiliaries), S = Submarine. Until the Second World War, it was usual for submarines to have only a Pennant Number and no name, Winston Churchill directed that all Submarines be named. Some minor ships had no Pennant Number, whilst others had them removed from photographs due to censorship. It is believed that the pennant system was last revised in 1947. Some of the information on the lists was gleaned from an old copy of the BR619 (Admiralty Book of Reference) and publication contained a number in brackets following the Flag Superior heading. The number in brackets is the amount of space allocated to the number of vessels in that section, for additions. Some of the allocations were not used, whilst others may have been exceeded. The following is a list of official class designators and their meanings for United Kingdom Ships under Naval control by class. The list was taken from an Unclassified NATO document: LPH Amphibious Assault PP Patrol Vessel, AFS Combat Stores Ship Ship General AG Auxiliary, LSL Landing Ship, Miscellaneous Logistic AGH Auxiliary • Anke-Beate Stahl
Anke-Beate Stahl Norse in the Place-nam.es of Barra The Barra group lies off the west coast of Scotland and forms the southernmost extremity of the Outer Hebrides. The islands between Barra Head and the Sound of Barra, hereafter referred to as the Barra group, cover an area approximately 32 km in length and 23 km in width. In addition to Barra and Vatersay, nowadays the only inhabited islands of the group, there stretches to the south a further seven islands, the largest of which are Sandray, Pabbay, Mingulay and Bemeray. A number of islands of differing sizes are scattered to the north-east of Barra, and the number of skerries and rocks varies with the tidal level. Barra's physical appearance is dominated by a chain of hills which cuts through the island from north-east to south-west, with the peaks of Heaval, Hartaval and An Sgala Mor all rising above 330 m. These mountains separate the rocky and indented east coast from the machair plains of the west. The chain of hills is continued in the islands south of Barra. Due to strong winter and spring gales the shore is subject to marine erosion, resulting in a ragged coastline with narrow inlets, caves and natural arches. Archaeological finds suggest that farming was established on Barra by 3000 BC, but as there is no linguistic evidence of a pre-Norse place names stratum the Norse immigration during the ninth century provides the earliest onomastic evidence. The Celtic cross-slab of Kilbar with its Norse ornaments and inscription is the first traceable source of any language spoken on Barra: IEptir porgerdu Steinars dottur es kross sja reistr', IAfter Porgero, Steinar's daughter, is this cross erected'(Close Brooks and Stevenson 1982:43).

  • ASTRA MILITARUM SOLDIERS of the IMPERIUM These Datasheets Allow You to Fight Apocalypse Battles with Your Astra Militarum Miniatures
ASTRA MILITARUM SOLDIERS OF THE IMPERIUM These datasheets allow you to fight Apocalypse battles with your Astra Militarum miniatures. Each datasheet includes the characteristics profiles of the unit it describes, as well as any wargear and special abilities it may have. KEYWORDS Throughout these datasheets you will come across the <Regiment> keyword. This is shorthand for a keyword of your choosing, as described below. <REGIMENT> Most Astra Militarum units are drawn from a regiment. Some datasheets specify which regiment the unit is drawn from (e.g. Mukaali Riders have the Tallarn keyword, so are drawn from the Tallarn Regiment), but where a datasheet does not, it will have the <Regiment> keyword. When you include such a unit in your army, you must nominate which regiment that unit is from. You then simply replace the <Regiment> keyword in every instance on that unit’s datasheet with the name of your chosen regiment. For example, if you were to include an Atlas Recovery Tank in your army, and you decided it was from Vostroya, its <Regiment> Faction keyword is changed to Vostroyan and its Recovery Vehicle ability would then read: ‘At the end of the Action phase, this unit can to repair one friendly Vostroyan Vehicle unit in base contact with it. If it does, remove one damage marker from that Vehicle unit. Only one attempt to repair each unit can be made each turn.’ ATLAS RECOVERY TANK 5 An Atlas Recovery Tank is a unit that contains 1 model.
