Revised 03/18 Table Rules for Spring Run Clubhouse The following guidelines have been compiled to unify and establish the House Rules for American Canasta at the Spring Run Clubhouse. Should there be questions on Rules or Guidelines, the Facilitator will make a judgement.

Canasta is played with 2 decks of cards = 108. Each deck includes 2 Jokers = 4. The winner of the game is the first team to score a total of 8500 points.

Canasta * A canasta consists of seven (7) cards. * A Natural or Pure canasta is 7 of the same card with NO wild cards and is indicated by closing it with a red card on top. * A Dirty or Mixed canasta must have 5 of the number as a minimum with 2 Wild Cards (2 and Jokers) and is indicated by closing it with a black card on top. * A Mixed or Dirty Canasta can NEVER have more than 2 Wild cards.

Point Value of Each Card * 5 point card - 4, 5, 6, & 7 * 10 point card - 8, 9, 10, J, Q, & K * 20 point card - and 2 * 50 point card - Jokers

The and Deal * Begins with the person on the right of the dealer cutting the deck. * The bottom portion is dealt one at a time until each player has 13 cards. * The player who cuts takes 8 cards from the bottom of the top cut and places them in the tray with a 9th card at right angle. This is one of the 2 Talons.

The Play * Begins with each person picking and discarding in turn until they are able to meld the required amount. * If the player is not Picking the Pack, then the player must draw from the stock pile before doing anything else. If the player forgets, it is lost. * Seven’s and Aces CAN NOT be discarded on a bare tray. * Once a number is closed, the other team cannot use the number for melding. It is a DEAD card. * A DEAD card can be discarded on a bare tray. Never Seven’s or Aces. * Players may not discuss where to place Wild Cards, strategies, picking the pack or any play decisions. The only exception is the one time question of Going Out. * Card thrown by last the player is STILL alive and the next player may Pick the Pack

Discards * Wild Cards can never be discarded, except when to Go Out. * A player can only look at the last 3 discards. * Sevens and Aces can never be discarded on a bare tray. * A player must have one card to hold and one to discard, except to Go Out.

Three’s * When a 3 has been dealt or drawn, it is placed on the table and replaced by another card. This is even done at the 2nd (last 8 cards) * If the to be drawn is a 3, the player adds it to their score with no other discard. In other words GAME OVER!!! * The points for 3’s are determined by number of 3’s and if you have 1, 2 or no canastas. Red 3’s 1 = 100 2 = 300 3 = 500 4 = 1000 Black 3’s 1 = 100 2 = 300 3 = 500 4 = 1000 * If you do not have a canasta, these points are negative. * If you have only 1 canasta, 3’s do not count. * If a player forgets to meld & replace a 3, when it is realized, it must be melded immediately, however, the player forfeits replacement. Exception: after 1st turn and after picking talon

Meld * 125 point meld = 0 - 2995 team score * 155 point meld = 3000 - 4995 team score * 180 point meld = 5000 - 8500 team score

One exception: if you have a FULL NATURAL CANASTA IN YOUR HAND it can be played as your opening Point Count. Example: 7 - 5’s are only 25 points (with the Bonus of 500 points for a Pure, canasta)

* A meld is a minimum of 3 cards. * One of the melds must be Natural or Pure (NO WILD CARDS). * The other melds may have 1 or 2 wild cards but must have 2 NATURALS. Example: 8,8,8 is the Natural K,K, and 9,9,2 (mixed/dirty) which adds up to 140 fulfilling the 125 minimum.

2 Talons * One Talon is the bottom 8 cards of the stock pile. * The second Talon is after melding, the team to meld first is entitled to pick 4 cards. * The player may not pick a Talon of 4 or 3 cards once play has reached the last 8 cards (2nd Talon). * The second team to meld picks 3 cards. * The player must first discard then draw the Talon. * The player can NOT play these cards until the next turn. * If the player forgets to pick the Talon, it is lost. * NO TALONS ARE TAKEN IF THE PLAYER PICKS THE PACK.

The Play Continues * Once a team has melded the teammate can add to the melds by using cards from the hand or by picking the pack. * Wild Cards may be added to the initial meld of 3 Natural cards. * Only 2 wild cards are allowed to any meld or canasta. * After the opening Meld, a meld with 2 Naturals and a CANNOT BE MADE. 3 Naturals and a wild card, however, can be played at the same time after the initial meld with the exception of Aces. * All melds must be 3 of a kind. * If a player tries to meld and does not have the correct points after showing the cards, there is a 10 point penalty added to the meld count. Example: 125 becomes 135

Pick the Pack * To Pick the Pack a player must have the necessary meld points from her hand. * The top card CANNOT BE USED to satisfy the Meld Point Count. * The player must prove the 2 natural cards from the hand. * When Picking the Pack, a player may use all of the cards in the hand for the initial meld. There will be a discard available from the pack. * If you have melded 5 of a number and have 2 in hand, you cannot Pick the Pack. Example: 5 - 9’s melded (showing), 2 - 9’s in hand, 1- 9 discarded. All 9’s must be placed on table, which CANNOT be done since a Canasta contains only 7 cards never 8.

Going Out * The team must have at least 2 canastas, can be all pure or mixed. * The player must get rid of all in the cards and have a discard. * Player may ask their partner only ONCE if the partner wants to Go Out * If the round ends by using the entire Stock Pile, no one gets the Bonus Points of 100. * The hands are then scored. * Player must announce when left with three or fewer cards. * Player must ask partner to go out BEFORE placing any cards down on the table. * If player accidentally puts card(s) on the table, player can go out but CAN’T ask partner for permission to go out.

Scoring Points Going Out 100 Natural/Pure/Red Canasta 500 Mixed/Dirty/Black Canasta 300 Aces or 7’s 2500 Wild Card Canasta 2’s and Jokers 2000 Wild Card Canasta with 4 Jokers 2500 Wild Card Canasta with all 2’s 3000 Splash Hands 2500 All pairs = 7 sets of pairs (if you have 2’s or Jokers, you must have 7’s and Aces) Garbage = A 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 J Q K Joker

Scoring * When game ends, each team reckons its total score for the hand. * The team’s score is obtained by adding up the bonuses and/or penalties, and subtracting the point values of the cards left in the hand of the other partner. * If a team has at least one canasta, the point values of all the cards in the melds placed on the table are counted and added up to the total score. * If a team does not have a canasta, the point values of all cards are subtracted from the total score. * The point values of the cards include All Completed Canastas (Wild Card Canastas, and Seven Canastas and Splash Hands). Example: Ace Canasta score would be +2500 pts. plus 140 pts. for Card Count * If a team has 1 Canasta, they score Card Point Count but no score for 3’s.

Sevens * Sevens can NEVER be melded with Wild Card, only naturally (7 of the total 8 -7’s). * The score is 2500 points for a Seven Canasta. * If you do NOT complete the Seven Canasta, a negative 2500 points is taken from your score. * 3 or more 7’s in your hand at the end of a round is a 1500 point penalty (-1500 points). If both partners have 3 or more 7’s, it is a 3000 point penalty (-3000). * Even though you’ve been penalized (-1500) for having 3 or more 7’s in your hand, all points in your hand including those 7’s will count against you. * The pure Sevens canasta must be complete before Going Out. * Sevens can NEVER be discarded onto a bare tray.

Aces * Aces can be melded with a Wild card in the team’s Opening Meld. * After the meld Aces must be Natural or Pure. * Ace Canasta score 2500 points. * If the canasta is NOT complete, it is negative 2500 points (-2500) * 3 or more Aces in your hand at the end of a round is a 1500 point penalty (-1500 points) even if an Ace Canasta is closed. If both partners have 3 or more Aces, it is a 3000 point penalty (-3000). * Even though you’ve been penalized (-1500) for having 3 or more Aces in your hand, all points in your hand including those Aces will count against you * The Ace Canasta must be complete before Going Out. * Aces can NEVER be discarded onto a bare tray.

Wild Card Canastas * A canasta of Wild cards can be made 3 ways * All 2’s * A mixture of 2’s and 2 or 3 Jokers * A mixture of 4 Jokers and 3 - 2’s. * Wilds Cards may be melded in attempt to make a Canasta for the Opening Meld. The meld Point Count must be fulfilled and can be assisted with a natural meld, but NOT a mixed/dirty meld. Example: 5 - 2’s (which equals 100pts) plus 3 - 9’s (which equal 30pts) for a Meld Count of 125 * A Wild Card Canasta MUST be completed before a team may Go Out. * If a Wild Card Canasta is NOT complete, - 2000 points are deducted from the score.

Splash Hands * Can be played as the Opening Count Meld. * The round is now over. * The total score is 2500 WITHOUT counting 3’s or deducting partners Card Point Count. * The other team scores their hand as usual. * A discard on a bare tray can be used to complete a Splash hand. * A Splash Hand can be played after the team’s Meld, but must be made immediately after the next player’s turn. Example: player 1 Melds, player 2 plays, player 3 may Splash. * The only Splash Hands used at Spring Run are the two different pair hands and the garbage hand.
