World premiere performance.

Ola Bilińska and the musicians from the Li- belid project pay a musical tribute to the Baj- gelman Family, who significantly influenced the musical landscape of pre-war Łódź.

Dawid Bajgelman was an extremely versatile musician: a violinist and violist, a conductor, composer, and songwriter. He conducted the Łódź Symphony Orchestra and the orchestra of the Jewish Theatre, recorded albums for Syrena-Electro, and became famous as the author of the music for the performance of The Dybbuk by An-ski. During the war, he founded and conducted a 44-member sym- phony orchestra in the Łódź Ghetto.

Chaim Bajgelman was a violinist, saxophon- ist, and composer and the only one out of nine musical siblings to survive the war. He played professionally since the age of fifteen. He was a member of the family band, The Jolly Boys, which he revived in post-war Ger- many under the name The Happy Boys, play- ing jazz concerts for American soldiers and Jewish survivors. After the war, he emigrated to New York, where he continued his musical activities with The Happy Boys.

Ola Bilińska and her band have arranged the songs of both brothers in contempo- rary forms: pre-war songs, lullabies, and fragments of theatre music now include the sampler, analogue synthesisers and electron- ic vocal effects. In the foreground, however, are the beloved instruments of both broth- ers: the violin and viola. The whole will be supplemented by the sound of two other un- usual string instruments, the cello and the harp. The works of the Bajgelman brothers will be heard at the JCF in a modern, slightly romantic acoustic-electronic version.

The Bajgelman Family’s musical heritage will be introduced by San Francisco business- THE woman Riva Berelson, who is the daughter of Henry (Chaim) Bajgelman. Ms. Berelson is preserving her family’s musical legacy in NAME’S archives, live performances, and contempo- rary recordings in Poland, the United States, and worldwide. This concert marks the pre- BAJGELMAN miere performance. (PL)

29. JCF JUNE 30 28 28 CALENDAR The Tent of Meeting

How beautiful are your tents, Jacob, your dwelling places, Israel! 4 M 24,5

This year, we are putting up our tent in the land of Kazimierz. It will be our common, Festival Tent of Meeting – the centre of events, lectures, work- shops, concerts and meetings. Why a tent? We were inspired by the history of “biblical” tents, starting from the one that Moses put up in the desert to talk to God face to face. The tent, from the beginning of human history, has been inextricably connected with man’s existence. When the Jews, led by Moses, forming the future nation of Israel, set out across the desert to their Promised Land, they lived in tents for forty years. To this day, not to forget it, when they celebrate one of the three pilgrim holidays, the Sukkot Festival, the Jews pray and eat in the so-called Sukkahs which are nothing more than a rep- resentation of these tents. Every day of the seven-day Sukkot Festival, the tent is visited by special guests, the Ushpizin. They are biblical characters, Tzadikim, the righteous, the Seven Faithful Shepherds: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Aar- on and David. They will sit down at the table if you also invite the poor, the excluded, exiles and refugees with them. Especially refugees today. We are all refugees because no one can guarantee that tomorrow we won’t leave our native land and go into the desert of exile. This has happened so many times before. We put up our Tent of Meeting, aware of the unpredictability of history, the fact and warning that nothing is given to man forever. That hard-won freedom may be lost overnight when election results are announced in the morning, or when barbarians stand at the gates of the city. We put up our Tent of Meeting because we want to welcome all of you in- side regardless of where you come from, what faith you profess, what your family language is. We put up our Tent of Meeting in Kazimierz, saddened by the fact that it has become a tourist playground. It’s not a bad thing, but we don’t con- sent that it be treated like a zoo, a place of beer fun and electric cart safari. Kazimierz stands for nearly eight hundred years of Ashkenazi civilization. This is a living place for those who value gradual, unhurried discovering of the beauty of Jewish culture. So we put up our Tent of Meeting in this patch of land that has permanently produced the fruits of Jewish religion, culture and science. The Tent of Meeting is both a symbol of life and its passing. We return to the sources, to the beginnings – Polish nomads on Jewish soil. We open our tent to all who being the fruit of the Earth, are also part of our common Polish-Jewish universe. Bruchim Haba’im! – Blessed are those who come.
