Dawid Bajgelman was an extremely versatile musician: a violinist and violist, a conductor, composer, and songwriter. He conducted the Łódź Symphony Orchestra and the orchestra of the Jewish Theatre, recorded albums for Syrena-Electro, and became famous as the author of the music for the performance of The Dybbuk by An-ski. During the war, he founded and conducted a 44-member sym- phony orchestra in the Łódź Ghetto. Chaim Bajgelman was a violinist, saxophon- ist, and composer and the only one out of nine musical siblings to survive the war. He played professionally since the age of fifteen. He was a member of the family band, The Jolly Boys, which he revived in post-war Ger- many under the name The Happy Boys, play- ing jazz concerts for American soldiers and Jewish survivors. After the war, he emigrated to New York, where he continued his musical activities with The Happy Boys. Ola Bilińska and her band have arranged the songs of both brothers in contempo- rary forms: pre-war songs, lullabies, and fragments of theatre music now include the sampler, analogue synthesisers and electron- ic vocal effects. In the foreground, however, are the beloved instruments of both broth- ers: the violin and viola. The whole will be supplemented by the sound of two other un- usual string instruments, the cello and the harp. The works of the Bajgelman brothers will be heard at the JCF in a modern, slightly romantic acoustic-electronic version. The Bajgelman Family’s musical heritage will be introduced by San Francisco business- THE woman Riva Berelson, who is the daughter of Henry (Chaim) Bajgelman.     ARTIKEL Stefan Hördler · Christoph Kreutzmüller · Tal Bruttmann Auschwitz im Bild Zur kritischen Analyse der Auschwitz-Alben Auschwitz ist besonders in den letzten Jahrzehnten zu dem zentralen Symbol dessen geworden, was wir Holocaust oder Shoah nennen. Neben der Größe des Lager- komplexes, seiner Spezifik als Vernichtungs- und Arbeitslager, der Vielzahl der Opfer wie auch der relativ hohen Zahl von Überlebenden, die Zeugnis ablegen konnten, ist der Umfang der überlieferten zeitgenössischen Fotos sicherlich einer der Gründe für die Strahlkraft und die Wirkmächtigkeit von Auschwitz.1 In einem wechselseitigen Prozess haben die überlieferten Fotos nicht nur die Symbolkraft des Lagerkomplexes verstärkt, sondern auch unsere Vorstellungen von der Ermordung der Juden in Europa nachhaltig geprägt.2 Über die Luftbilder der Royal Air Force, die unter Lebensgefahr heimlich aufgenommenen Fotos des jüdischen Sonderkommandos in den Krematorien von Birkenau, die Bilder und Alben der Zentralbauleitung der Waffen-SS und Polizei Auschwitz, des SS-Standortarztes und weiterer Akteure der SS hinaus sind jedoch im Wesentlichen zwei Alben von besonderer Bedeutung. Während das eine Album mit dem Namen der jüdischen Finderin Lili Jacob verbunden ist, trägt das andere den Namen des ehemaligen Besitzers aus den Reihen der Lager-SS, Karl Höcker. Beyond the theft of dental gold, we actually know very little about the number of camp dentists or even about their activities and how these changed in particular in the final phase of the war. By using as a case study the biography of Willi Schatz, 2nd SS dentist at Auschwitz from January 1944 till autumn 1944, this paper examines the tasks of SS camp dentists in Auschwitz. It points out to what extent the scope of action of the camp dentists changed under the impression of extraordinary events, and clarifies that using the example of the Ungarn Aktion, in which more than 300 000 deportees were immediately murdered. It illustrates that such situational dynamics were an essential driving force for the expansion of dentals tasks. Despite the fact that Schatz was acquitted during the Frankfurt Auschwitz trial (1963–5) for lack of evidence, we show that dentists were not only part of the selection personnel but also high profiteers of the accelerated extermination actions.
