Practical Halachos of Erev Pesach on Shabbos A Halacha Guide of what to do when Erev Pesach falls out on Shabbos, based on the Shulchan Aruch, Poskim, and Shiurim and review from Rav Bezalel Rudinsky. Compiled by Heshy Friedman [email protected] Zmanim for 5781 in Monsey, NY Finish Burning Chametz on Friday – Start of 6th hour: 11:46 AM (GR”A 11:59 AM) Finish Eating Chametz on Shabbos – Start of 5th hour: 10:33 AM (GR”A 10:57 AM) Finish Removing Chametz on Shabbos – Start of 6th hour: 11:47 AM (GR”A 11:59 AM) Shabbos Hagadol Drasha, Taanis Bechorim, & Mechiras Chametz • The Shabbos Hagadol Drasha is generally given on the Shabbos prior to Erev Pesach. • Taanis Bechorim and the customary Siyum to break the fast are on Thursday before Pesach. • Bedikas Chametz is conducted on Thursday night as a regular Bedika with a Brocha. • The first Bittul is declared on Thursday night after the Bedika is concluded. • Some Rabbanim facilitate the sale of the Chametz on Thursday evening prior to the Bedika. Others sell it on Friday. One should know when his Chametz will be sold to make sure to have it labelled prior to the sale. • Rav Rudinsky conducts the sale on Thursday evening, so all those using him as an agent for the sale should have their Chametz designated and sold areas labelled by that time. • A minority opinion allows the sale to be made on Shabbos. One should avoid selling their Chametz with an agent that has the sale take place on Shabbos. Erev Shabbos • Biur Chametz is on Friday prior to the 6th hour of the day. It is performed in the same manner as it is done during a standard year. • All non-designated Chametz that will not be used through Shabbos morning should be removed by the Zman of Biur Chametz. • If one did not burn the Chametz by the 6th hour on Friday, it may still be burned or sold any time before Shabbos. • The second Bittul is postponed to Shabbos morning. (Some opinions suggest an additional Bittul after the Biur Chametz on Friday with a special Nusach.) • Even though it is not possible to have Erev Pesach Matzos this year, there is a Hidur to retain this Minhag with Matzos baked on Friday afternoon. • Salt water and Charoses should be prepared before Shabbos. One should also remember to roast the Zeroa and cook the eggs for the Seder before Shabbos. Shabbos Morning • One should Daven early on Shabbos morning, and come home quickly from Shul. • Challah/Bread should be used for each of the Shabbos Seudos. The bread may be eaten in the dining room with the proper precautions that all is fully clean from Chametz after the meal. • One should preferably eat the bread in the same room where they made Kiddush and are having the rest of the meal. Bidieved both locations should be in sighting distance of each other. • Egg matzah for the Shabbos Seudah should be avoided. However, if one’s wife is insistent on not having Chametz on Shabbos, egg matzah may be used, as this does not supersede Shalom Bayis. • As egg matzah is Mezonos, one needs to have a Shiur Seudah of Daled Beitzim (4 eggs) to be Koveia Seudah. One may combine other foods eaten together with the egg matzah for the Shiur. • One must finish eating any Chametz at the Shabbos Seudah at the beginning of the 5th hour. Removal of Chametz on Shabbos • Leftover Chametz from the Shabbos meal should be flushed down the toilet. Prior to entering the bathroom, one should have in mind to fulfill the Mitzvah of Tashbisu. • Plastic tablecloths and any garbage from the meal should be placed in the garbage and removed to the curb by the 6th hour of the day. • Garbage is theoretically Muktza and only allowed to be moved under the guise of “Graf Shel Rei”. To minimize Muktza, it is advisable to place a garbage can at the curb before Shabbos. • If one uses non-disposable dishes and cutlery for the Shabbos Seudah, they should be wiped down with a paper towel and put away after the meal. • Non-disposable tablecloths should not be shaken outside in the wind, but rather shaken in the garbage or toilet or be hand cleaned. They should be put away prior to the 6th hour. • The second Bittul declaring all Chametz ownerless is done prior to the 6th hour. • After the 6th hour, all Chametz becomes Muktzah. If one finds additional Chametz after that time, he should cover it with a Kli and remove it on Chol Hamoed, or have a non-Jew remove it. Shalosh Seudos and Shabbos Afternoon • To satisfy the opinions requiring Shalosh Seudos with bread, one should ideally split the morning meal by Benching, washing again, and finish eating Chametz by the 5th hour. One should preferably have a break of 15 minutes between the meals, and should walk away from the table. • To satisfy the opinions requiring Shalosh Seuodos in the afternoon, an afternoon meal should be eaten with fruits, meat or fish, as neither matza nor challah may be eaten at that time. • One may not have Gebroktzk cake or Erev Pesach. However, Kneidlech would be permitted as they do not have a form of bread. • One must limit the amount of food he eats on Shabbos afternoon to ensure he comes to the Seder with an appetite for Achilas Matza. • There are various opinions regarding reciting the Haggadah on Shabbos afternoon on Erev Pesach. Rav Rudinsky’s preference is not to say it this year. .
