NEW YORK : CHARLES SCRIBNER'S SONS I DEDICATE THIS BOOK TO FRANK ROOKE LEY PREFACE Itf the following pages I have attempted to give a brief account of the famous school of painting that originated in Ferrara about the middle of the fifteenth century, and thence not only extended its influence to the other cities that owned the sway of the House of Este, but spread over all Emilia and Romagna, produced Correggio in Parma, and even shared in the making of Raphael at Urbino. Correggio himself is not included : he is too great a figure in Italian art to be treated as merely the member of a local school ; and he has already been the subject of a separate monograph in this series. The classical volumes of Girolamo Baruffaldi are still indispensable to the student of the artistic history of Ferrara. It was, however, Morelli who first revealed the importance and significance of the Perrarese school in the evolution of Italian art ; and, although a few of his conclusions and conjectures have to be abandoned or modified in the light of later researches and dis- coveries, his work must ever remain our starting-point. vii viii PREFACE The indefatigable researches of Signor Adolfo Venturi have covered almost every phase of the subject, and it would be impossible for any writer now treating of Perrarese painting to overstate the debt that he must inevitably owe to him. -

Quart 2020, 3 PL ISSN 1896-4133 [s. 87-104] Bologna and its porticoes: a thousand years’ pursuit of the “common good” Francesca Bocchi Università di Bologna Rosa Smurra Università di Bologna Bologna from late antiquity to the early Middle Ages It is well known that Bologna boasts a remarkable architectural feature that distinguishes it from other European cities and towns1: the long sequence of façade porticoes lining most of its streets, both in the historic city centre and in parts of the suburbs. To those born in Bologna or who have lived there for many years, this distinctive characteristic seems obvious, but it did not appear by chance nor over a short time. It was the result of a long process that has its origins almost a thousand years ago, when documentary evidence shows that certain dwellings were built with porticoes and, more interestingly, these porticoes, for both private and public use, were built not on public land but on private property. In order to understand the evolution of this complex property law system, it is necessary to outline the phases of urban development, determined by political, social and economic factors, adapting the urban fabric to various needs over a long period of time spanning from the crisis of late antiquity to the 13th and 14th centuries [Fig. 1]. The Roman city of Bononia was a well laid out settlement, extending over an area of about 40 ha [Fig. 1A]. Cardines and decumani formed an orthogonal plan where archaeological research shows that the dwellings were built without porticoes2. The political and economic crisis affecting the Roman Empire from the 3rd century onwards reached both town and country: Bononia also felt it severely. -

Repository: Harry Ransom Center, The University of Texas at Austin Ranuzzi Family Manuscript Collection MS-03401 Scope and Contents In 1968 the Ransom Center purchased 620 volumes of manuscripts and printed matter collected by the Ranuzzi family of Bologna, Italy, that reflect some 400 years of Bolognese political, religious, and cultural life. While the collection dates from a group of medical manuscripts gathered by Antonio Ranuzzi, a physician and scholar, it was Count Vincenzo Antonio Ranuzzi (1658-1726) who was largely responsible for the formation of the Ranuzzi Library. Through the influence of his grandfather, the Marquis Ferdinando Cospi, who spent the major part of his life at the court of the Grand Dukes of Tuscany, Count Ranuzzi was received in 1671 as a Page to Prince Ferdinand de Medici. -

The book represents a definitive moment of cohesion between the two most conspicuous cultural developments of the early Renaissance, namely, humanism and the visual arts. This dissertation reconstructs the intellectual and visual environments in which Alberti moved before he entered Florence in the curia of Pope Eugenius IV in 1434, one year before the recorded date of completion of De pictura. For the two decades prior to his arrival in Florence, from 1414 to 1434, Alberti resided in Padua, Bologna, and Rome. Examination of specific textual and visual material in those cities – sources germane to Alberti’s humanist and visual development, and thus to the ideas put forth in De pictura – has been insubstantial. This dissertation will therefore present an investigation into the sources available to Alberti in Padua, Bologna and Rome, and will argue that this material helped to shape the prescriptions in Alberti’s canonical Renaissance tract. By more fully accounting for his intellectual and artistic progression before his arrival in Florence, this forensic reconstruction aims to fill a gap in our knowledge of Alberti’s formative years and thereby underline impact of his early career upon his development as an art theorist. -

Did Nicholas of Cusa Talk with Muslims? Revisiting Cusanus’ Sources for the Cribratio Alkorani and Interfaith Dialogue *
DID NICHOLAS OF CUSA TALK WITH MUSLIMS? REVISITING CUSANUS’ SOURCES FOR THE CRIBRATIO ALKORANI AND INTERFAITH DIALOGUE * Maarten Halff Independent researcher Abstract While Cusanus’ literary sources for his engagement with Islam have been closely studied, questions about possible personal encounters with Muslims, and the role of non-literary sources in developing his concept of interreligious dialogue, remain largely unaddressed. This paper presents original archival research to identify the only person whom Cusanus mentions in the Cribratio Alkorani by name as an oral source about Muslim beliefs – an Italian merchant active in Constantinople at the time of Cusanus’ visit in 1437. In doing so, it casts new light on Cusanus’ treatises on Islam and on his interaction with Muslims. UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Female Biographies in Renaissance and Post-Tridentine Italy A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Italian by Sienna Star Hopkins 2016 © Copyright by Sienna Star Hopkins 2016 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Female Biographies in Renaissance and Post-Reformation Italy by Sienna Star Hopkins Doctor of Philosophy in Italian University of California, Los Angeles, 2016 Professor Massimo Ciavolella, Chair This dissertation explores the development of female biography in Renaissance Italy, particularly highlighting the thematic changes the genre experienced as a result of the Counter Reformation, and how the female ideals it portrayed often conflicted with the societal expectations of the donna illustre. The first chapters lay the groundwork for this investigation by providing a survey of the biographical genre in Italy and its ancient Greek and Roman influences, then highlighting the cultural attitudes about women as portrayed in querelle literature and female conduct manuals of 16th and 17th-century Italy. These communicate the standard of expected behavior for women in the Italian Renaissance, by which the female protagonists of biographies are measured, and the juxtaposition reveals that while the protagonists in the earlier biographies generally conform to the standards of contemporary conduct manuals, those in Post Tridentine ii biographies do not. Their protagonists are instead lauded for their fervent, often extreme, religious practices and for their inward search for humility. The investigation thus reveals the genre’s shift in focus to be one that moves from the civic to the religious, from the public donna illustre to the private donna umile. -
