HOW TO MAKE A SASH

Method One: For those low on time and/or resources

1 SUPPLIES NEEDED

1.Any white ribbon at least 1.5" wide. This one was purchased second-hand, most likely floral ribbon 2. Scissors 3. Newspaper 4. Purple, yellow and black permanent markers 5. Safety pin

2 MEASURING

Hold the ribbon at your shoulder and stretch it diagonally to approximately 2" past your opposite hip. Double the ribbon and then cut it.

3 ADDING THE STRIPES

Using newspaper to protect your work surface, color a stripe of purple down one entire side of your ribbon and a yellow stripe down the other.

4 ADDING THE SLOGAN

Choose a slogan. Fold your sash in half so you make sure you are only writing the slogan on what will be the front. Use a black permanent marker and your best handwriting to add the slogan.

5 FINISHING

Put your slash on so the slogan is in front. Use a saftey pin to pin the two ends together.

6 WEAR WITH PRIDE

As Lebanon Township Committeman Tom McKee did at a township meeting where a proclamation honoring 100 Years of was read by Councilwoman Beverly Koehler, seen here in full costume.

Method Two: For those with slightly more time or resources 1 SUPPLIES NEEDED

1. White grosgrain ribbon, 3" wide 2. Measuring tape 3. Scissors 4. Newspaper or disposable tablecloth 5. Masking tape 6. Fabric paint in purple, yellow and black 7. Paintbrushes 8. Letter stencils, thin permanent black marker OR photo transfer paper and iron 9. Paper towels 10. Safety pin

2 MEASURING

Measure from your shoulder diagonally to your opposite hip. Add 2-3" and double: this is the length of ribbon that you will need to cut.

3 ADDING THE STRIPES

Using newspaper or disposable tablecloth to protect your work surface, stick the masking tape directly down the center of the ribbon. Leave a extra tape on either end to hold ribbon in place. Using paint brushes, paint a light layer of purple down one side of your ribbon and yellow down the other. Let dry fully then carefully peel the tape off.

4 GET READY FOR THE SLOGAN

Fold your sash in half and then use the tape measure to find the half-way spot on just the front; marking it very lightly with pencil. Write your slogan on a piece of paper to find its exact center.

5 ADDING THE SLOGAN

When using photo transfer paper, we found using font size 92 was best for a 3" wide ribbon sash with stripes. Follow the package instructions to apply. When using stencils, we found fabric paint or very fine point black permanent marker worked best. For stencils or freehand fabric paint, we found it easiest to start with our center letters at the midway mark and work our way outwards.

6 FINISHING & WEARING

Put your slash on so the slogan is in front. Use a safety pin to pin the two ends together. Kathy opted to not write a slogan on hers, she instead is using it to wear various pins from protests she's attended over the years. Here she is with Sheila who swears none of this was hard to do, even though she is a self-proclaimed "not crafty at all" type of person!

Method Three: For those with a sewing machine and some sewing experience

1 SUPPLIES NEEDED

1. White grosgrain ribbon, 3" wide. 2. Measuring tape 3. Scissors 4. Purple binding ribbon 5. Yellow binding ribbon 6. Purple thread 7. Yellow thread 8. Letter stencils, black fabric paint, paintbrush OR 9. Letter stencils, thin permanent black marker OR 10. Photo transfer paper and iron 11. Safety pin or sew-on Velcro

2 MEASURING

Measure from your shoulder diagonally to your opposite hip. Add 2-3" and double: this is the length ribbon, purple binding and yellow binding you need to cut.

3 ADDING THE STRIPES

Open up the purple binding tape and pin it in place down one entire side of the white ribbon. Use purple thread to sew it in place. Repeat on other side with yellow binding tape and yellow thread.

4 GET READY FOR THE SLOGAN

Fold your sash in half and then use the tape measure to find the half-way spot on just the front; marking it very lightly with pencil. Write your slogan on a piece of paper to find its exact center.

6 WEAR WITH PRIDE

Though she has not yet committed to the slogan she likes best, our antique dress form "Jane" wears her sash plain for now (Plain Jane?) while proudly holding her protest sign. The ends on this sash are fastened together via sew-on Velcro but a safety pin works just as well.

2 POINTERS

In our experience, fabric markers didn't always work as well as thin permanent markers (above left). Take our advice and try different marker types, sizes, fabric paints and stencil sizes on a piece of scrap fabric before trying it on your sash.

If using fabric paint and a stencil, keep papertowels handy to wipe the stencil off between each letter to avoid smudging. 3 MODERNIZE & HAVE FUN

Unless you are entering a contest that gives points for historical accuracy, there's no reason you can add some modern flair to your sash. We definitely used some modern slogans on our samples and future sashes may include some rhinestones or glitter!
