GVVCVC Journal December 2015 Page 2

THE PINERY FIRE: Wednesday 25 th November As this edition of the Journal was being prepared for print, we became aware of smoke to east of us at Port Parham. Within 30 minutes we were aware that a fire had started at Pinery and was heading towards Mallala with strong north to north west winds. At about 2.20pm the power went off, and 10 minutes later the wind swung to a very strong westerly. We commented “the CFS is going to be busy”. Little did we know the devastation that was to occur, with the loss of life and property. There will be few members of the Gawler Veteran Vintage and Classic Vehicle Club who have not been impacted, either directly or through family and friends who have suffered loss in some way. Allan Tiller who lost his life at Pinery, was a lifelong associate of your editor, we played football together in Primary School when the Long Plains and Pinery schools combined to field a team once a year, and then we attended Balaklava High School together. Allan’s wife, Jenny was in the same class at Balaklava as myself. Janet Hughes , of Hamley Bridge, who sadly lost her life whilst returning home, was very active in the community, and had been preparing for the Christmas Street Party which this club participates in. The impact on those who live in the area of the fire will be tremendous, and ranges from total loss of homes, buildings, machinery, fences, stock, pets, crops and feed, to the loss of all pasture ground. The latter has been complete through the fire area, and farmers are now facing the challenge of finding feed for their remaining stock. For intensive agriculture such as pigs and chickens, this has been further compounded by damage to the Ridley Feed Mill at Woolsheds which has removed that source of feed stocks. The loss of pasture cover will give rise to soil drift across the area, and any strong winds will result in dust storms. This is unlikely to improve until seasonal rains arrive in April/May. At the time of writing, all the Christmas festivity preparation continues to be in full swing, and the Mallala, Two Wells, Freeling and Hamley Bridge Street parades are still on. Full details follow this report and you are urged to take your vehicles along to these parades as a sign of support and a “cheer up” to those communities which have been affected. A number of our me mbers have been directly impacted by the fires. Keith and Leonie Kluske at Woolsheds were fortunate to keep their home but lost 2 other houses on their property, including Leonie’s childhood home. As a result 2 tenants are now without a home. Keith’s club registered Wolseley and a Morris Minor were garaged at these premises and were lost. The Kluske family, in common with many other farmers also lost machinery in paddocks in the midst of harvesting. At the time of writing the situation for former members Bill and Margaret Johnson is unknown. Bill and Margaret have retired to Balaklava but their property (and Bill’s collection) is within 1 Km of the ignition point. Our President, Fred and Noeline Chapman’s property forms the southern boundary of the fire zone. They sustained minor damage but Fred received an eye injury whilst fighting the fire, necessitating medical treatment. Trevor Lowe is a brother to club member Glenys Sambell , and he has suffered total loss. Trevor is a well known supplier of pea straw to the district and beyond. Mike and Deb Williams’ daughter Belinda lives on the outskirts of Daveyston and lost a number of outbuildings but house is OK. Allan and Cynthia Kempster spent an anxious night as the rear boundary of property was affected, and they wanted to be sure that trees did not catch alight, but they have no property damage. Reports are that all is well with Graham Ferris , who lives on Barraba road near Mallala, although two near neighbours lost their homes. Bob Houston at Hamley Bridge advises that all is OK with them, although he spent time putting out spot fires on their property. Many historical properties, some up to 150 years old, were lost. These include the former Grace Plains, Barabba, and Pinkerton Plains Schools, the Murphy homestead at Murphys crossing, Gwenbank, and Woolsheds homestead (owned by Keith and Leonie Kluske).

As a result of this devastating event, this Journal is a little late in getting to you. DONATIONS TO PINERY FIRE RELIEF WILL BE ACCEPTED AT THE DECEMBER MEETING

2015 Two Wells Christmas Parade Friday 11 th December. The GVVCVC has been invited to take part in the Annual Two Wells Xmas Parade again this year. They have indicated that they can accept up to about 15 vehicles. This event is very well patronized with several thousand people attending each year. The street parade starts at 1900 hrs, (7pm) and proceeds along Old Pt Wakefield Road from Wells Road to the oval and return (two runs of the main street). The start location is on Wells Road adjacent to the CFS Station. The main street will be closed from 4.30pm to 9.00 pm. Access for our vehicles is available through the barrier in front of the Two Wells Tavern (the corner Old Pt Wakefield and Gawler Roads) vehicles should be in place on Wells Road 30 mins prior to start. (ie by 6.30pm) At the conclusion of the run feel free to park your vehicle and return to enjoy the rest of the evening amongst the stalls and food outlets I would suggest early reply as I think this will be very popular. BOOKINGS ARE ESSENTIAL. Even-if you can't be part of the parade come along and enjoy the event. Members wishing to attend or needing more information can contact Bob Dyer 8520 3601 or 0427 616 090. She will be continuing Michael’s membership of GVVCVC Ron Stephens Membership Secretary G.V.V & C.V.C

Time to step up! There are plenty of opportunities for you as club members to be more actively involved in running the club. You have received a letter asking if you can assist by taking on part of a couple of roles. Many of the activities in running the club have been done by long term members for many years, and these members are finding it difficult to continue due to illness or age. Some are doing multiple jobs. A common saying is “many hands make light work”, so we ask you please to consider if you can do all or part of a number of duties. The following roles require people to get involved now. Mentoring is available. − Motorfest Coordinator : to coordinate the activities of the Gawler Club for Motorfest in the lead up to the Bay to Birdwood. Trevor Unsworth has done this for a number of years, but will not do it this year, but he can offer lots of advice. This role needs to start now for 2016 − Swap Meet Activity leaders : People are required to learn about set up, security management, parking management etc so that they can take over these roles. Talk to Mike Williams, Corrie Wake, or Bob Carr about what is involved. Preparation starts in about March for the activity in September. − Special Events Coordinator : As mentioned in the recent letter, a person to organize our 4 or 5 special events each year (eg Annual Dinner, Christmas Dinner, All British Day breakfast, Australia Day etc) − Editor : As mentioned in the October edition and in the letter to members. It may be possible to establish an editorial team to reduce the workload/complexity of this job. The current editor will cease editorial duties after the June edition (unless someone takes it on earlier). − Treasurer : the current treasurer would like to hand of this responsibility to someone with appropriate treasurer/book keeping skills. If no one puts their hand up some of these activities may cease, which could be disastrous for the club. DEADLINE FOR FEBRUARY 2016 EDITION FRIDAY JAN 22 nd 2016 GVVCVC Journal December 2015 Page 5

Are there Club Rooms in our future? Further to the report in the October Journal, most members will, by now, be aware that proposals by the club to occupy the former skate park slab in Princess Park have been rejected by the Gawler Council. However the Council has committed to explore other options for club use within the Council area. The GVVCVC Committee is actively involved with the Council in exploring these options. However, the question needs to be raised, does the membership require the committee to consider these options? There is little point in proceeding if the majority of the membership do not support such a move. Basic arguments for establishing a club property are: − A place to store club assets such as the car trailer, barbeque trailer, signs, swap meet tools etc − A starting point for club runs − A location for smaller social activities − A meeting place for the committee − Possibly a workshop for restoration activities Arguments against establishing a club property are − Who is going to manage the property? Volunteers seem to be difficult to find − Security management issues − Ongoing costs: power, security, property maintenance, water and power rates, council rates or property leasing costs etc If you feel strongly on either option, it may be good to bring things to a head by presenting a motion to the AGM, to ensure that the feelings of the majority of members are aired. RESTORATION TROPHY 1957 ‘D’ type Jaguar

The intent of this Trophy is to encourage members to finish a project that has been lying idle for some time. Hands on restoration is preferred to cheque book restoration 1. It is to be a perpetual trophy. Starting from 1 st July each year & closing 30 th June the following year. e.g. 1 st July 2015 -30 th June2016 2. The outgoing committee at the time decides who is to receive the trophy. (In the case of a tie or dispute, the clubs Restoration Coordinator will have final say.) 3. To be presented each year at the GVVCVC Annual Dinner. To make it work. a. The Committee / Restoration Coordinator will hold a Register of member’s Vehicles (cars, motorbikes) being restored that may be finished in the near future. b. Start date of restoration is irrelevant; c. Members will need to produce some record of work carried out; e.g. photograph’s as purchased, work in progress, receipts, Diary. d. Eligibility to receive the trophy: Have your vehicle historically registered & take it on one official club run before the 30 th of June of the current year. It is probably the only time any club member will ever have the chance to be the custodian of a D type JAGUAR for 12 months! Register your project with the Restoration Coordinator, Trevor Evans, phone 8280 7598 or email [email protected] The following projects have been nominated amongst others:

Peter Dalton’s Vauxhall ute Alvin Jenkin’s P3 Rover (but that bloke is more handsome than Alvin!)

A funny thing Happened…….! Our regular contributor “eyes and ears” has been missing in action, but it does not stop observable occurrences! • The November meeting must have been boring, as one of the members had to entertain us with the “Mexican Hat Dance”, not just once, but twice. • A fabulous report on the “Miss Fisher” outing presented at the meeting by David, complete with paper based auto prompts, a couple of sheets of which went missing. David had never heard of Miss Fisher, and is now finding out on what he had been missing per favour club members loaning him and Pam a DVD. • And that is a Hispano Suiza (pronounced Soo Eez Aah), David (perhaps a prompt for a Journal Article on this historic Spanish marque) • Whilst on Miss Fisher, the editor drove his Rover into the Bring Your Car meeting with his bowler hat on, and got challenged for not wearing the pinstripe suit, only to be outclassed completely by the Butler’s in the REO and full 1920’s regalia as displayed on the Miss Fisher run. • The presentation of the electric car was proving to be rather silent, just like the car. The club portable PA system was on the “blip – blip – blip”. Events director Bruce came to the rescue with the megaphone. Thanks Bruce! • It seems that our Mallala member had clutch problems with the Austin and had to head off early from the November meeting to ensure he got home OK. I think that he caught Alvin disease! • A lady at the Bring Your Car night approached the editor and said “you have 2 badges, and I have none, can I have one”. When the Editor was very pleased to give her the Editor’s Badge, she went into shock and disappeared. I keep trying!

"Vot do you mean it's illegal?" asks the German driver. "Quattro meansa four" replies the Italian official. "Quattro is just ze name of ze f****** automobile" the German says unbelievingly. "Look at ze gott dam papers: ze car is designed to karry 5 persons." "You canta pulla thata one on me-aa!" replies the Italian customs officer. "Quattro meansa four. You have five-a people ina your car and thereforea youarra breaking da law." The German driver replies angrily, "Idiot! I vant your supervisor over. I vant to speak to someone viz more intelligence!" "I’ma sorry" responds the Italian officer, "He can'ta come. He's a busy with a 2 guys in a Fiat Uno."

Run Reports Run organisers are requested to nominate someone on the run to provide an article for the Journal, and also someone to report on the run to meetings (preferably a separate person for each). A report sheet is available to assist in reporting and is on the web site at http://gawlercarclub.com/pdfs/run_report_template.pdf . Reports should include some statistics on number of cars and people on the run plus information of a general nature. Photos of the run are earnestly sought by the Editor and the Webmaster. Old Car Day By Allan Kempster (this report was received too late for the October Journal, but the historical aspects are worth noting) As usual the run was broken into three starting from various locations. Some members stopped off at the Lyndoch Bakery for morning tea. Cynthia and myself owned and operated a workshop and VW dealership from these premises in the late 60,s early 70,s it was a dealership and workshop from the 30’s selling Dodge cars and farming equipment and had a house alongside which was demolished some time after we sold the business. Getting back to old car day it was great to see so many cars from various clubs and to catch up with old friends, some we had not seen since the previous years old car day. The picnic atmosphere really helps to make the day and we had a great day, as one person remarked we all used to talk of vehicles we had recently purchased or of ones we had finally got on the road where as now the conversations seemed to be of new aches and pains and the lack of progress in the shed. All in all a very enjoyable day, and we are looking forward to next year Barbara's experience of the Motorfest Event on Wednesday 23 September 2015 As usual, Trevor Unsworth did a wonderful job of organising this special event, eventually closing off entries at 130 people. They came from all parts of Australia and I am sure they really enjoyed the special day they shared plus the places they visited for such a modest fee. The weather was cool but a typical spring day which added to the pleasure I was in charge of providing morning tea at Colin Jones' Military Museum at Womma Rd Penfield. Colin was at home after taking his Children to school, when Ron and I arrived at 9am.We set up the large hall area with tables and chairs and his urn was already full of water and boiling Anne and Bruce Williams, Pam and David Moule and Cathy and Trevor Waterhouse all arrived on time to help. Anne, Pam and Cathy helped with the plates, whipping cream, setting up coffee, tea etc. while Bruce and David were on duty as Marshalls.

Ron was doorman and took the morning tea tickets at the The Marshalls at Womma Rd door. Cathy and Trevor had risen early to bake the 250 scones and transported them, wrapped in thermal blankets and towels so they could be served warm and fresh on request — a great feat really appreciated by all I am sure. A steady stream of people kept Pam and Anne busy with the scones while I kept up the supply of plates with jam and cream and other plates with cakes. Cathy and her friend Sue, washed up and kept an eye on the coffee area. When Trevor Unsworth blew his whistle to show it was time for the visitors to move on to Corrie Wake's collection in Willaston, it was our chance to pack up and clear the area with good help from Diane Bergamin. What a great team of helpers I had — thank you all once again. Ann, Bruce, Ron and I went to the BBQ at the Whispering Wall while the group was at Corrie's. When we arrived, there was a hive of activity — and a great BBQ smell of cooked meat. There seemed to be people everywhere very busy with various jobs. The new BBQ trailer is amazingly well designed and had a good workout. There were a few things noted that will be done to make it even more efficient for the next event. I had no chance to see who the chefs were but they did a tremendous job and must have been exhausted after the rush was over. Well done everyone involved! When we arrived Lyn Bellchambers and Lorraine Bywaters were busy buttering bread and setting up the serving area. The urn with tea/coffee was set up on a table nearby The group on the Run soon arrived and were happily tucking into their lunch. Anne and I helped Lyn and Lorraine with the serving and each person had the choice of a pattie and two, sausages plus a spoonful of three salads, bread and butter — a good sized meal! It was a very busy time for the cooks and servers but the

GVVCVC Journal December 2015 Page 11 guests were happy and contented and it was good to hear such positive remarks on what a great time they were having. They sat on their own chairs on the grass or anything else available and enjoyed the sunshine. Another blow of Trevor's whistle had the entrants moving off to go to Carl Lindner’s at Tanunda. Some of the volunteers took a minute to enjoy one of the leftover scones from the morning tea before cleaning up the BBQ and other areas. I am sure everyone who was involved in any part of this special day, must have gone home quite tired but happy to know what a great job they did to ensure that 130 people had a great day out and possibly made some new friends. Again, well done Trevor! Sparrow Run Sunday October 4 th by Brewan This run was attended by 37 brekky lovers. This was a great number considering that daylight savings only kicked in that morning and most would still be in bed normally. After leaving TAFE carpark we went south and drove up Calton Rd continuing until we reached the Sandy Creek /Williamstown Road . We then turned left and on to Sandy Creek. From there a short run back to Gawler and the Willaston Hotel for a great Breakfast. . We had a good social get together and thanks to Trevor Bellchambers for organising this run. Run to Virgara Winery Sunday 18 th October by Brewan We all had a great day out and the weather was perfect for this run By Geoff and Jean Boundy. 62 people were present for this outing and the first Sunday outing for our new Club BBQ. Lorraine and husband Steve were cooking with a lot of help from Steve and Tim Harvey. The homemade Hamburgers and sausage with onion in Bread were the best and at a really reasonable price. Thanks go to Trevor Norris and Wolfgang Ritter for their work on the BBQ and for towing it to this event. Geoff Boundy ran a very interesting quiz and the winners were given bottles of wine donated by the Virgara Winery. We thank this Winery for their generosity and use of their beautiful grounds and we thank the Boundys for organising this run , and thanks to all those coming along to this outing

Nyroca Station and the Waterhouses Wednesday 21st October On this run we called in to Nyroca station on way to the property of Trevor and Cathy Waterhouse in the ranges near Kersbrook. At Nyroca we had a short walking tour about this property and the owner Steve Salisbury from our club gave us a good rundown of the history and workings of this station. A great Devonshire morning tea was provided there by some of the station staff and home made scones jam and cream were tops.

After a good look around we travelled on through very scenic and bushfire burnt countryside to the mountainous hills Waterhouse property. A good look around and a lot of socialising took place with a BYO lunch and perhaps a visit to the long drop. We were lucky with the weather and enjoyed our outing

Visit to Ayers House . Sunday Nov 15 th David and Pam Moule, and Trevor Bellchambers Firstly some background:- Some of you may have followed the “Miss Fisher Murder Mysteries” on T.V. where Essie Davis who plays the role of Miss Fisher drives a very sporty 4 door red 1923 H6CV Hispano-Suiza and solves murders along with Inspector Jack Robinson, played by Nathan Page. By now you will realise I have never watched the series, however millions have and there is a cult following. The series is centred around the 1920’s where ladies costumes and accessories were elegant and they drove fine looking motor vehicles. To satisfy its many fans a travelling display of many hundreds of costumes worn by Miss Fisher and other cast members ended in Melbourne and Ayers House in Adelaide was chosen for its next venue for display. Our well known publicity officer Trevor Bellchambers was contacted to see if our club would be able to arrange for 6 or 7 1920’s vehicles to be available for display to support the theme which he did. Sunday was the grand opening day. The ABC radio station ran a competition with questions asked of the series. 100 winners were then invited to attend an afternoon preview with TV coverage. However due to the horrific events in France the TV coverage did not happen, but the show went on. Seven of our historic club cars were parked on the lawn fronting the entrance to Ayers House and were a centre of attraction. Our ladies (and gentlemen) were dressed to the hilt in their ‘20’s costumes and were a smash hit with many photos taken by guests and passers by. We were given a preview of the displays before the Official Opening and it is spectacular. The male leading actor of the Series, Nathan Page who plays the role of Detective Inspector Jack Robinson attended and made himself freely available for photos and a chat. In the Series he drives as Graham Paige that is owned in Victoria by a friend of President Fred Chapman. A wedding party in the adjoining restaurant also took advantage of the cars and many posed for photos in front of our cars. The National Trust attendees were also rightly excited to have the cars as props harmonising with the grand old building of Ayers House and I wouldn’t be surprised if they called on us again! It was a long day but we all had fun and enjoyed the outing and the opportunity to dress up. The ladies especially enjoyed the tour of the building and the display of costumes worn by Miss Fisher. Attendees were:-Trevor and Lynne Bellchambers, Fred Chapman, 1929 Graham Page, Graham & Dorothy Butler 1928 Rio, Kevin & Eileen Draper1928 Model A Ford, David Prest 1926 Whippet, Brian Roberts & Don Gaskin 1924 Dodge, John & Pam Warner 1928 Oldsmobile, Pam & David Moule 1926 Oldsmobile

SPRINGTON RUN Wednesday18 th November 2015 Gavin Launer

The forecast was hot – 39 degrees with strong northerly winds. This did not deter the 40 members who met at TAFE for the monthly Run. Host Gavin Launer gave details and issued direction maps and we set off on time – some older cars however, a few took advantage of modern air- conditioned comfort. No worries for David Prest in his 1926 Whippet – all weather, open air conditioning. A lovely tree-lined drive along the Springton Road saw Gavin standing at the gate entrance – well, after awhile he was stamping and jumping – a bull-ant nest!! Cars arrived in an orderly fashion – Tony Hayton complaining he couldn’t keep up with the Whippet – “he was doing 90 kph – downhill”. We had to wait for tail-end Bruce Williams – someone said he stopped for morning tea at Cockatoo Valley, Lyndoch and again at Williamstown. Not so – he had to help John Petty with car problems. We all took our chairs and coffee and sat among the trees overlooking the railway tracks, the trains, miniature buildings, people, animals, water tanks, bridges and more. Gavin introduced Graham Haggie, his wife and Julian his ‘co-driver’ who gave us some history of the trains and the set up. Then it was time to set off on the train ride, complete with all the exact sounds of 1880s train noise. We watched trains coming and going, many taking photos and videos in many interesting locations. The morning was quite pleasant weather-wise – overcast, shady with a strong breeze. However, as time went on the wind grew stronger, so that a ‘crash’ occurred. At this point Graham took us to show us his two 1928 Dodge buckboards and two others in various stages of restoration. A fully restored buggy was also on display. We left Graham – still talking! – a lovely talented chap, thanked him and then headed to the Totness Inn Hotel at Mt Pleasant for lunch – and, what a lunch – big plates of big schnitzels and fish. The service was good and members just stayed and enjoyed good food and good company. All in all, it turned out to be a really good day.

Classic Jet Fighter Run 29/11/15

25 club members attended the run to The Classic Jet Fighter Museum at Parafield. Numbers were down and we think that this may have been due to the recent Pinery fires which caused a lot of damage in areas populated by some of our group and we wish them all well. We started by inspecting the workshop shed where we saw many planes under reconstruction and some areas of this work were very complicated and many skills are required to rebuild the planes. We then proceeded to a second shed where more restored planes were displayed and we were to be deafened by the engine exhaust noise from a 12 cylinder Allison aero engine. We then drove down to The Elizabeth Grand Central Footy Club Restaurant and all enjoyed a lunch consisting of Soup, Main course and Desert for a very reasonable price. Thanks to Fred Chapman for arranging this outing during a very difficult time for him with the fires causing some damage to his Fischer property.

TECH TORQUE Fixing Wobbly Wheels by GVVCVC Member Merv Lewis (Ph 0407 448 399) Many vintage car owners who have 1920/1930 cars with large diameter narrow wheels have problems with their steering getting a mind of its own. I have on occasion had this problem and recently was travelling downhill on a narrow road with a stream of traffic coming towards me when my off side front wheel hit a pot hole. The front wheels got a wobble up and I was compromised as I didn’t have the space to turn the wheel to stabilise the situation. Apart from the discomfort of the situation I felt safety was compromised. The steering and kingpins on my 1929 Chrysler are in pretty good shape. I felt I needed to do something. I know I had had the same sort of problem when the steering damper was stuffed on the 4WD’s on the farm so I thought a steering damper will do the trick. So for your consideration I will outline what I did, step by step. Making a steering damper attachment for vintage cars. 1. Ensure you have room between the steering tie rod and the axle. 2. Ensure you have a mounting point i.e. enough thread on the spring U bolts to fit a mounting plate. 3. Measure the travel lock to lock of the tie rod. 4. Purchase a steering damper that exceeds the tie rod travel ( I used a 1403 / 043645623296 damper which fits a Toyota Landcruiser purchased from Autopro for about $40.) 5. Make templates for the brackets both end as per Fig 1 ensure you have enough space to mount the damper ends. The spring end bracket will need to be shaped to fit around the forged shape of the axle. Fig 1

6. Cut the shapes from 4mm plate leaving the fingers long on the tie rod bracket to facilitate bending and drilling 7. Drill the holes for the U bolts ensuring accuracy , then drill ½ inch holes for the damper ends. 8. Bend the fingers on the tie rod brackets using heat to fit around the tie rod. 9. Mark and drill the tie rod clamping fingers then trim off the excess. 10. When fitted it is IMPORTANT that the damper tilts down from top to bottom to ensure the cover sleeve is self draining and the air in the damper stays at the top end. 11. If using the same damper fit a ½ inch sleeve into the damper end that doesn’t have one, make it slightly short so that when the bolt is tightened it compresses the rubber. 12. Place bolts (12mm x 70mm) into the brackets ensuring you have them the right way and weld the heads in place. As in Fig 2 Fig 2

13. Fit the spring end bracket using the U bolt nuts. 14. Fit the tie rod bracket to the tie rod loosely. 15. Open and close the damper holding it upright to ensure the air is in the top section. Mark the damper to show the half way extended point. Leave the damper at half way. 16. Place the damper near the brackets with the wheels straight forward (centred) and tighten the clamp bolts on the tie rod bracket. 17. Using a straight edge bend the bracket ends so they are aligned using a large shifting spanner. GVVCVC Journal December 2015 Page 17

18. Fit the damper with a washer and nylok nut each end. 19. Test the steering while jacked up from lock to lock to ensure nothing fowls. Steering will be somewhat stiffer than before. 20. Paint the job with spray can to make it look tidy.

This system has been fitted to my 1929 Chrysler 65 and a 1929 Graham Paige. Fitting the steering damper attachment has improved the driver experience and made safer driving possible.

Battery Drill Warning By Bob Kay About 10 years ago I bought a battery drill that I used frequently for many jobs around the house and in the shed. Recently that drill reached the end of its life so in April I went to Bunnings to purchase a new drill. After looking at what was on offer, ranging from very cheap to somewhat expensive I decided to purchase an AEG priced at $249. This was near the top of the range and the cardboard sleeve around the sealed box boasted that it had a 6 year guarantee. Throughout the winter it was not used as it was so cold and wet and I did not work around the house and spent very little time in the shed. As the weather improved I got back into several projects and last week while using the drill the chuck jammed in the open position. After many attempts to get it to free up I returned it to Bunnings only to be told that as the drill was 6 months old, the chuck was not covered as that only had a 3 month guarantee. When I asked about the 6 year guarantee I was told that did not include the chuck, the 6 year coverage was only essential parts of the drill! When I asked them to show me, in writing where it said that the chuck was only covered for 3 months the Bunnings staff person went through the hand book supplied with the drill, and after 10 minutes of searching found the statement in very small print. As this information was inside the sealed drill box there was no way that I would have known this at purchase time. So the moral of this story is the next time you want to buy a battery drill, check that the guarantee covers all of the drill including the chuck for the period of time stated on the box, not just selected bits. (Editors comment: I suggested to Bob that this should have been referred to Consumer affairs)

Changes in Registration fees and processes The article opposite appeared in The Bunyip on 18 th November 2015. It appears that there may have been a change in the way permits are obtained. Permits cost $44 for a one day vehicle inspection permit, and $59 for a 3 day permit relocation/repair permit (including rally participation). Those who have renewed their Historic Vehicle Registration recently will have noticed that the fees have reduced considerably after 1 July 2015. The SA Gov site has not been updated, but I can tell you that a 3 year renewal in Nov 2013 cost $367.00 and in Nov 2015 cost $193.00

The Jensen Interceptor Terry Meads

Alan and Richard Jensen had previously been employed in the bodyshop of Patrick Motors, in Birmingham. They then seem to have operated a small coachbuilding business as a subsidiary to their employer W. J. Smith & Son Ltd in 1931. On the owners death they bought the business and renamed it Ltd in 1934.

Did you know that the two Series 1 Jensen Interceptors (shown in the bottom picture) owned by club members, were not the first Interceptors? The top left pic shows the first so named!!!

The first Interceptor’s 1950 -57. Only 88 were built . (32 convertibles, 52 saloons and 4 sedancas), were styled by Eric Neale, an ex Wolseley stylist who had joined Jensen in 1949.

As Jensen had associations with a number of British car makers, the car was based on a lengthened Austin A70 chassis with modified coil spring suspension, using the 6 cylinder motor (3993cc) from the Austin Sheerline, also used in Austin trucks. Transmission was 4 speed manual with overdrive added in 1952. Tested by “The Motor” magazine in 1952, a convertible gained 95 mph (153km/h), 0-60 mph (97km/h) in 17.8 seconds. Fuel consumption was 20.3 mpg. In that year the car cost £2645 (including tax) in Britain. Overdrive was extra at £116.

Austin A40 Sports, over 4000 built. 1950-53 ( Top right pic). Austin’s chairman , was so impressed that he asked Jensen’s and Eric Neale to develop a scaled down 2 door body to suit the A40 chassis and mechanicals in production at the time. The A40 Sports bodies, made of aluminium, were built by Jensen then transported to the Austin factory at Longbridge where assembly was completed. Answer to the puzzle on Page 9 The most popular series 1’s purchased were 923 RHD models.

It has been quoted that the later production of a model is preferred by collectors, but I have had a few enquires wanting to purchase my series 1! In lists in OZ it seems the later models are valued higher, but another list, probably from the UK, shows the opposite! Originally the Jensen Interceptor of 1971 was priced at £5,900, Aston Martin £5,700 and the “E Type” Jaguar only £1,800!!! These figures come from Robin Loder, a classic car expert, in an article in 1998. These days (In OZ) an “E Type” is valued much higher than a Jensen Interceptor. But of course it’s the old story of how badly you want something and what you are willing to pay!!!

Check out the “Top Gear” episode on the internet………under the general wording “Jensen Interceptor”.

2007 Proton Jumbuck ute Have you ever wondered what you would get if you crossed a go-cart with a wheelbarrow? The answer is a Jumbuck ute! 1500cc Mitsubishi motor gives more than enough power to move you while the urethane spray lined tub can take any punishment you can dish out. A tonneau cover keeps everything out of sight and the interior is comfortable and well laid out, protected by an alarm. Tinted windows stop the glare. Alloy wheels finish the great look (a bit like a VS ute that has shrunk!) Tyres are Bridgestone Supercats and they have a lot of km's left in them. This vehicle is excess to requirements and it is a waste for such a great vehicle to sit in the shed. Note - The personalised plates are not included, but the ute will be sold with standard SA reg plates. A regretful sale but priced to go at $5400.00 Kym 0419 815 676 1512
