Kamruzzaman1,2*, Shamim Ahmed2 and Akira Osawa1 Abstract Background: The article presents the first estimates of biomass and productivity for mangrove forests along the Oligohaline zone of the Sundarbans Reserve Forest (SRF), Bangladesh. This study was conducted overone year from March 2016 to April 2017. Stand structure, above and below-ground biomass changes, and litterfall production were measured within a 2100 m2 sample plot. Methods: All trees in the study plots were numbered and height (H) and diameter at breast height (DBH) were measured. Tree height (H) and DBH for each tree were measured in March 2016 and 2017. We apply the above and belowground biomass equation for estimating the biomass of the mangrove tree species (Chave et al. Oecologia 145:87−99, 2005; Komiyama et al. J Trop Ecol 21:471–477, 2005). Litterfall was collected using 1-mm mesh litter traps with collection area of 0.42 m2. Net Primary Production (NPP) was estimated by the summation method of Ogawa Primary productivity of Japanese forests: productivity of terrestrial communities, JIBP synthesis (1977) and Matsuura and Kajimoto Carbon dynamics of terrestrial ecosystem: Systems approach to global environment (2013). Results: Heritiera fomes has maintained its dominance of the stand and also suffered the highest tree mortality (2.4%) in the suppressed crown class. The total above-ground biomass (AGB) and below-ground biomass (BGB) of the studied stand was 154.8 and 84.2 Mg∙ha−1, respectively. -

Over the years, areas affected by salinity have increased dramatically in Thailand, resulting in an urgent need for reclamation of salt-affected areas using salinity tolerant plant species. In this context, seed germination is an important process in plant reproduction and dispersion. This research aimed to study the ability of 16 fabaceous species to germinate and tolerate salt concentrations of at 6 different levels (concentration of sodium chloride solution, i.e., 0, 8, 16, 24, 32, and 40 dS m-1). The germination test was conducted daily for 30 days, and parameters such as germination percentage, germination speed, and germination synchrony were calculated. The electrical conductivity (EC50) was used to compare the salt-tolerant ability among the 16 species. -

In many respects, this assessment may well be justified since A. cucullata does not feature strongly in the mangrove literature. This paper seeks to help enhance the current Red List status of A. cucullata by reviewing its botany, uses, ecology and physiology. A description of a natural population of A. cucullata in the Ranong mangrove forest, which is the first record for Thailand, is provided. Past research studies of the species in Thailand are mentioned and research opportunities are discussed. Botany and uses The genus Aglaia (previously known as Amoora) comprises 25–30 species, many are economically important timber trees (Xu et al., 2019). Described in the Mangrove Guidebook for Southeast Asia by Giesen et al. (2007), Aglaia cucullata (Roxb.) Pellegr. (Figure 1) belongs to the family Meliaceae. The species occurs in lowland forest and along tidal riverbanks. A mangrove associate, A. cucullata is a small to medium-sized tree with plank buttresses and pneumatophores. The bark is smooth, brown or pale orange, and somewhat scaly. -

In the past few decades, however, these mangrove forests have been largely degraded and destroyed during the process of development. The negative environmental and socio-economic impacts on mangrove ecosystems have led many government and non- government agencies, together with civil societies, to launch mangrove conservation and rehabilitation programmes, especially during the 1990s. In the course of such activities, programme staff have faced continual difficulties in identifying plant species growing in the field. Despite a wide availability of mangrove guidebooks in Southeast Asia, none of these sufficiently cover species that, though often associated with mangroves, are not confined to this habitat. -
Some of the Plants in Addu
PREFACE. The main purpose of the present book is to enhance the botanical knowledge on the indigenous flora of the Addu atoll to increase the younger generation’s interest in this subject and, especially, to contribute to the schoolchildren’s consciousness of the vegetable kingdom they live in. As indicated by the title of the book “The Plants in Addu” , my work is dedicated to the specific flora of the southernmost atoll of the Maldives. To give more comprehensive information to botanist as well as interested people of both Maldives and foreigners, I have mentioned the names for each plant in English, Latin and Dhivehi. There are plants which have a low rank in the awareness of people only because their names are unknown or forgotten. In such cases I would like to say that a plant without a name of its own has no more “identity”. Who might dare using such a plant? I have tried to demonstrate that, in many cases, botanic terminology by itself can give a primary imagination of the “basic character” of specific plants and so inspire and develop our ability and skills in using and conserving their inherent qualities and, furthermore, the general understanding of our plants as genetic resources. Reading this book you will also find some hints to the medical use of various plants, according to the tradition of our forefathers. By explaining the medical function I intend to sharpen the general awareness on the role of flora in olden days and to give a picture of how our ancestors lived, benefiting from all plants growing around them. -

Cortiguerra Foreword Bonsai is a dwarfed tree growing in a tray or a pot. “Bon” means tray or pot in Japanese; “sai” means to plant; therefore bonsai means literally planted in a tray. It is an art of dwarfing trees or plants and developing them into an aesthetically appearing shape by growing pruning and training them in a container according to a precribed technique. Bonsai are not special plants but rather ordinary plants grown in a special way. A bonsai “tree” can be made of almost any woody plant material, including trees, shrubs or vines. Species with small leaves and are tolerant to heavy pruning are considered desirable as bonsai material. Bonsai-making is an interesting hobby or even a profession. For plant propagators/gardeners it may be an additional source of income aside from the personal satisfaction they experience. Mangrove diversity of the atolls of the Maldives is impressive when the other atolls of the Indian Ocean are considered, as they support 15 mangrove plant species among the 17 species reported from the Indian Ocean atoll islands. Thus, the atolls of the Maldives are richer in the diversity of mangroves compared to other atolls of the Indian Ocean.
